Work motivation and employee engagement at a state-owned enterprise in Richards Bay.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The study aimed to explore the relationship between work motivation and employee engagement at a selected parastatal organisation in Richards Bay, South Africa. Employees are a company's greatest asset, and increasing their motivation and engagement is essential for corporate expansion. Organisations are confronted with several difficulties, including high absenteeism rates, low productivity, and high labour turnover rates which are related to low employee engagement and a lack of motivation at work. The following theories were used in the study, that is Herzberg's Two Factor Theory and Alderfer's ERG Theory, both of which recognize the components that are related to motivation. The researcher selected Kahn’s Need Satisfying approach, Job Demand Resource Model (2007)and Lawrence & Nohria's Four Drive Theory (2002) to unpack the factors of employee engagement. A quantitative research approach was adopted to collect primary data in the form of questionnaires. Standardized questionnaires namely the revised Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) were used to measure employee engagement and they were distributed electronically and manually. The Work Preference Inventory was employed to evaluate both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 24 was used to analyze the data since it enabled data analysis and statistical test execution. The research population consisted of 329 junior employees from the parastatal the”Krejcie and morgan model” suggested that 180 participants was appropriate for the study. The researcher received 93 responses. The findings show that only 52% of the employees feel like they are bursting with energy as they are not motivated, while approximately 48% feel happy when they are working intensely. Only 41% indicated that they feel like going to work every day. The study found about 54% of the respondents enjoy trying to solve complex problems at their workplace, while about 56% enjoy tackling problems that are completely new to them. The Work Preference Inventory, which measures intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in individuals, is built to be reliable as it captures the key components of the intrinsic drive, which are self-determination, competence, and work participation. The study concluded that motivation was related to needs satisfaction and a product that comes from a cognitively conscious decision. Given the limitations of the research and operational nature of the parastatal setting, it proved difficult to get questionnaires promptly as the employees follow a shift schedule. The study recommended the need for organisations to involve employees in decision-making to address employee engagement and employee motivation. It further recommends the need to invest in the two constructs
An examination of information ethics standards in the management of open access electronic information resources (OAEIR) by Zimbabwean university libraries = Ukuhlolwa kwamazinga oLwazi lwendlelakuziphatha ekulawulweni kokufinyelela okuvulelekile emithonjeni kagesi ngemitapo yolwazi yasenyuvesi yaseZimbabwe.
Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. The information society has given university libraries new technological tools and platforms to connect with their clients, eliminating the need to constrain what the library publishes and provision of access to its clients. However, it also unlocked many unanswered ethical questions and dimensions. The proliferation of open access electronic information resources (OAEIR) has created more significant ethical challenges for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals, from the privacy, accuracy, property, and access to ethical standards, more so from the African cultural perspective. LIS professionals' adoption of information ethics standards, ethical dimensions and associated dilemmas are increasingly becoming topical issues in the information society due to the proliferation of OAEIR. The study was conducted to determine the adoption of information ethics standards in managing OAEIR by LIS professionals. Additionally, the study sought to determine information ethics dilemmas encountered by LIS professionals in executing open access electronic information management processes. Finally, the study sought to establish contextual information ethics standards that LIS professionals could implement in the open access electronic information management processes. The study adopted the deontological ethics theoretical framework and PAPA information ethics framework to thoroughly interrogate the library information processes, which are creation, organisation, and dissemination. The study used a pragmatism worldview as a research paradigm, a mixed methods research approach, and a sequential explanatory
research design. The study population was drawn from LIS professionals serving in nine Zimbabwean university libraries. The study used the census survey sampling techniqu e and purposive sampling for operational level LIS professionals and managerial level LIS professionals, respectively. Additionally, the study used document analysis, which looked at OAEIR related policies and standard operating procedures. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis procedures were employed through descriptive statistics analysis and the SPSS, and thematic content analysis, respectively. The findings revealed that there was generally a lack of information and awareness on information ethics available to LIS professionals. University libraries' affiliation to the LIS code of ethics was viewed in terms of being members of either AfLIA or IFLA, but with no clear policy guidelines on how they would draw from these institutions’ codes. Local professional associations such as ZimLA and ZULC were not doing enough to conscientise LIS professionals on the profession's ethics. Resultantly, university libraries lacked clear policy direction regarding LIS professionals' ethical obligations in electronic content, affecting how ethical issues were being implemented in everyday electronic library workflow operations. Information management in this contemporary library environment and the information-seeking behaviour of library clients have created many ethical dilemmas for LIS professionals. The electronic information revolution has created many problematic ethical grey areas for LIS professionals, and generally in all PAPA, in the management processes of OAEIR. LIS professionals' application of ethical standards in the day-to-day management of OAEIR was influenced by duty-based principles at the library level, aided by experience. LIS professionals' culture greatly impacted the adoption and application of ethical principles and decisions in the management of OAEIR, ushering in an African culture ethical dimension. The available global codes of ethics standards for LIS professionals applied to LIS professionals in Zimbabwe in a broader sense, hence the need for a contextualised code of ethics framework. The study's findings contribute towards awareness, perception, and adoption of information ethics standards by Zimbabwean university libraries and other local affiliated associations, including managing ethical dilemmas emanating from the management of OAEIR. The study findings contribute a cultural dimension to the deontology ethics theoretical framework, thereby enhancing appreciation of the theory. The findings also contribute to more research on information ethics in relation to the LIS profession, especially from the African perspective, in addition to the offering of the discipline in LIS studies across the country and beyond, especially as viewed through the eyes of the contemporary library field.

