    Quantum Phase Transition as a Promising Route to Enhance the Critical Current in Kagome Superconductor CsV3Sb5

    Developing strategies to systematically increase the critical current, the threshold current below which the superconductivity exists, is an important goal of materials science. Here, the concept of quantum phase transition is employed to enhance the critical current of a kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, which exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity that are both affected by hydrostatic pressure. As the CDW phase is rapidly suppressed under pressure, a large enhancement in the self-field critical current (Ic, sf) is recorded. The observation of a peak-like enhancement of Ic, sf at the zero-temperature limit (Ic, sf(0)) centered at p* ≈ 20 kbar, the same pressure where the CDW phase transition vanishes, further provides strong evidence of a zero-temperature quantum anomaly in this class of pressure-tuned superconductor. Such a peak in Ic, sf(0) resembles the findings in other well-established quantum-critical superconductors, hinting at the presence of enhanced quantum fluctuations associated with the CDW phase in CsV3Sb5

    Women in Intellectual Property: Are Law and Technology a “Double Whammy”?

    While studies exist on women in law and women in science and engineering, women practising in intellectual property (IP) have largely been invisible. This is despite the fact that the practice of IP often happens at intersections of law and technology. This chapter examines the experiences of women practising in IP in Australia (62) and New Zealand (45) with respect to negative experiences they encounter at such intersections. It compares and contrasts the experiences of women practising in patents, trade marks, copyright and all IP. It finds that, across all fields, participants reported that they encountered negative experiences when the subject matter became about technology. While women practising in patents experience a "double whammy" in comparison to women in trade marks, certain women in copyright appear to experience a "triple whammy" as they additionally operate in feminised industries. The chapter concludes that, though gender achievements have been made, work remains in removing negative presumptions around women and technology in the practise of intellectual property

    Insights into the natural and cultural history of Typha orientalis (Raupō) in Aotearoa New Zealand

    A new multi-proxy paleo database for lake ecosystem and catchment change in Aotearoa New Zealand points to the potential resource and ecosystem service roles of Typha orientalis (raupō). In the context of chronic wetland degradation in Aotearoa New Zealand over the past century, this iconic yet enigmatic wetland plant can be viewed, alternately, as an invasive threat; a valuable cultural and economic resource; and a natural, indigenous agent for bioremediation. Our investigation reconstructs the history of raupō over the past ~1000 years, based on 92 new pollen records generated from lake sites across Aotearoa New Zealand. At almost every site where raupō is present today, its expansion is promoted to varying extents during periods of human activity and at 87% of sites investigated, raupō shows its maximum palynological abundance post human arrival. Multiple patterns of response over time point to a range of hydrological, trophic, and cultural scenarios that are conducive for raupō expansion, raising prospects for its potential role in mitigating the ecological impacts of disturbance. Raupō expansion, promoted by anthropogenic forest clearances and associated sediment and nutrient flux, would in turn have provided new opportunities for its use as a valuable food and material resource, prompting further questions as to the extent it was deliberately managed by indigenous populations. As both a benefactor from, and provider for, expanding populations, raupō may be regarded as a human associate in Aotearoa New Zealand prehistory. As well as being indigenous to Aotearoa New Zealand, T. orientalis also occurs naturally in Australia and east Asia and shares the intrinsic ecological and morphological attributes of the ~40 species or hybrids of Typha that span most of the planet. This work therefore may encourage wider application of the genus as a biocultural asset informed from its local natural history

    Mitigation of Radiation-Induced Attenuation of Optical Fibers Through photobleaching: Study of Power Dependence at cryogenic temperatures

    Radiation-induced attenuation can pose a great challenge to the implementation of optical sensors in extreme environments. Photobleaching is known to mitigate the damage caused by radiation but a lot is yet to be investigated. In this work, we look at the power-dependence of the photobleaching phenomenon at cryogenic temperature. We used three standard fibers carrying around 2mW of light at 1550nm and 4, 0.4, 0.09 of the light at 1050nm respectively; and a fourth standard control fiber that carried no photobleaching light. We observed a large reduction in radiation-induced attenuation in all of the fibers with light at 1050nm when compared to the control fiber. This reduction, however is not linear and saturates for higher powers. These results are consistent with our theoretical models

    A large-scale CRISPR screen reveals context-specific genetic regulation of retinal ganglion cell regeneration

    Many genes are known to regulate retinal regeneration after widespread tissue damage. Conversely, genes controlling regeneration after limited cell loss, as per degenerative diseases, are undefined. As stem/ progenitor cell responses scale to injury levels, understanding how the extent and specificity of cell loss impact regenerative processes is important. Here, transgenic zebrafish enabling selective retinal ganglion cell (RGC) ablation were used to identify genes that regulate RGC regeneration. A single cell multiomics-informed screen of 100 genes identified seven knockouts that inhibited and 11 that promoted RGC regeneration. Surprisingly, 35 out of 36 genes known and/or implicated as being required for regeneration after widespread retinal damage were not required for RGC regeneration. The loss of seven even enhanced regeneration kinetics, including the proneural factors neurog1, olig2 and ascl1a. Mechanistic analyses revealed that ascl1a disruption increased the propensity of progenitor cells to produce RGCs, i.e. increased ‘fate bias’. These data demonstrate plasticity in the mechanism through which Müller glia convert to a stem-like state and context specificity in how genes function during regeneration. Increased understanding of how the regeneration of disease-relevant cell types is specifically controlled will support the development of disease-tailored regenerative therapeutics

    On the Definability and Complexity of Sets and Structures

    We prove results at the intersection of computability theory and set theory, broadly concerning notions of complexity in the sense of definability. We consider these in the contexts of problems in classical mathematics: in the first part of this thesis, we present the solution to a problem in uncountable computable structure theory concerning the construction of complicated uncountable free abelian groups, which was obtained in collaboration with Greenberg, Shelah, and Turetsky. In the second part, we turn towards fractal geometry and its connection with both descriptive set theory and algorithmic randomness. We construct a co-analytic set of reals which fails Marstrand’s Projection Theorem, a seminal result of classical fractal geometry and geometric measure theory. The construction uses computability-theoretical tools, in particular the notion of Kolmogorov complexity.</p

    Mental health issues are an increasing problem worldwide and have yet to be addressed in the design world within the context of urban city environments. The pace of urban densification and the environments it creates neglect the impacts on human health. Within the urban environment, daily routines become monotonous, involving a relentless bombardment of sensory stimuli. Sensory overloading factors, such as unpleasant odours, erratic movement, and chaotic noises, have the potential to trigger mental health issues or fear.This thesis delves into the mental health implications stemming from the sensory-overloading urban landscape. Using a research-through-design methodology, this study addresses the importance of 'healing/therapeutic' landscape spaces in the urban environment conversation. By combining elements of landscape architecture and literature focused on sensory implications and mental health impacts, this thesis aims to create a public space that offers respite. This would enable individuals to temporarily disconnect from their overwhelming sensory surroundings as well as desensitise their senses.</p
