This study is conducted to discover the learning strategies used by more successful and less successful language learners at a tourism college in Bali. This mix-method research combined quantitative data from the questionnaire with qualitative narration obtained from a semi-structured interview. Thirty students were asked to fill in the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (Oxford 1990). The next step was the interview, whose questions were based on their SILL results; it scrutinized the explanation of the low or high rate that they had given. The result showed that metacognitive strategies were the most prevalent among students in both groups. On the other side, the least used strategies for more successful learners were those of memory, whereas the less successful ones most rarely used compensation strategies. The interview revealed that the more successful participants improve their English by watching movies or reading books. The other strategies were taking notes and using new words in conversation, as well as making guesses on new words, and writing in a diary.  Language learners could refer to those strategies to accelerate their learning progress. Teachers should also be aware of the diverse strategies and inform the students about the other alternative strategies that might suit their weaknesses, strengths, or learning style. It is also very helpful to provide an environment where students could explore different strategies, either by making access to native speakers available or by assigning diary writing and portfolio

Ninety-one English Education Study Program undergraduate students in FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, participated in this research. This descriptive research used forty items in a questionnaire as the instrument modified from Dwihandini, Marhaeni, and Suarnajaya’s (2013) model. The model utilized three factors causing students’ problems in writing a research proposal, namely (1) psychological factors, (2) socio-cultural factors, and (3) linguistic factors. To report the findings of the results, the researcher used the descriptive statistics technique to display each factor's percentage score. The findings indicated that the score of linguistic factors got the highest (75,49%), which highly affected students' writing in research proposals. The conclusion is each factor causes problems, so it affects students in writing a research proposal, and linguistic factors become the dominant factor among others

    Get PDF
During teachers' adaptation to online learning, the Covid-19 case has shown a decline indicating that general health conditions are starting to improve. This has encouraged the government to re-implement face-to-face learning while still paying attention to health protocols. During the transition from online to onsite learning, teachers must adjust their strategy, especially the assessment strategy, because onsite learning differs from pre-pandemic onsite learning. Therefore, this research aims to describe the assessment strategies applied by teachers during the transition period. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Researchers used observation sheets, and interviews as instruments, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman models. The findings from this study are that teachers use an assessment strategy based on three assessment approaches according to the 2013 curriculum: assessment as learning, assessment for learning, and assessment of learning. However, in this transitional period, teachers are considered to need to improve in applying technology to assessment. Besides that, the strategies used by teachers also tend to be monotonous. The results of this study are expected to be a reflection for teachers in determining the right strategy in the transition from online to onsite learning. &nbsp

    Get PDF
This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) and Numbered Heads Together (NHT) teaching methods on mathematics learning outcomes and student motivation at SMKN 2 Kota Madiun and SMKN 5 Kota Madiun. The results showed that the experimental groups taught using the TPS method achieved significantly higher mathematics learning outcomes compared to the control groups taught using the NHT method (F = 18.522, p < 0.001). Additionally, students with high learning motivation demonstrated better academic performance than those with low motivation (F = 100.93, p < 0.001). An interaction effect was observed between the teaching method and learning motivation, indicating that the combination of teaching method and motivation significantly influenced mathematics learning outcomes (F = 4.294, p = 0.040). These findings highlight the effectiveness of the TPS method in improving mathematics learning outcomes and emphasize the importance of considering student motivation in instructional design. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of these teaching methods in different educational contexts and student populations, providing valuable insights into enhancing mathematics education
