    This paper explores the use of Cinematic VR as a tool for performative interventions in public spaces within the context of modernist architecture in Singapore. The audio-visual experience interrogates the complex relationship among bodies, memories, and the urban environment. The research explores the narrative, cinematic, and acoustic strategies the film employs to immerse, perform, or navigate urban spaces, fostering awareness of the immediate surroundings. Critical inquiries include understanding the underlying acoustics of the urban fabric, the ability to evoke memories through sounds, and the dynamics of performing in public space for a 360 camera. Performing The City in Cine VR serves as a contemplation on the psycho-geographic dimensions of a city, examining points of view through 360° perspectives. It evaluates how the spatial setup influences audiences' experience in the VR headset. The urban space is analysed as a textured and layered text, incorporating elements such as fragments of songs, advertisements, and announcements referencing the space as a sonic experience. This research extends the understanding of the potential of Cinematic VR, particularly in exploring digital heritage and the interconnectedness of bodies, memories, and urban environments. It highlights the transformative impact of immersive storytelling in reshaping perceptions and relationships with the urban landscape, contributing to the evolving body of knowledge in this field

    Facet-Dependent Catalytic Performance of Au Nanocrystals for Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction

    Nanostructured metal catalysts have attracted great interest due to their extraordinary performance for electrocatalysis including electrochemical nitrogen reduction (ENRR). However, their working mechanisms for ENRR are still not fully understood. Herein, seven monofaceted polyhedral Au nanocrystals were synthesized and systemically compared to elucidate the relation between Au crystal facets and NRR performance. It is found that polyhedra with high-index facets catalytically outperform those with low-index facets. Specifically, Au nanostars enclosed with (321) facets show a high NH3 production rate of 2.6 μg h–1 cm–2 (20 μg h–1 mg–2) and faradaic efficiency of 10.2% at −0.2 V, which are 3.1- and 5.1-folds larger than those of nanocubes enclosed with (100) facets. As revealed by theoretical investigation, a larger energy barrier for reduction of H+ to H* (ΔGH*) hinders occurrence of HER on the Au(321) surface, thus ensuring better NRR selectivity. Meanwhile, a lower energy barrier for formation of N2H2* on the catalyst surface and a larger energy barrier for decomposing the formed N2H2* back into N2 and 2H* jointly favor a higher NH3 production rate. This study provides mechanistic insights into ENRR and rational design of metal nanocrystals for electrocatalysis

    We blink our eyes more often than necessary to keep our cornea adequately lubricated. Blink rates are known to fluctuate depending on the task at hand. It is known that eye blinks do modulate activity between two large scale brain networks involving the way attention is being directed. This raises the question whether there are perceptual or cognitive consequences of eye blinks that could justify the high blink rates? This research first assessed the perceptual impact of eye blinks using a behavioural paradigm. Visual performance after eye blinks has been measured using a series of rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) tasks. We found that visual identification performance was enhanced (~15% points increased accuracy) in the first 300 ms immediately after an eye blink. A second, later period with improved performance was also observed in several of these experiments. However, the early boost only occurred for object recognition tasks. Tasks involving parietal function, or non-foveated stimuli, did not enjoy performance boosts at the same scale. In a second study, participants judged the orientations of pairs of gabor gratings that could appear at varying distances from fixation. Detection performance was boosted in one instance after eye blinks but was also better after artificial blinks. This suggests that in the case of distributed spatial attention, just the transient disruption of visual input can be sufficient to induce an attentional boost. Lastly, Magnetoencephalo-graphy (MEG) was used to investigate neural activity time-locked to eye blinks. We found attention related alpha-beta (8-30 Hz) activity stemming from the eye blink-related medial posterior parietal cortex for both voluntary eye blinks (up to ~700 ms from an eye blink) and spontaneous blinks (up to ~500 ms from an eye blink). While the role of attention related alpha-beta activity in the mPPC is unknown in this study, as attention boost was found post-eye blinks in object recognition within similar time windows, there lies the possibility of a relationship between eye blinks and the mPPC with attentional implications
