This study explores professional real estate agents' attitudes towards the further implementation of AI and machine learning in the property valuation process, as well as how they wish and predict the process could evolve in the future. The study focuses on examining the differences between agents working in urban environments versus those in rural areas.  Through semi-structured interviews with individuals who work daily with residential property valuations, regional differences have been highlighted and preferences collected. The study shows that those operating in rural areas often collaborate with colleagues during valuations and share knowledge and expertise, while those working in urban settings tend to rely more heavily on available statistical data. Furthermore, the study highlights the respondents believe the valuation process can be further developed with the help of AI, though to varying degrees. In urban areas, many are positive and open about allowing a more advanced AI model to take a greater role in valuations, whereas rural agents mainly see AI as a complementary tool that can be developed further to improve the comparability of properties.

This project is grounded in user-centered design, with a focus on understanding users’ needs to create inclusive and functional solutions (Boeijen et al., 2017). Research through design is used as a method, meaning that the design process and research evolve in parallel and inform one another (Koskinen et al., 2008). In the field of special education, it is emphasized that the school environment should be adapted to the needs of the students—not the other way around (Skolverket, 2024). Valsö (2019) highlights the importance of reducing sensory input in classrooms to support concentration, especially for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Research by Zentall and Javorsky (1995) shows that tactile and motor stimulation can enhance attention in children with ADHD. By integrating these insights into the design of a school chair, a more accessible and calming learning environment can be created for all children

When garments begin to speak : A design study on the emotional bonds between humans and garments and how they influence our clothing consumption

This study explores how emotional durable design can contribute to changing our perception of garments that are no longer used for aesthetic reasons, with the aim of extending their lifespan and reducing textile waste. The background of the thesis is sustainable development, and examining our textile waste is particularly relevant due to new EU directives on textile waste. The study is based on the theories of emotional durable design, storytelling, poetics of waste, and DIY (which stands for ‘do-it-your-self’) to explore how stronger bonds can be created between people and garments. The study is based on qualitative user interviews, which formed the foundation for ideation, sketches, and prototypes. The research question is; ‘How can emotional design contribute to changing the perception of discarded garments and encourage their reuse?’, and the questionis addressed through a design proposal in the form of a room divider intended for use in the home environment. This room divider is designed for clothing that is no longer worn, which are woven into and displayed on the divider. The user also prints fabric tags with stories explaining why the garment ended up on the divider, with the intention of creating an understanding of, and relationship with, the garment. These tags are sewn onto the garments and serve as reminders of their history and potential. The room divider makes our textile waste visible and creates space to re-evaluate what is discarded and what still holds value. The study shows that exposure, in combination with personal involvement, can increase a garment’s emotional value and thereby extend its period of use. The design contribution is a concrete solution with the potential to support more sustainable clothing consumption, and the knowledge contribution lies in how emotional design can be applied to change behaviors related to textile waste

From Federal Reliance to Community Resilience : The Role of Mutual Aid & Empowerment Using Online & Social Media

    No full text
With the United States recent change in government creating less reliance on federal aid during natural disaster and crisis, and more reliance on communities to help themselves, it is more important than ever to understand the effectiveness of mutual aid. Using a networked content analysis and comparative analysis, this thesis looks at online and social media as an effective strategy to increase a sense of empowerment, participatory communication, and various ways in which it can be used, asking how mutual aid groups empower participatory development using social media, while also analyzing how social media has changed over time. Looking at 3 different mutual aid group’s websites, social media, and related literature, we gain a better understanding of how mutual aid groups empower participatory development using online and social media. Depending on the goal of the mutual aid group, we see that different forms of online media work best for that particular group, with websites being the most effective for advocating for change, while social media is often the better method for engaging with community to provide direct and immediate aid. This thesis demonstrates the effectiveness and importance of mutual aid for long-term reliance and decreased reliance on government or traditional aid
