The Bridge, The Nation State and Shape Shifting Modernity
Before and during the building period of the Öresund bridge in the late 1990´s, the diminished importance of nation-states was predicted. A new Europe of the border regions would emerge and more and more decision-making would take place at a supranational EU or regional level. The new transnational Öresund connection would, both symbolically and practically, be at the forefront of this development and be a growth engine for the entire new border region. An important element in the marketing and identity building around the new region was the highlighting of a special form of Scandinavian state-led modernity in the region with an emphasis on high quality of life, open and democratic societies, with egalitarian ideals and with rationality as a guiding light. At the same time, this promotion was also aimed at international capital markets with an emphasis on high technological know-how and peaceful labor markets. However, what was already clear during the bridge-building period was that the nation-states were not as weak as a certain form of rhetoric suggested. National differences in the perception of how the rational, modern society should be organized became clear when national regulations were to be adapted through regional construction. The development since then with the refugee crisis in 2015, the introduction of border controls in Europe and the region shows that the national modernity projects have changed shape. Development of machine for applying self-adhesivefoam sealing strips to filter panels
The work is being carried out in collaboration with Hydrotech – VeoliaWater Technologies AB in Vellinge. The production speed of Hydrotech’sALPHAFLEX™ filter panels is being increased. To achieve this, a prototypeis being constructed that automates the otherwise slow and monotonousprocess where foam sealing strips are manually applied to the long sides ofthe filter panels. A complete mechanical solution is being developed usingthe CAD program SolidWorks. The construction is designed with strength,assembly and integration with the other parts of the machine in mind.The model is built up of several interacting components that enable thesealing strips to be placed and fixed exactly in the right position duringoperation. Load analyses are being carried out using the finite elementmethod (FEM) to ensure that the construction can withstand the forcesthat may arise. A manufacturing-ready solution with associated drawingsand specified material choices is presented. The construction is made easyto assemble, robust for continuous operation and adapted to the machine’sexisting components. It is shown how engineering methodology is used tosolve practical problems in mechanical engineering product development.Arbetet genomförs i samarbete med Hydrotech – Veolia Water TechnologiesAB i Vellinge. Konstruktionen görs enkelatt montera, robust för kontinuerlig drift och anpassad till maskinens befintligakomponenter. Det visas hur ingenjörsmässig metodik används föratt lösa praktiska problem inom maskinteknisk produktutveckling
Mathematics Anxiety Among Students from the Teacher’s Perspective: : A Qualitative Study of Four Mathematics Teachers’ Experiences of How Students’ Math Anxiety Affects Their Teaching
ABSTRAKT Matematikängslan, alltså oro och stress som reducerar möjligheterna att klara av matematiska uppgifter och försvårar matematikinlärning, förekommer i stort i varje vanlig skolklass. Som matematiklärare måste man vara förberedd på att behöva hantera den här utmaningen ett flertal gånger under loppet av ett mångårigt yrkesliv. Syftet med den här studien var att ta reda på hur några matematiklärare i årskurserna 4-6 upplevde förekomsten av matematikängslan i sina elevgrupper. Det handlade i första hand om att ta reda på hur de upplevde att elevernas matematikängslan tog sig uttryck, ifall och i så fall hur den påverkade deras arbete samt i vilken utsträckning de ansåg att de förberetts för den här specifika utmaningen genom utbildning eller skolutvecklingsprojekt. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten var att matematikängslan är multidimensionell till sin karaktär och att den följaktligen visar sig på olika sätt hos olika elever och varierar i både styrka och uppträdande beroende på situation. Studiens metod var kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra yrkesverksamma matematiklärare i årskurserna 4-6. Det visade sig att alla fyra respondenterna redan råkat på fenomenet hos ett flertal elever trots att ingen av dem befunnit sig tio år i yrket. Deras upplevelse var att matematikängslan manifesterade sig på olika sätt hos olika individer och i olika situationer. Vidare upplevde de att förekomsten av den försvårade planeringen, utformningen och genomförandet av undervisningen. Ingen av dem ansåg att de tilldelats adekvata verktyg för att hantera den utmaning som detta innebar. Avslutningsvis var det tydligt att detta är ett område som tål att studeras mer, särskilt ur ett lärarperspektiv, möjligen utifrån en mer omfattande deltagarpool och med ännu starkare fokus på lärarnas egna strategier för att hantera och avhjälpa elevernas matematikängslan.

