A Subaqueous Future
A hundred years into the future, humanity and the world will
experience dramatic changes. As climate change begins to alter
our global environments, humanity must adapt to the changes
it brings. The overall increase in global temperatures is melting
the polar ice caps and glaciers causing our sea levels to rise
dramatically putting over 44% of the world population at risk of
being submerged under the sea.
As dry land becomes more scarce and human populations of the
world continue to increase, a new solution is needed to begin to
utilize the 71% portion of the Earth?s surface; the oceans.
This thesis explores potential solutions to large population
density structure and urban societies on the seas. A replicable
and practical project that meets humanities needs while
providing the necessary character and biology of a city will be
needed in the future.
The project will explore the various issues with oceanic structures
and subaqueous life in the new cities of the future
Writing Fires: Writing Instruction, Student Learning Perceptions, and the Importance of Connection in the Age of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it devastating and potentially long-lasting impacts to the world. From economic upheavals, political ramifications, and educational disruptions, COVID-19 has changed the face of many aspects of life, perhaps forever. The issue in this study is to ask how COVID-19 may have impacted the literacy development of undergraduate students through the use of emergency remote instruction. To begin investigating the issue, roughly 200 undergraduate students in writing-focused classes (first-year composition and upper-division writing courses) were surveyed to understand how they learned the rhetorical conventions and genre expectations of their discipline. Out of the 200 responses, 36 total were received. Through a mixed methods analysis of data collected through a survey, the goal was to uncover student perceptions of their literacy development by examining their thoughts on their development of their own rhetorical awareness and writing capacity

Cold Hardiness and Survival of Interspecific Vitis Hybrids
Cold hardiness and survival of wine grapes in two locations in North Dakota was determined using differential thermal analysis for five cultivars in 2020 and six cultivars from 2020-2021. Phenological data was collected during the growing season of 2020. Phenological data showed that cultivars broke bud early in the season and matured before the first fall frost. In 2020, cultivars at Red Trail Vineyard were hardier than those at the North Dakota State University Horticulture Research Station and ?King of the North? exhibited greatest hardiness, while ?Frontenac? and ?Frontenac gris? exhibited lowest hardiness. Across both locations, ?King of the North? proved to be the most cold hardy cultivar. Unpredictable minimum temperatures during dormancy, subsequent winter injury and herbicide drift all influenced bud cold hardiness, vine recovery, and survival. These results suggest that when growing wine grapes in North Dakota, cultivar selection and vineyard placement are critical factors in sustainable production
Noise Reduction of Tunable Resistive Pulse Sensing for Improved Extracellular Vesicles Profiling in Cancer Detection
EVs have much potential as sensitive, novel biomarkers because they represent the status of their cells of origin and can be used to detect cancer earlier than alternative biomarkers. The size of EVs can be determined by tunable resistive pulse sensing (TRPS). However, TRPS is susceptible to environmental noise, including mechanical and electrical noise that limits detection precision. To overcome these noises, an external device was designed, guided by flow simulations, to reduce noises that interfere with TRPS measurements. Both mechanical and electrical environmental noise reductions were observed after using the shield. The study also validated the noise reduction function of the shield by quantifying EVs from different cell origins. This study demonstrates innovation in designing shielding enclosures using composite material to improve the sensitivity of emerging tunable resistive pulse technology to quantify EVs below 200 nm, which is challenging using traditional quantification methods

Perspectives on Securing the Multimodal Transportation System
Raj Bridgelall is the program director for the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) Center for Surface Mobility Applications & Real-time Simulation environments (SMARTSeSM).The vast, open, and interconnected characteristics of the transportation system make it a prime target for terrorists and hackers. However, there are no standard measures of transport system vulnerability to physical or cyberattacks. The separation of governance over different modes of transport increases the difficulty of coordination in developing and enforcing a common security index. This paper contributes a perspective and roadmap toward developing multimodal security indices that can leverage a variety of existing and emerging connected vehicle, sensing, and computing technologies. Pupfishes as a System to Test the Predator Naivet? Hypothesis
Pupfishes are an ideal system to test this the predator naivet? hypothesis because they often occur in isolated springs across a gradient of predation pressure. A convenient tool for assaying antipredator competence are behavioral responses to chemical alarm cues released when the epidermis is damaged during a predation event. Behavioral responses of three pupfish species, Red River Pupfish (Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis), Amargosa River Pupfish (C. nevadensis amargosae), and Shoshone Pupfish (C. n. shoshone), which occur across a gradient of community complexity and predation pressure, were evaluated to test the effect of community composition, including predator variety and density, on antipredator behaviors. All three species responded to alarm cues by either reducing activity and/or lowering position in the water column, regardless of respective isolation or predation risks. I found no support for the predator naivet? hypothesis in these populations, which suggests that pupfish can be managed in multi-species habitats

Anthrozoology Center: Healing Through Animal-Assisted Therapy
Anthrozoology is defined as the interdisciplinary study of the interaction between humans and other animals.
This thesis involves animal-human relationships and the ways that animals can improve the mental, physical,
and the spiritual health of people. I will be specifically researching the positive effects of the connections
equines and canines have on humans and implementing designs that respond to that. Equine-assisted
therapy has been a method for helping individuals with disabilities and trauma for centuries. To respond to
the need for this type of therapy, I will design a facility that gives space for the occupants to bond and interact
with the horses as well as encourage joy and wellbeing. Answering questions like ?How can hippotherapy
(horse-assisted therapy) and architectural design assimilate in a way that is inviting to a broad spectrum of
people?? ?How can we use architecture and nature to encourage the wellbeing of equines as well as people??
Using innovation, I am looking to blend the separation between the animal, and human spaces in a way that
is inviting, aesthetic, and comfortable. A strong emphasis on framing the ambient outdoor space will be
incorporated into the overall design. Connecting to nature is complimentary to connection with animals,
and naturally helps us heal. Along with equine therapy, I will be including canine assisted international space
within the program
