As amalgams of the different spatial logics of other places, reassembled by globalization and the fantasies of real estate development, cities today are becoming what Michel Foucault has termed heterotopias. Assemblies of ruins, theme parks, entirely copied towns, simulacra, business districts on a globalized template, reconstructed historic districts, settlements, and ghost towns are finding a new expression in the contemporary world. Nowhere has this been more visible recently than in China, and areas are coming under China’s developmental influence. Copied cities, ghost cities, and large-scale Chinese investments in Africa are heterotopias because they contain the idea of accumulating different times, cultures, and countries within one place, just as a theme park has all these different place experiences in a bounded zone outside of its own time and culture.
Ella Raidel has explored these phenomena through film and cinematic virtual reality, and this artist’s book reviews and reflects on the last two decades of her award-winning work. In Ella Raidel’s films, urbanism and architecture, theory, politics, social change, and image production are intertextually presented, opening a discursive space for investigation and commentary. This book will be interesting for art and film practitioners and architecture, film, urbanization, and infrastructure students, especially those who see cinema as a way of exploring these subjects
Replication Data for: On-chip topological THz biosensors
On-chip terahertz (THz) biosensors have enormous potential in advancing the development of integrable devices for real-time, label-free, and noninvasive detection of proteins, DNA, and cancerous tissue. However, high absorption of THz waves by water necessitates evanescent field-based biosensing. The conventional on-chip THz biosensors with small mode confinement volumes and scaling sensitivity to defects severely limit the interaction of analyte with the electromagnetic field. Here, we reveal a topological waveguide cavity system with topologically protected propagating interfacial modes, exhibiting evanescent waves with an out-of-plane field extent of 0.3λ0, where λ0 is the wavelength corresponding to the cavity resonance frequency. Our experiments involving biomolecule detection and leaf-hydration monitoring show that the near-field of high-Q topological cavity resonances accurately detects minute frequency shifts over extended periods, facilitating real-time sensing and monitoring of biological matter. This repository contains the data and code necessary to reproduce the results in the paper titled “Active subduction and strain partitioning in western Myanmar revealed by a dense survey GNSS network”.
In particular, it contains:
1. Raw GNSS observations (RINEX format) for all sites surveyed in Myanmar between 2016 and 2020, and the metadata (antenna & receiver information, height, GAMIT processing tables, and survey logs) required to process them.
2. The processed timeseries (GAMIT .pos format) for both survey and continuous GNSS sites that were processed as part of this work. The timeseries also include the positions for surveys conducted prior to our work. All timeseries are reported in the ITRF2014 reference frame.
3. The interseismic velocities estimated for each site with sufficient timeseries observations, including survey, continuous and previously published sites in the region. The velocities are reported in 3 reference frames: ITRF2014, relative to the Sunda plate, and relative to the Burma (Myanmar) microplate, as described in the text.
4. Block modeling input files including the modeled fault network and a 3D fault mesh for the Rakhine-Bangladesh megathrust, analysis scripts, and output results for the three block models reported in the text

This submission is a dataset of N=20 mother-infant dyads who each performed two play conditions (solo or social play). The data contains raw codes for positive, neutral and negative emotional expressions, for both mother and infant, time-coded during 10 minutes of play.
