    Reward system, teachers’ attitude to work and their productivity in public senior secondary schools in Ogun west senatorial district, Nigeria.

    Introduction: The way and manner teachers respond to their work positively or negatively has a long effect on its outcomes. Teachers are the major drive that develops and nurture students’ learning abilities. Hence, teachers’ effort needs to be rewarded appropriately to enhance utmost productivity. Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationship between reward system, teachers’ attitude to work and their productivity. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was adopted. A total of 1,500 respondents from the 30 sampled schools from a population of 86 schools was used.  Instruments are: Reward System Questionnaire (RSQ), Teachers’ Attitude to Work Questionnaire (TAWQ)) and Teachers’ Productivity Questionnaire (TPQ). Data obtained were analysed using PPMC ANOVA and Multiple Regression Analysis with the aid of SPSS at significance level of 0.05. The questionnaires were subjected to content-validity using experts’ opinion which was quantified by Content Validity Ration (CVR) while a cut-off of 0.56 was set. Also, test-retest method of reliability was used and the reliability index of RSQ was 0.81, TAWQ  0.79 while TPQ yielded 0.85. Results: The results showed majorly that, reward system has to do with teachers’ attitude to work and that there is no significant relationship between teacher’s attitude to work and teachers’ productivity. Recommendations: Administrators should be trained and sensitized on the value of reward system. They should be made to be aware that monetary rewards also motivate teachers to sure that reward system for teachers is paramount and attractive to ensure productivity and tenur

    Critique of policy frameworks for value education in primary school curriculum in Kenya

    Introduction: Ethical values are fundamental aspect of human life that governs the choice between doing good or bad. Recently, there has been an increase in cases of unethical behavior among school going children and the general public at large in, despite the various efforts being made by the government of Kenya to integrate values concerns in the curriculum. Purpose: The study was a critique of the policy frameworks for value education in primary school education curriculum in Kenya. Methodology: Since this is a philosophical study, critical method was used as the main research methodology. Results: The study established that the current value education strategy in the primary school curriculum in Kenya cannot guarantee the teaching of values concerns due to overemphasis on the academic excellence and the lack of well-articulated philosophy of education. Recommendations: The study recommended the introduction of an independent learning area on ethics so as to compliment other interventions in teaching of values. Also, teachers should be trained adequately on values pedagogy since the current approach assumes that teachers trained in teaching other academic subjects have the competency to teach value

    Normative leadership: A paradigm for promoting ethical practices in primary teacher education in Kenya

    Introduction: Ethical leadership is crucial in all organizations in relation to the successful attainment of institutional vision and mission. However, the influence of morally laden normative leadership on the promotion of ethical practices in primary teacher training colleges in Kenya has not yet been fully analysed and will require further interrogation. This gap is addressed in this study. Purpose: The study analysed how normative leadership can inspire ethical practices contained in Chapter Six of the Kenyan 2010 constitution, in the context of primary teacher education in Kenya. Methodology: Within the phenomenological research design, interviews were conducted to answer two questions, related to how normative leadership inspires ethical practices in public primary teachers training colleges (TTC) in Kenya. The purpose-sampling technique was used to select 35 leaders of TTC and seven regional education officers. Thematic analysis was used whereby the coded data was manually analysed on the basis of identified themes and presented in the form of tables and narratives. Results: The research findings revealed that as role models, normative leaders can succeed in creating a positive ethical environment that institutionalize ethical practices contained in Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution to be precise; integrity, discipline, dedication to duty and moral decision making within primary teacher education in Kenya. Conclusion: This study established that the impact of normative leaders as they demonstrate virtuous behaviour and are positive role models in the context of moral goodness and moral duty could inspire ethical practices within training colleges for teachers. Recommendation: The study proposed a philosophical paradigm of normative leadership that can positively influence the mind-set of leaders and their subordinates within TTC to internalize ethical practices on the foundation of moral goodness and moral duty

    Readability of basic science textbooks for junior secondary schools in Enugu state, Nigeria