I takt med att svenska städer förtätas ökar trycket på grönytor. Samtidigt saknas det kunskap om hur unga vuxna värderar grönområden nära bostäder, samt hur deras perspektiv kan bidra till framtidens hållbara stadsutveckling. Denna studie undersöker unga vuxnas upplevelser, attityder och preferenser kring bostadsnära grönområden, och hur dessa kan integreras i stadsplaneringen. Genom en enkätundersökning riktad till personer i åldern 20–40 år, belyses hur unga vuxna uppfattar betydelsen av grönområden nära bostaden, hur deras engagemang kan inkluderas i Sveriges stadsplanering samt vilka strategier andra länder kan bidra med för att möta dessa preferenser. Slutsatsen är att unga vuxna värderar grönområden högt, men att det inte är enbart närhet som avgör deras betydelse – trygghet, tillgänglighet, underhåll och estetik är avgörande faktorer. Grönområden betraktas som ett önskat inslag vid bostadsval, snarare än ett avgörande kriterium. Dessutom visar resultaten att det finns ett intresse bland unga vuxna att engagera sig i utvecklingen och förvaltningen av gröna ytor, vilket pekar på vikten av att inkludera medborgare i hela planeringsprocessen. Detta bekräftar teorin om co-initiation som en central strategi för hållbar stadsutveckling. Genom att inkludera unga vuxna i planeringsprocessen kan svenska städer utvecklas mot ökad ekologisk och social hållbarhet. För att möta unga vuxnas behov och skapa fungerande gröna miljöer krävs därför en kombination av tekniska innovationer och demokratiska processer

Abstract: This study is mainly aimed at examining the experience of a group of Syrian refugees in higher education in Sweden. It focuses on the gap in the existing studies and literature to shed light on the importance of the practical part in the learning environment. It addresses the pedagogical strategies, students' inclusion in class, assessment methods, and communication with teachers and peers. It also examines the aspirations and attitudes of a group of Syrian refugees toward their higher education in Sweden. The research design adopted in this study is quantitative, and the data was collected over a short period using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. The questionnaire includes 50 questions adopting a multiple-choice design, and an open-ended question was added at the end to allow participants to add anything they want concerning their higher education journey. A group of 76 refugee participants were included in this study, which can be considered a larger sample in comparison to previous qualitative studies. The findings show that the experience of this group was satisfactory; however, a significant number of students stated that they faced difficulties concerning the tight timeframe and language barriers. The majority of participants did not suffer from discrimination, but a considerable number did. These challenges and difficulties did not prevent them from being successful and maintaining a positive attitude, which shows a high level of self-efficacy. The study considers the importance of the participants' backgrounds and the cultural differences necessary to maintain a constructivist, supportive learning environment for refugees
The narratives of Polish immigrant women in the United States
This thesis explores the personal diaries of Polish women migrants who emigrated to the United States during the first wave of migration, focusing on how gender, class, and national identity intersect in their self-narratives. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including subalternity theory (Spivak), representation theory (Hall), and collective memory studies, the research examines five female-authored diaries published in the 1977 volumes Migrant Diaries. Through qualitative narrative analysis, these personal accounts are treated as both historical documents and acts of resistance, shedding light on marginalized voices historically excluded from dominant migration and feminist discourses
Sensor Localization in Digital-Twin Representations using Mixed Reality and IoT for Smart Buildings
Smart buildings equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors have significant potential for optimizing energy use, enhancing safety, and improving occupant comfort. However, their effectiveness is fundamentally limited by the challenge of accurately localizing sensors within the physical environment. Without precise spatial context, smart building systems cannot make informed decisions or provide reliable environmental monitoring. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a novel indoor localization and visualization system that integrates Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based Angle of Arrival (AoA) positioning with extended reality (XR) platforms. This research addresses the challenge of accurate tracking of IoT sensors indoors, where traditional Global Positioning System (GPS) is ineffective, and camera-based solutions face limitations such as occlusion and lighting sensitivity. The proposed system leverages the u-blox XPLR-AOA-3 evaluation kit in combination with Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) for enhanced spatial awareness. BLE tags, placed on objects, transmit signals to anchor devices strategically positioned in various configurations. These anchors compute the AoA, enabling 3D position estimation. Data is streamed to a Unity-based 3D environment, synchronized via TCP/UDP communication protocol, and visualized on Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap 2 headsets. Experiments were conducted in two distinct indoor environments, employing multiple anchor geometries, tag heights, and static and dynamic tag scenarios over 24 trials. Results demonstrated sub-meter (< 1 m) accuracy under controlled conditions, with performance influenced by room size, anchor placement, tag height, and environmental factors. The study also identified practical challenges, including system efficiency and limited flexibility due to the reliance on wired connections. Local network restrictions drove this choice, as the UDP-based wireless option could not be made to function reliably in the available network environment. In addition, the environmental sensor data (temperature, humidity, pressure) was reused from a previous project and integrated into the Unity application to provide contextual overlays, while all localization accuracy results (RMSE, stability) were produced using newly collected BLE–AoA position data. This research contributes a practical framework for accurate indoor sensor positioning that bridges the gap between physical IoT deployments and their digital representations. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of BLE-AoA localization for smart building applications and provide insights into optimal deployment strategies for real-world implementations. This approach of radio-based localization with immersive visualization establishes a foundation for more intelligent and spatially aware building management systems.
