The Significance of Androgen Receptor in Oncogenesis and Cancer Treatment: Emphasis on Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Get PDF
The androgen receptor (AR) is a transcription factor that is dependent upon ligand activation and is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily. AR has been found to have a role in cancers of the prostate, breast, ovarian, nasal cavity, and lung. It has been seen that AR plays a significant role in both the early and later stages of prostate cancer as AR is expressed in almost every primary prostate cancer. An evolving prognostic and therapeutic role of AR also exists in breast cancer as increased expression of AR has been linked to improved survival. In the case of OSCC, the role of hormonal therapy as a prognostic marker remains to be explored. Some reports have failed to identify the expression of AR in oral cavity cancers or any significant associations, while others have predicted AR-expressing tumours to have a worse prognosis. This review narrates the current research on AR and how it can be applied in future research

Social Media Use During COVID-19: Real and Fake News?

    Get PDF
The outbreak of COVID-19 led the world into disarray as people were forced to isolate themselves. Being known to be social animals, humans developed a coping mechanism: Increased use of social media as a means to bridge the physical distance. This review article aims to assess the impact, both positive and negative, of increased social media usage on lives. The Pandemic made it clear that whilst social media is an important outlet for information, it is also the culprit since most of the websites spread false/fabricated information to increase their viewership. As a result, it amplified anxiety and depression in people’s lives. Tools to monitor social media information are a necessity to outweigh its drawbacks. This includes filtering misinformation, providing mental health support, and encouraging people to refrain from spreading dubious content that lacks strong evidence

Sudden Vision Loss in a Young Patient with Pulmonary Hypertension, A Rare and Unusual Finding

    Get PDF
Loss of vision associated with pulmonary hypertension in the pediatric age group has been rarely reported in the literature and often goes unnoticed for a long period. Pulmonary hypertension may manifest as shortness of breath limiting the activity of the individual, palpitation, headaches, easy fatiguability, dizziness been the most common symptoms encountered. However, primary pulmonary hypertension would not present itself instead secondary to other diseases like congenital heart disease, lung disease, connective tissue disorders or genetic diseases. Our case demonstrated a 17-year old individual with a primary complaint of progressive loss of vision in the left eye leading to complete vision loss. The patient experienced dyspnea two years back which exacerbated affecting his normal routine activity. His Echocardiography revealed severe pulmonary hypertension and was started on appropriate medications. His vision worsened and slit-lamp examination revealed multiple hemorrhages. Further investigations with FFA and OCT revealed significant hypoperfusion and significant elevation of the retina of the left eye. Anti-VEGF injections were given in an attempt to restore vision, but it resulted in no further improvement. Our case emphasizes the importance of prompt ophthalmologic examination in Pulmonary Hypertension

Enhancing Depth of Reflection of Family Medicine Residents: Results of an Intervention

    Get PDF
The ability to reflect in professional practice is the cornerstone of self-directed learning. Reflective practice in medicine is an important teaching-learning modality for improving decision-making and clinical reasoning. It is a strategy for self-regulation of clinical and academic performance. This study was undertaken with the aim of improving the reflective ability skills of family medicine residents through the introduction of reflective practice at Aga Khan University. This was a case study using a pre-post design. A questionnaire was administered to assess the baseline level of reflection in family medicine residents, followed by a workshop on reflective practice to orient residents about the process and levels of reflection. Residents were asked to document reflective logs on a blog, feedback was provided. Post-intervention data were collected by re-administration of the questionnaire the change in the reflective level. Pre-post questionnaire data were analysed for comparisons using the Wilcoxin Sign Rank test on SPSS version 19. Out of 15 eligible residents, a total of 13 residents were available during the study period. In a pre-intervention questionnaire, reflective levels across the domains indicated that residents used reflection 50% of the time which increased post-intervention to more than 80% of the time. The degree of pre-post difference was lowest in the ‘Habitual Action Domain’ and largest in the domains of ‘Reflection’ and ‘Critical Reflection’ (4.1-4.8 and 3.8-4.5). Reflective practice is an effective strategy to develop residents as reflective thinkers by increasing their depth of reflection. Facilitation of their reflection through feedback enhances their ability to reflect