    Introduction: Textbooks are essential component of the educational system that were heavily utilized by teachers and learners. Basic Science textbook authors should review the language structure and terminologies to enhance the readability of Basic Science textbooks. Purpose: The study aimed at analyzing the adequacy in the readability level of the recommended Basic Science textbooks in use junior secondary schools Enugu State, Nigeria.   Methodology:  An evaluation research design was adopted for this study. The population consisted of all the 60 recommended Basic Science that were approved for teaching of Basic Science in Junior Secondary Schools in Enugu state, Nigeria. The sample size of this study comprised of 33 recommended Basic Science textbook. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw eleven (11) recommended Basic Science textbooks each from JSS1, JSS 2 and JSS 3. The readability of the textbook was determined using Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula. The researchers subjected the instrument to content validation by three experts, with internal consistency reliability estimate of 0.92. Microsoft office word 2010 was used to assess the readability. The mean of the readability scores for each Basic science textbooks was determined and interpreted using the Flesh’s interpretation readability scores relative to Nigerian schools. Results: The findings of this study revealed that almost all the Basic Science textbooks are adequate and can easily be understood by the students.  Recommendations: The researchers recommended that the recommendation of Basic Science textbooks should not be based on the reputation of the publishers and the lobbying abilities but should be based on more objective criteria that relate to the textbook quality with the students as the principal focus.

    Funding options in the management of junior secondary schools in Kaduna state, Nigeria

    Introduction: Funding education in Nigeria has been challenging. Government has battled synchronous funding shortfalls and has categorically declared that funding education is the responsibility of all. Hence, School leaders are faced with the complex challenges of funding options and managing meagre finances and resources. Purpose: The objectives of the study were to find out the funding options, determine the management skills used for raising fund, ascertain the contributions of community in funding, and to determine the influence of managerial skills of principals on funding options. Design: Research questions and one null hypothesis were answered and tested to achieve the objectives. The cross-sectional survey design was used. The sample of 111 out of a population of 411 principals was used for the study. A 20 item questionnaire tagged: Funding Options Management Questionnaire (FOMQ) was employed for data collection. The statistical techniques used for analysis are mean and standard deviation for answering research questions and t- test of independence for test of hypothesis. Results: Findings revealed funding options to include: raising money through the Parents Teachers Association levies, user charges, school-based management charges, alumni assistance with less search for international grants. The managerial skills used to raise fund include cordial relationships, communication, planning, and coordinating.  In addition, there was a significant difference between funding options and principals’ managerial skills. Recommendations: It was recommended among others that school administrators should be creative in the funding options, search for international grants, advocate for supports, and government to re-engineer public campaign for awareness and participation of stakeholders in funding education

    Introduction: The increasing number of out of school children in Nigeria is very disturbing. It is observed that many school age children are out of school and are seen in the streets roaming about aimlessly during school hours without access to education. This disturbing trend is a complete negation of one of Nigeria’s philosophies of education which provides that education is a right of every Nigerian irrespective of gender, social status, religion, ethnic background and any peculiar individual challenges. This study examined School Based Management Committees (SBMCs) contribution in improving access to Basic Education in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Purpose: This review was to address the dearth in available literature for use by researchers, students, ministry of education and other related shareholders who will like to have access to literature to further strengthen and sustain school Based Management Committees contributions in improving access to Basic Education in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna state. Findings: The paper reviewed the strategic contributions of school Based Management Committees in improving access to Basic Education in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. This is because children of school age still roam the streets without access to Basic Education in communities where schools do not have functional school Based Management Committees.     Introduction: School environment is a learning place where the learners learn and interact with learning facilities in order to be socialized and face the challenges in the society. Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate on impact of school environment on social development of children with hearing impairment in School for the Deaf, Bassa, Plateau State. Methodology: The study was carried out with the use of questionnaires from fifty respondents as a method of data collection. The sample drawn from the Population for the study consists of students from students in School for the Deaf, Bassa, Plateau State. The data collected through this medium were analyzed using simple percentage and discussed with explanations. Results: The study find out Children’s social behaviors depend on several factors both human and physical environment. Classroom teachers and parents contribute immensely to the children’s social behaviors, limited access to both the students and teachers to reading materials, quality of school building and unavailability of good library has great influence on student social development. Recommendations: It is recommended that adequate classroom building, well-equipped library and other schools facilities should be provided in the school to help promote students social development