Educators’ experiences on parental involvement towards learners with learning barriers: a case study of a high school in Mooi River.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The purpose of this study was to explore parental involvement towards learners with learning barriers. This is a qualitative study that was carried out in one of the rural schools in Mooi River, under Umgungundlovu District. Purposive sampling is the sampling technique that was used to select the participants, which were the educators. Data was generated using questionnaires with open-ended questions and focus group interview for further probing questions, and data was analysed using thematic analysis. This study was aligned to the interpretivist paradigm and also guided by Epstein’s theory of overlapping sphere model. The findings in this study clearly indicated that parental involvement is an issue in this school and the educators are not well equipped in order to support learners with learning barriers. The findings further indicated that educators are willing to learn, however the parents as well should be taught about the importance of their involvement in their children’s education regardless of the hindering factors that hinders their involvement. It was then recommended that the Department of Basic Education should include in their plans building more special needs schools and also design more workshops for both parents and educators, which will help them develop necessary skills
Overlapping grid spectral collocation methods for solving unsteady MHD nanofluid flow over stretching surfaces = Izindlela eziwuxhaxha olulekanayo zemimo evame ukuhambisana zokuxazululwa kokugeleza koketshezi olusheshayo lwe-MHD ezindaweni ezindlalekile.
Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. This study comprehensively explores diverse magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) nanofluid flow phenomena over various stretching surfaces with distinctive physical and mathematical attributes. Firstly, we investigated the entropy generation of an unsteady MHD nanofluid flow over a porous inclined stretching surface, incorporating velocity slip and viscous dissipation. Then, the solution methodology utilizing spectral quasilinearization method (SQLM) on overlapping grids for analyzing electromagnetic MHD tangent hyperbolic nanofluid flow over an inclined stretchable Riga surface was considered. This study considers the Dufour effect, activation energy, and heat generation, enriching the understanding of complex fluid dynamics. Next, we explored the unsteady squeezing flow and heat transport involving silicon SiO2/kerosene oil nanofluid around radially stretchable parallel rotating disks. Particularly, the upper disk oscillates, adding an extra layer of dynamism to the system that develops a negative pressure situation, which has vast applications in modern-day engineering and medical sciences. Moving on, we employed the bivariate simple iteration method on overlapping grids to analyze unsteady ternary hybrid nanofluid flow with a magnetic dipole over an oscillatory stretching surface. This investigation offers insights into the intricate interplay of magnetic effects and oscillatory stretching, contributing to the broader field of magnetohydrodynamics. Lastly, the thesis explores the numerical analysis of unsteady Casson ternary hybrid nanofluid flow over a bidirectionally stretching sheet. This study incorporates motile gyrotactic microorganisms and nanoparticle shape factors. This collective body of work contributes to the fundamental understanding of nanofluid dynamics and showcases the versatility of numerical methods in solving complex fluid flow problems across diverse geometries. The findings presented in this thesis pave the way for future advancements in nanofluid research and hold significant implications for various engineering applications. Overall, the inclusion of overlapping grids in the regular SQLM, BSIM and BSQLM greatly improve their performances in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency, robustness, and ability to effectively tackle complex fluid flow problems.

