Sustainably Symbiotic: A Study Using Lichen Biomimicry to Design a Sustainable Multi-Use Campground in Cavalier County, ND
Evaluating if designing a multi-use campground using biomorphic design relating to LICHEN could benefit the overall camping experience. The Pembina Gorge near Walhalla, North Dakota was determined as the design setting. The analysis exploration hopes to provide proficient lichen inspired campground layouts and design methods by utilizing characteristics of native lichens and the geographical and geological areas lichen thrive on. Using ArcGIS layers created from research, I will design a sustainable and educational lichen-style campground that informs users with wayfinding signage that are directional, regulatory, identification based and informational. Interpretative signs will connect users with historical and educational photos of native lichen and vital habitats, how lichens can teach us to detect air pollution before reaching dangerous levels, and how we can use native lichen design principles to design sustainably. On the ground site investigating and photo analysis of lichen species and ecosystems will possibly verify online research creating a symbiosis of mutual data. Interactive lichen displays configured to design principles of the five senses: vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch could offer top experiences if applied correctly. Extended research using similar campground case studies will help build a design narrative capable of sustainability through camping experience and land management. Final design model will be concluded once all needed information regarding the project is collected and studied. Although findings would vary depending on location and lichen species, this methodology could be applied to any location wanting to explore sustainable campground development

Taking Persephone: The Rhetoric of Consent in Rachel Smythe's Webtoon Lore Olympus (2018)
Lore Olympus is a webtoon that reimagines the taking of Persephone in an animated, comic style. In this paper, I discuss the rhetoric of consent through a visual analysis using the intersecting fields of classical reception, feminist rhetoric, and digital humanities. I use two versions of the taking of Persephone for my analysis: Ovid?s Metamorphoses and ?The Homeric Hymn to Demeter.? My analysis is split into two parts, with the first being a visual analysis of 4 panels of the webtoon, focusing on how each depicts the rhetoric of consent. The second part of my analysis is focused on the rhetorical devices within the text that serves as visual metaphors to symbolize layered meaning to readers. My findings suggest that Lore Olympus does not allow its female characters agency in removing the aspect of consent using concepts such as voyeurism and class systems to strip female characters of their agency
Design Study of Catholic Church Architectural Form and Material Costs
The architecture of Catholic churches has an intrinsic connection with the liturgy,
theology, and tradition of the Church. Creating sacred spaces to engage in the worship
of God has been an essential part of Catholic life since the earliest days of Christendom,
but sacred architecture has undergone many notable shifts over the last century. These
design changes in modern sacred architecture have partly stemmed from liturgical reform
within the Church, but also from societal turmoil from without. This has resulted in many
churches built over the last 70 years that fail to live up to their potential, through a lack of
architectural beauty, shoddy construction, and tawdry materials. The era of the beautiful
Catholic church building had stopped.
The questions this research seeks to address are as follows: How can the beauty of
a contemporary church building signify the unchanging solemnity of Catholic worship and
aid in the search for the Divine, and how can this beauty be returned to new churches
in an economical way through modern construction methods? How can these ideals be
applied to design a transcendent sacred space for a small parish with limited resources?
This research project examined designs for a new Catholic church building through
the lens of each of the following four categories: form, liturgy, structure, and cost.
The goal of this research was to find the optimal combination of the above categories
for a new church construction project, in order to create a sacred space appropriate for
the Catholic liturgy in a cost-effective manner. Variations in form were explored in multiple
ways, with the vesica piscis shape serving as the proportioning system for the floorplan
shapes and changes in verticality throughout building elements. The progression of
possible forms were digitally modeled and the material costs for each were estimated,
with the focus being on how each iteration affects the estimated construction costs. The
desired outcome will be a joint architectural form and structural method that provides a
sanctuary that expresses the four transcendentals of Catholic theology: truth, goodness,
beauty, and unity, and does so in an easily constructible way that is financially accessible
for small parish communities
Phytoremediation: Plant vs Filter: A Nature-Based Solution Against Poor Air Quality
With an increasing number of wildfire events occurring year after year in California, one of the challenges many cities face today is the exposure to smoke produced by fires that spread faster and burn more intensely. This heavy smoke comprises gaseous pollutants, water vapor, and particle pollution, or particulate matter (PM). Particles generally 2.5 ?m in diameter or smaller represent the primary pollutant in wildfire smoke and the leading health threat.
The most common advice during a wildfire smoke event is to remain indoors. For this to be effective, buildings should have a tightly closed, air-conditioned space in which the air conditioner recirculates indoor air. According to the 2021 American housing survey released by the U.S. Census, San Francisco has become the least air-conditioned metro area in the U.S. The survey states that about 45% of the 1.8 million housing units have a primary air conditioning source, compared to a national average of 92%. Of those 45%, only about 34% of homes are equipped with central air, while 11% use room air conditioning.
This research aims to provide an alternative nature-based solution to today's conventional HVAC systems. This research will integrate the benefits of phytoremediation, a plant's ability to remediate soil, water, and air, with a building HVAC system to combat poor air quality in the urban environment

