Human Adaptation Practices in Mountainous Regions: The Case of the Kom Highlands North West Region of Cameroon

    Get PDF
This paper examines the indigenous adaptation practices used by the inhabitants of the Kom highlands and questions the sustainability of such practices. This investigation was motivated by the environmental degradation signposts observed in the study area such: as extensive soil erosion, rapid rates of deforestation, landslides and other forms of mass movements seemingly provoked by human exigencies on nature through farming, settlements and road construction. Data for this study was collected mainly through field observations, interviews, structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. The findings revealed that though nature may have its own role to play, human pressures on the fragile mountainous topography have a fair share of the blame. It is against this backdrop that environmental friendly practices such as reforestation, improved agricultural practices and geological surveys before the construction of houses and roads in certain parts of the study area have been strongly recommended

Conditions for the Effective Use of Anti-Filtration Coating Types in Uncoated Channels

    Get PDF
The proper consideration of the filtration process is one of the most significant and challenging challenges in the design of earthen channels. The hydraulic properties of the current channels and the makeup of the channel soil must be considered in order to lower the cost of filtration in unlined channels. The quantity of filtration taking place in the soil bed is calculated when both sides of the channel are coated with concrete. Additionally, it was shown that utilizing a screen constructed of the local raw bentonite clay as an anti-filter coating in unlined channels can greatly minimize the amount of filtration, based on the measured values. The article outlines how to choose a theoretical foundation in the right way for reducing filtration costs

Influence of Tactual Orientation Skills on the Attainment of Self-Autonomy of Persons with Severe Visual Impairments in the English-Speaking (North West and South West) Regions, Cameroon

    Get PDF
One outcome of vision loss in persons with severe visual impairments is that they are forced to develop compensatory skills especially communication skills that can give them some self-autonomy in carrying out their education, career and meet up with life goals. Tactual orientation skills amongst others are communications skills needed to give them some level of self-autonomy. This study therefore aimed at investigating the influence of tactual orientation skills on the attainment of self-autonomy of persons with severe visual impairments in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. The mixed methods sequential explanatory design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from a sample of 286 persons with severe visual impairments. Data were collected with seven items on a Likert scale questionnaire and an interview guide for persons with severe visual impairments. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively using frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores while the. Spearman’s rho correlation test was used to verify hypothesis and make inferences. Qualitative data were analysed thematically with the aid of themes-groundings-quotations. Findings showed that Tactual orientation skills (R =0. 713) significantly and positively influenced the attainment of self-autonomy in persons with severe visual impairments. Descriptive findings also showed that the acquisition of tactual orientation skills gives persons with severe visual impairments self-autonomy in carrying out their daily activities, education, work and professional life. This implies that with these compensatory tactual orientation skills, they are capable of carrying out their lives with little or no support from those around them. It was recommended that, the state and parents should make available the necessary assistance needed by persons with severe visual impairments to develop their compensatory tactual orientation skills needed for the attainment of self-autonomy

Integrated Stem Education Curriculum and Pupils Learning in Tubah Sub Division, Mezam Division, North West Region, Cameroon

    Get PDF
Integrated STEM education approach combines the subject matter of two or more STEM subjects into a joint learning experience. This approach recognises that each STEM subject has overlapping, shared skills to offer. This work seeks to assess the impact of implementation of an integrated STEM education on pupils learning in the North West Region of Cameroon. The specific objective of the study was to find out the effect of content, teaching methods, teaching materials and evaluation strategies of integrated STEM education curriculum on pupils learning. The research methodology was a survey research design. The data was obtained from a 4-point Likert scale questionnaire and analysed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) and hypothesis was tested with the T-test. The results show that there is a strong positive relationship between integrated STEM education curriculum and pupils‟ learning. It was recommended that primary school teachers should endeavour to master integrated STEM education curriculum and implement it in their classroom

Microscopic Analysis of the Structure of Refractory Materials Developed on the Basis of Local Mineral Raw

    Get PDF
the article is devoted to the results of microscopic analysis of the structure of fire-resistant materials developed on the basis of local mineral raw materials. The authors point out that in this regard, a special place is occupied by microscopic analysis of refractory materials, because the use of various radiation and various designs of microscopes, from optical to electronic, requires various special preparation of objects and special methods for decoding the observed images. Moreover, the use of these methods in relation to the fire-resistant compositions obtained during the experiments, consisting of kaolin, wollastonite, sodium water glass, silica, finely dispersed thermovermiculite, silicon dioxide, dolomite, etc. demonstrates their moth-eye morphology, which provides a basis for other experiments related to increasing the quality of fire resistance of the objects under study

Sorting of Sowing Seeds With Increased Fractionation Accuracy

    Get PDF
The paper considers the problem of sorting sowing seeds of agricultural crops. A theoretical and constructive device has been developed that allows increasing the accuracy of separating seeds into fractions. Seed density was taken as the sorting criterion. The work of the sorter is considered on the example of sorting cotton seeds. A design has been developed that allows increasing the criterion for sorting seeds by weight of individual seeds and accuracy up to 27 times

Effects of Malaria Parasitaemia on Electrolytes (NA, K, CL, HCO3) and Some Liver Enzymes (AST and ALT) in Patient Attending University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital

    Get PDF
Malaria is a life threatening disease, with nearly half of the world’s population being vulnerable to the infection. The parasitic infection, when untreated or improperly treated, is characterized by fatal complications such as chronic kidney disease, liver disease and death. This study was designed to analyze blood electrolytes and liver enzymes of malaria patients attending UMTH, Maiduguri. Standard methods were used to determine malaria density, Na+, K+, Cl- and HCO3-) ALP, AST and ALT. Majority of the malaria patients (39.4%) are within the age group of 25 to 31 years. One hundred and sixty one (89.4%) out of 180 malaria patients have malaria density of (+) while 19 (10.6%) have malaria density of (++).The mean value of chloride of 102.29 ± 6.89 mmol/L in malaria patients was significantly lower than that of control subjects of 103.07 ± 5.81 (p˂ 0.05). The mean value of ALT of 10.35 ± 4.33 U/L in male malaria patients was significantly higher than that of female malaria patients of 8.87 ± 4.13 (p˂ 0.05). The mean values of Na+, K+, Cl-, HCO3-, ALP, AST and ALT in malaria patients with (+) showed no statistical difference compared to malaria patients with (++) (p˃ 0.05). The mean values of HCO3- of 20.65 ± 1.39 mmol/L, 20.72 ± 1.50 mmol/L, 21.20 ± 1.31 mmol/L, 21.23 ± 1.34 mmol/L and 22.14 ± 1.07 mmol/L for 18-24 years, 25-31 years, 32-38 years, 39-45 years and 46-52 years, respectively showed statistically significant difference. It is concluded that majority of malaria patients who are males and adults, seek medical attention at early stage of malaria infection and at the point of enrolment where the malaria infection have little or no effects on electrolytes and liver enzymes. This is an indication of effectiveness of awareness and control measures against malaria infection. However, as emphasized by previous authors, efforts are still needed toward control measures and eradication of malaria infection in this region