Mortality rate in elderly patients over the age of sixty with a surgically treated hip fracture at a regional hospital in South Africa.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Hip fractures are prevalent and serious injuries among patients over the age of 60, representing a significant public health issue with substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In recent decades, there has been a notable increase in the incidence of hip fractures, reflecting demographic shifts and an aging population. While conservative treatment may be appropriate for incomplete fractures, surgical intervention is typically required to restore mobility and reduce complications. Research indicates that several factors significantly influence the mortality rate in patients with hip fractures. Advanced age, poor physical status, male gender, and delayed treatment have been identified as critical determinants of mortality. These patients often present with significant comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis, which complicate their overall health status and elevate the risk of pre-operative and post-operative complications. Consequently, the mortality rate for hip fractures is higher compared to other types of fractures. The mortality rate following hip fractures is not only a measure of the severity of the injury but also serves as a crucial metric for evaluating the quality of care provided by healthcare facilities. It reflects the effectiveness of medical interventions, surgical procedures, and post-operative care. High mortality rates may indicate deficiencies in healthcare delivery, while improvements in these rates can signify advancements in medical practice and patient management. Understanding and identifying risk factors for increased mortality is essential for developing targeted interventions and improving patient outcomes. Anticipating potential complications and implementing strategies to mitigate these risks can enhance the overall care of patients with hip fractures. Given the importance of this issue, this study aims to determine the one-year post-surgery mortality rate of patients with hip fractures and to identify the comorbidities associated with these patients. By analysing these factors, the study seeks to provide insights into the prognosis of hip fracture patients and to inform clinical practices and healthcare policies aimed at reducing mortality and improving the quality of care for this vulnerable population
COVID-19’s impact on the JSE-listed industry prices.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. This study aimed to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock prices of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the market efficiency within select industries listed on the JSE, employing the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) theory. The examination study focused on the period immediately following the announcement of lockdown measures, spanning 30 days. The fixed effect model was used to evaluate the relationship between JSE industry returns and independent variables such as COVID-19 metrics, Adjusted Share Price, and Exchange Rate over time. Further, the event study methodology was used to measure the abnormal returns on
stock prices 30 days up to 30 days after the lockdown announcement and hence the efficiency of the stock market during this time. Notably, the regression analysis underscored that while the exchange rate may not wield significant influence over financial returns, the number of COVID-19 cases appears to have a statistically significant positive impact on stock prices, emphasising the pervasive influence of the pandemic on market dynamics. The event study revealed that 62.5% of the selected JSE industries exhibited support for the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) theory. This suggests that a significant portion of the South African stock market demonstrates strong information efficiency. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring how the outbreak of pandemics has affected the general economy and the environment in which companies operate. Investors should be cautious during this time as there are additional risk factors such as national governments enforcing lockdown restrictions which
will limit company activities. Further, the study reveals that investors who are investing in the South African stock exchange should use investment strategies that are aligned with investing in weak-form efficient markets
Examining communication conflicts between females in eThekwini gendered organisations as a long-term result of feminist resistance: a correlative, mixed method.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Female oppression has been a component of injustice in society for centuries, dynamically moulding for each place in which it occurs, evolving despite movements challenging it. Despite feminist movements throughout history challenging all facets of female oppression in the
social, legal, economic and political spheres, female oppression continues to be seen and experienced in the economic sphere. Females continue to experience oppressive challenges in the workplace such as unequal pay, harassment, glass ceilings, targeted conflict, and more.
Over time, females have learned to resist and challenge this oppression through the form of feminist resistance. However, research shows that this feminist resistance could be leading to further oppressive occurrences such as the increased female adoption of masculine agentic communication traits, and the occurrence conflict with fellow female colleagues. This study aims to address these three phenomena to investigate if there is correlation between the female use of feminist resistance in gendered organisations, the female adoption of masculine communication traits, and the occurrence of female same-sex conflicts in the eThekwini workplace. Through a critical realist approach, this study employed a mixed method
questionnaire, as well as descriptive statistics, qualitative descriptive coding, and inferential statistics to analyse the three phenomena. The results found that females in oppressive, gendered workplaces in eThekwini were employing feminist resistance and that those females
were engaging in more female same-sex conflicts of a ‘Queen Bee’ nature. However, the findings did not show that females in those same environments were increasingly adoption masculine communication traits. As such, the results show that there is correlation between
the female use of feminist resistance and the occurrence of female same-sex conflicts in gendered, eThekwini workplaces
The role of traditional leadership in local economic development of UMsinga Community, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. This research focused on the role of traditional leaders in Local Economic Development (LED) in UMsinga. The study sought to understand the nature of the role of traditional leaders on LED and motivations for playing such role as well as the way this role is understood and experienced by selected participants in these contexts. Understanding the role of traditional leaders in local economic development will lead to a better understanding of how such leaders can influence local economic growth. Although traditional leaders are appointed through heritage and only recently have started to be regulated by policy, they remain important structures leading rural communities. Therefore, it is crucial to explore their impact on local economic development and the implications for communities. Many communities have leadership structures and unique socio-cultural characteristics that must be studied to fully recognize the various types of leadership roles that exist in society.