    Contributing factors to the performance of pre-service physical science teachers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in the Philippines

    Introduction: The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is a measurement of the quality and excellence of the Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) the country has produced. Passing the licensure exam brings prestige not only to pre-service physical science teachers but also to the academic institution, as it projects the public the impression of producing quality graduates. Purpose: The objective of the study is to determine the extent of the factors that contribute to the performance of pre-service physical science teachers in the licensure examination for teachers. Methodology: The purposive sampling technique was used. Since there are only 34 takers on the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in the year 2012, the author decided to utilize the total enumeration with 6 out of the total population being maximized in the reliability testing. A descriptive method of research design was employed to determine the extent of the contributing factors. Results: The subsequent results revealed that, in terms of teacher and review class factors, it was rated as high extent. School facilities factor was rated moderately extent and student factor as very high extent. Referring to the significant difference in the extent of the factors on the performance of pre-service physical science teachers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), it was found that there is no significant difference among the factors. Recommendations/Classroom Implications: The findings suggest that intensive review classes should be strengthened with a strong focus on the specialization and professional education subject areas as they contribute 40% each of the total result in the LET

    Changing migration realities: International students in South Africa and Nigeria

    Introduction: Africa has often been seen as a place of mass displacement and migration, as a result of poverty, bad governance, job insecurities, and unemployment, amongst others. Consequently, Africa has recorded irregular migration of people, specifically from one African territory to the advanced countries, solely on the search for ‘El Dorado’. However, in recent times, South Africa has witnessed an increasingly enrollment of international students, following the provided engagements, policies, educational access for both indigenes and international students. On the contrary, Nigeria seems not to be on the same train. Purpose: This study sought to examine the changing migration realities of international students seeking new horizons in South African universities, with the interest of highlighting possible measures that would accelerate the potentialities of various African universities, using South Africa and Nigeria as a case study. Push and pull theory of migration was employed to further the trend, migration as a global phenomenon. Methodology: The approach utilized in this study was to review and sourced for data from a few number of independent studies, from which the major objectives of the study were accomplished. Discussion of Findings/Results: South Africa and Nigeria was considered as a case study. This paper identified various underlying factors that limit and prompt the movement of people across various milieus. Recommendations: The study recommended collaboration and human capital development among African scholars and strongly argued for de-emphasis of existing curriculum and theories

    Career plateauing and its relationship with secondary school teachers’ pursuit of post-graduate studies in Nyandarua and Murang’a counties, Kenya

    Introduction: Kenyan teachers showed signs of plateauing in employment. This research examined whether the career plateauing was related to of teachers seeking postgraduate studies. Purpose: The study aimed at determining the types of career plateuing faced by public school teachers in secondary schools and to determine the relationship between career plateauing and the decisions of teachers to undertake different postgraduate courses. Methodology: The research employed correlational study design. The target population was 5,022 teachers, and 304 from Nyandarua and 348 from Murang'a Counties. A representative sample was determined using the formula by Krejcie & Morgan, which is used to calculate a sample size of 652. A questionnaire was used for data collection, and its relevance was reinforced by the experience of supervisors and other lecturers at the university. Test-Retest methodology was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and found a correlation coefficient of 0.86.  The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient, variance analysis and chi-square were used at 0.05 level of confidence. Results: Most teachers in the study did not experience career plateauing. There was a significant relationship between structural plateauing and nature of postgraduate course attended although there was no significant relationship across the entirety of the courses attended and overall career plateauing. Recommendations: The Teachers Service Commission should create a consistent roadmap for teachers' career development to address career plateauing and, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, should improve teachers' skills upgrades through capacity-building initiatives that should form the basis for promotion
