The Impact of US-China Decoupling Policies on the Reconfiguration of US- and China-Based Global Value Chains - An Analysis of the ICT Industry
The US and China are central actors in international trade. In recent years, trade tensions between these two nations have escalated, particularly within technology-intensive sectors. It is crucial to conduct a deep analysis of the impact of US-China decoupling policies on the value adding activities, the gains in value-added, and the positions within the value chains for both countries, and for other nations involved in global value chains (GVCs).This study the value-added dissemination at each stage within the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. Firts, the connotations of the decoupling policies of China and the US are defined through the lenses of Global Value Chain (GVC) theory and Hegemonic Stability Theory (HST). Second, empirical analyses are conducted to investigate the value-added gains, value-added ratios, and the reconfiguration of value chain positions within the ICT industry in both the US- and China-based GVCs, pre- and early-decoupling. Finally, the study interprets the impact of US-China decoupling policies on the GVCs reconfiguration, employing GVC theory and HST, and presents the propositions accordingly.The ICIO data from 2016 to 2020 are collected and collated using the OECD's analytical AMNE database. The relevant sample data are then subjected to GVC network topology analysis, GVC curves analysis, and robustness tests utilizing RStudio. The findings indicate that the ICT firms in both US- and China-based GVCs experience an increase in value-added gains, a decrease in value-added rates, and an advancement in their GVCs positions. Additionally, industrialized third-party economies in US-allied countries, such as Taiwan, Japan, and France, show corresponding increases in value-added gains. The study concludes that China's policies related to independent innovation and cybersecurity, along with US policies on export control and investment restrictions, significantly impact the value-added performance of GVCs and the relative positioning of GVCs in the ICT industry. These findings illustrate specific changes in value-added gain changes among GVC-participating countries, thereby enhancing the understanding of the particular impacts of the US-China decoupling policies. Consequently, this study provides the insights for policymakers in China and the US and offers a theoretical framework for strategic development for firms in the ICT industry across the US and China and related countries.</p
Numerical simulations on the AC loss of REBCO stacks under rotating magnetic fields
AC loss presents a significant challenge for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) rotating machines. To date, the behaviour of total AC loss (Qtol) (with current) and magnetization loss (Qm) (without current) in a single HTS tape under rotating magnetic fields (RF) have been explored. However, a research gap remains in understanding how these findings translate to the more complex HTS windings of rotating machines. Further exploration is needed to understand the loss behaviour of more complex HTS structures, such as HTS stacks. In this work, Qtol and Qm, in the HTS stacks under RF and a perpendicular AC standing wave magnetic field are numerically investigated. Two different RF models are considered: one is the Uni-RF model, characterized by a uniform field with equal field amplitudes and phases at each position, and the other is a non-uniform field created by a rotating Halbach array, referred to as the Hal-RF model. The dependence of AC loss on parameters such as the number of tapes in the stacks, tape width (2a), and the inclination angle (α) of tapes, which refers to the angle between the normal direction of the stack and the vertical direction, have been explored. The number of tapes in the stacks ranges from 1 to 16, α ranges from 0° to 90°, and the tape width includes 4 mm and 40 mm. Additionally, different rotating field directions are also considered. Interestingly, the analytical values from Brandt and Indenbom equation for Qm of a superconducting strip (BI-strip) are close to Qm results of the stacks under the standing wave at high fields, while they are over twice as high as those in the Hal-RF model at 1 T. This suggests the BI-strip equation is not reliable for predicting Qm under RF at high fields. We also show in the Hal-RF model that different rotation directions of the field lead to varying Qm and Qtol when asymmetric Jc (B, θ) data are applied. Moreover, it has been observed that the inclination angle has no impact on Qm under uniform RF while significantly impacts both Qm and Qtol in the Hal-RF model
Liquid consumption and Islam: The Continual Drift Adjustment (CDA) framework
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the tendencies of liquid consumption in Muslim communities and analyse its impact on Muslims’ consumption practices from the holistic perspective. Liquid consumption refers to a transient and less-materialised mode of consumption that requires both minimal attachment to possessions and hybrid ownership. Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual paper that is based on the distinction between Islam as a holistic perspective and Islamic practice as it is applied in different contexts and situations. The Continual Drift Adjustment (CDA) framework of Muslim consumers’ behaviour is developed to be deployed as an analysis framework. Findings: The CDA framework maintains that some problematic cases of Muslim consumption behaviours indicate the drift towards disbalance. Depending on their nature, liquid consumption practices can have different impacts on the drift. Liquid consumption practices underscored by instrumental dissemblance, intellectual insecurity and spiritual scepticism intensify the drift, whereas the incorporation of spiritual sincerity, faithful submission and existential gratefulness into practices and behaviour helps to attenuate the drift. Research limitations/implications: This research contributes to the theory of liquid consumption by incorporating the religious perspective. Liquid consumption in Islam is a complex area of research, specifically considering the ambivalent meanings of liquidity in Islamic thought. Practical implications: Marketers of liquid consumption solutions must be aware of these offerings’ double-edged impact on the well-being of Muslim communities. Muslim consumers should be guided towards spiritual sincerity, faithful submission and existential gratefulness in the best way possible, although it must be noted that the customary techniques of marketing would lean towards stimulating the disbalance. Originality/value: This research is unique because it deals with a topic that has not been researched in the Islamic marketing discipline to this date

This paper explores how a transition pedagogy can inform the design of a multi-stage, multidisciplinary capstone project in a graduate programme, and how integrating curriculum design and WIL thinking could better facilitate the transition of graduates from university to the workforce. The paper draws insights from a specific case study and relevant literature.