A Mobile Game for Learning Cyber-Attacks and Their Prevention
This paper's primary goal is to use Bloom's Revised Taxonomy educational objectives in creating Cyber Air-Attack. It's a game that teaches fundamental concepts about cybersecurity. Because it simplifies and makes learning simple, the course material was designed with Bloom's Revised Taxonomy. This taxonomy divides the course material into increasing levels of complexity, with the basics being the most basic and the advanced being the most complex. We reviewed all literature to understand the area of research and identify any gaps in previous research.
Cyber Air-Attack targets amateur computer users. They will be taught about cybersecurity basics, cyber threats, and countermeasures. This paper will teach you how to identify and prevent cyberattacks

How Can Declining Rural Communities in North Dakota Be Saved?
Rural North Dakota has become somewhat of an abandoned
land. There are dozens of small communities, with major
service gaps and unsustainable populations. With the death of
each rural town, the state loses pieces of its history, as unique cultures,
and buildings decay alongside the highways. Witnessing these townships
fall into despair, going unused with years of embodied energy wasted, has
partly inspired this investigation. Why didn't these towns survive? Are all of
North Dakota's small rural communities destined to meet the same fate?
Exploring the possibility of reviving historically declining rural towns
would not only breathe new life into the state, but also respond to modern
challenges. This research aims to identify a program for successful rural revitalization in North Dakota. Socioeconomic policies and facility updates and additions will inform best practices for the prosperity
of rural towns looking to attract residents, businesses, and opportunities
Predicting Advanced Air Mobility Adoption by Machine Learning
Raj Bridgelall is the program director for the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) Center for Surface Mobility Applications & Real-time Simulation environments (SMARTSeSM).Advanced air mobility (AAM) is a sustainable aviation initiative to deliver cargo and passengers in urban and regional locations by electrified drones. The widespread expectation is that AAM adoption worldwide will help to reduce pollution, reduce transport costs, increase accessibility, and enable a more reliable and resilient supply chain. However, most countries lack regulations that legalize AAM. A fragmented regulatory approach hampers the progress of business prospectors and international organizations concerned with human welfare. Therefore, amidst high uncertainty, knowledge of indicators that can predict the propensity for AAM adoption will help nations and organizations plan for drone use. This research finds predictive indicators by assembling a unique dataset of 36 economic, social, environmental, governance, land use, technology, and transportation indicators for 204 nations. Subsequently, the best of 12 different machine learning models ranks the predictive importance of the indicators. The gross domestic product (GDP) and the regulatory quality index (RQI) developed by the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) project were the two top predictors. Just as importantly, the poor predictors were as follows: the social progress index developed by the Social Progress Imperative, the WGI rule-of-law index, land use characteristics such as rural and urban proportions, borders on open waterways, population density, technology accessibility such as electricity and cell phones, carbon dioxide emission level, aviation traffic, port traffic, tourist arrivals, and roadway fatalities.The U.S. Department of Transportation supported this work, grant number [Mountain Plains Consortium].https://www.ugpti.org/about/staff/viewbio.php?id=7