This research is underpinned by the following theories: Complexity Leadership Theory, Asset-Based Community development, Integrated Community Development, and Sustainable Livelihoods Approach. The study analyses the function of traditional leadership in local economic development using qualitative research methodology. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with municipal officials of Local Economic Development. members of the traditional council, and traditional leaders. The data was analysed using thematic content analysis. The themes that facilitated LED in the community included 1) Traditional leaders play a significant role in shaping LED; 2) Traditional leaders in UMsinga are motivated to develop their community and, 3) The role of traditional leaders in UMsinga is associated with their vast knowledge about their communities and their ownership of land. The themes that emerged as barriers included: 4) The gap between the two governing structures in the UMsinga community. Furthermore, 5) there is a need for frequent training to enhance skills. This research recommended strategies that could be utilized to further coordinate the governing structures in UMsinga
Parent governors’ experiences of financial management at Umbumbulu District.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 requires School Governing Bodies (SGBs) to take responsibility for the management of school finances. However, research has revealed that many SGB members in South African schools lack the necessary knowledge and financial skills to manage the school’s finances effectively and efficiently. This qualitative case study explored the experiences of primary school parent governors in financial management in Umlazi District within the Umbumbulu Circuit. The study was conducted within the interpretivist paradigm and underpinned by participatory democracy theory. Data were gathered using semi-structured interviews with three participants who were purposefully selected from three primary schools in the Umbumbulu district. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse data. Findings reveal that the finance committees lack the necessary training that helps with an understanding of their roles and responsibilities in financial management; thus, support should be provided in ensuring that they understand their duties. It is therefore recommended that the Department of Education and other relevant educational
authorities provide the necessary training and support to SGB members in schools to enhance their financial knowledge and skills. This can be done through workshops, seminars, and policy training programmes specifically designed to meet the needs of parent governors in financial
management. Furthermore, the government should allocate sufficient funds to assist schools in
improving their financial systems, including providing resources and tools for effective
financial management
The integration and alignment of graduate attributes with the industry advisory bodies’ requirements in the Human Resource Management diploma.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Graduate attributes have become increasingly important in South African Higher Education (HE) as universities strive to produce employable graduates who add value once they are employed This study aimed to examine the integration of graduate attributes into the curriculum using a single case study of a Diploma in Human Resource Management (HRM) and the extent to which these attributes align with Industry Advisory Body (IAB) requirements. Undertaken at a University of Technology (UoT) that offers career-orientated programmes, the study further sought to determine whether or not the curriculum prepares employable graduates for the world of work. Designing and implementing an industry-responsive curriculum
requires collaboration with industry advisory bodies and professionals. Industry bodies provide academic departments with meaningful inputs and feedback on curriculum development concerning industry graduate attributes and programme quality, thus strengthening programmes, enhancing programme quality and shaping course content. In HRM, such industry bodies also undergird the conceptualisation of graduate attributes. Integrating graduate attributes into the curriculum appears not straightforward and is not always clearly understood. A qualitative research approach was adopted, underpinned by an interpretive philosophical stance. Through the purposive sampling technique, a sample of six lecturers with a combined HR teaching experience of over 30 years were selected and interviewed. Data generated from the interviews were transcribed and analysed through Atlas.ti, thus generating codes and themes. The findings were interpreted and explained according to Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) dimensions, which led to a proposed systems approach of embedding graduate attributes into the selected curriculum. The findings revealed that a high degree of HRM diploma graduate attributes are aligned to industry and that integrating graduate attributes into the curriculum is a
multifaceted approach involving several stakeholders. The study recommends that departments in UoTs should foster and cultivate strong and sustainable relationships with industry to ensure that beyond the curriculum alignment, students and graduates are also provided with opportunities for applied learning