The Internet’s New Boyfriend : A Social-Semiotic Analysis of Participatory Activism and Irony in Luigi Mangione Memes
This thesis investigates the meme discourse surrounding Luigi Mangione as a case study of digital activism and countercultural expression in online spaces. Luigi Mangione was accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the 4th of December 2024. His reasons for the alleged deed were to commit an act of protest against the privatized healthcare system in the United States. As a result, online users with various backgrounds produced a multitude of memes that were critically received by mainstream media. This research aims to explore how these memes use multimodal strategies, such as irony, visuals, and intertextual references, to convey messages quickly and to build in-group identity among participants. It also considers how the technical infrastructures of digital platforms shape the way these memes are created and interpreted. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as refracted publics (Abidin, 2021; boyd 2010), affective publics (Papacharissi, 2015), and critiques of platform capitalism (Fuchs, 2021; Fisher, 2015), the research examines how meme creators mobilize ambiguity to construct counter-discourses below the radar of mainstream visibility. Utilizing Poulsen & Kvåle’s seven-dimensional methodological social semiotic framework on a sample of 20 memes sourced from X, the analysis reveals how Luigi Mangione memes operate across multiple layers as fandom and as an ironic resistance to institutional authority. The findings suggest that Luigi Mangione memes function as subtle activism and show cross-class solidarity. Possible areas for further inquiry can be how race, youth, and good looks contributed to the widespread support Luigi Mangione received. By researching audience reception across different demographics and platforms, understanding of the impact of meme culture can be deepened
(Bio)fueling dispossession? : The implications of the Renewable Energy Directive for dispossesion in countries of biofuel origin
This thesis investigates the trajectory of the emerging transnational biofuel governance legal order influenced by the EU’S Renewable Energy Directive (RED). It seeks to understand its implications on dispossession in countries of biofuel origin, and relation to domestic legislations, to assess whether it addresses the regime towards social justice. Through qualitative critical discourse analysis conducted through Discursive Nodal Points, this study specifically focuses on the impact of RED on dispossession in Brazil as the EU’s leading bioethanol export country. The study employs postcolonial and poststructuralist lenses, to better acknowledge perspectives of dispossession from the affected actors. The findings reveal that the RED oscillates between promotion and legitimization of dispossession, and it does not bring substantial improvements to national standards.The thesis concludes that, as for now, the RED is not directing biofuel governance towards a socially positive direction. It also notes that Bonsucro, RED’s certification adopted in Brazil, demonstrates instead potential for inspiring change in the area

It highlights how space applications, such as Earth observation, navigation, and telecommunications, can be integrated with terrestrial systems to provide solutions for remote sensing, disaster management and climate monitoring. The policy brief emphasizes the importance of space-derived data in tracking and promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDGs 3, 5, 8, 14, and 17. It discusses how space technologies can contribute to good health and well-being, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, life below water, and partnerships for the goals. The policy brief identifies a need for strategic alliances between stakeholders to enhance the use of space-derived data for sustainable development and to support the broader objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