Transition pedagogy explores how the academic community “theorise and impact our students’ experiences of their determinative first year in higher education” (Kift 2015: 51). Gale and Parker (2011: 27-28) summarise key features of a transition pedagogy as an approach that is: coherent, integrated, coordinated, intentional, cumulative, interconnected and explicit.
The project tasked students with developing a professional business case. Designed as a capstone team-based experience, the project allowed the students to leverage their common foundation and to access their diverse disciplinary specialisations. A distinctive element of project was its consulting nature – a commercial team delivering to a public sector-client. The approach, underpinned by the New Zealand Treasury’s Better Business Case framework, explicitly encouraged the disciplinary and multi-disciplinary work to happen.
The linked stages of this project form a sequence of interactive, reflective and iterative learning opportunities – an “an experiential learning process” (Winborg and Hagg 2022: 674). The consulting project was “geared toward making connections between classroom learning and on-the-job experiences” (Kramer and Usher, 2011: 2). The ‘gearing’ in this project was multi-layered linking:
•one sub-case to another supported by an overarching strategic objective;
•one task to another, with feedback, reflection and refinement in between;
•one student to another to iterate between independent progress and collaboration;
•one discipline to another, highlighting how multiple disciplines work together to deliver.
In the case study considered in this paper, the students took the initiative and kicked the project up a further gear and engaged with an actual policy agency and government officials, creating a full work-integrated learning experience for themselves.
The paper offers insights for educators into programme and course design to support graduates' transition to the workforce, with a focus on working across disciplines. It underscores embedding transition pedagogy within a programme of study. The paper outlines an approach and set of practices to assist students integrate their earlier education with work-focussed learning. We posit that earlier intentional integration of this approach into curriculum design will better build adaptability skills and support transition to work
Indigenizing research methods: making research outcomes better for all
In the context of Indigenizing academic practices and promoting cultural inclusivity within library and information institutions, this paper explores the significance of incorporating Indigenous approaches to research within LIS research methods courses. It argues that Indigenous research methods can be adapted and applied to other contexts, especially where research isbeing done in Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) communities, who also have a history of being marginalized in research. This paper advocates for research methods to be transformed by incorporating Indigenous approaches into research methods education and empowering students to become culturally competent researchers. Path and boundary-path groupoids of nonfinitely aligned higher-rank graphs over weakly quasi-lattice ordered groups
Given a weakly quasi-lattice ordered group (Q, P ) and a P-graph Λ (not necessarily finitely aligned), we construct a locally compact Hausdorff path space Fc(Λ) inside the space F(Λ) of filters in Λ. When Λ is finitely aligned, Fc(Λ) coincides with F(Λ). We construct a semigroup action T of P on Fc(Λ) whose semidirect product groupoid GΛ is a Hausdorff ample groupoid. We call GΛ the path groupoid of Λ, which is in general distinct from the one that Spielberg associates to nonfinitely aligned left cancellative small categories. We show GΛ coincides with the Toeplitz groupoid of Renault and Williams and with the path groupoid of Yeend under each of their hypotheses. If Q is countable and amenable, then GΛ is amenable by a theorem of Renault and Williams. We also define a boundary-path space ∂Λ that is a closed invariant subset of the unit space of GΛ. The reduction G∂Λ of GΛ to ∂Λ is the boundary-path groupoid of Λ, which too we reconcile with the relevant groupoids of Renault-Williams and Yeend. For a particular non-finitely aligned P-graph Λ0, we show that our path groupoid GΛ0 and Spielberg’s groupoid of Λ0 have C*-algebras with different ideal structures.</p
The causal effects of religious service attendance on prosocial behaviours in New Zealand: A national longitudinal study
We investigate the causal effects of religious service attendance on prosocial behaviours using longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of 33,198 New Zealanders collected between 2018 and 2021. Our study innovates in three ways: (1) we use longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data; (2) we incorporate measures of help received alongside self-reported giving; and (3) our statistical models are designed to address causal questions, rather than simply to describe change over time. We model causal contrasts for three hypothetical interventions – increasing, decreasing, or maintaining religious service attendance – and assess their effects on eight distinct prosocial domains. Study 1 focuses on self-reported charitable donations and volunteering. Studies 2 and 3 examine receiving help – both personal and financial – from family, friends, and the wider community. Across all analyses, we find that the causal effects of religious service attendance are notably smaller than cross-sectional correlations suggest. However, even modest increases in regular attendance would result in charitable donations equivalent to approximately 4% of the New Zealand Government’s annual spending – a considerable public benefit. By applying robust methods for causal inference to national-scale panel data, our study provides insights that can inform public policy about the social functions of religious participation and advances a methodological framework for investigating the social consequences of cultural practices
Māori data sovereignty: contributions to data cultures in the government sector in New Zealand
Māori data sovereignty, an extension of Indigenous data sovereignty, is gaining recognition as a vital element of data-related strategy, management, policy, and culture in New Zealand. Driven by the principles of tino-rangatiratanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori data sovereignty emphasizes Māori self-determination and control over their data. This article explores the significance of Māori data sovereignty within public and private sector organizations in New Zealand through interviews with data experts. The outcomes of this research highlight the importance of building relationships based on trust (whanaungatanga), asserting the right to self-determination (rangatiratanga), working collectively for the benefit of all (kotahitanga), and promoting learning and capacity building (akoranga) as key principles of Māori data sovereignty. While there is a growing recognition of Māori data sovereignty, power imbalances and the need for greater education and awareness persist. The study emphasizes the need for organizations to embrace a kaupapa Māori lens and tikanga Māori values to foster inclusive data cultures that uphold the rights and aspirations of Māori communities. Collaboration and further research are essential to advance Māori data sovereignty and integrate its principles into information policies and practices across sectors, thus promoting a data culture that respects Indigenous rights and collective well-being
