Methods and Strategies for Enhancing Reading Comprehension in Secondary and Upper-Secondary School Students with Autism A Systematic Literature Review
Sammanfattning/Abstract Bengtsson, A. och Jörneklint Bergquist, J. (2025).
Baa Baa Black Sheep : Treatment of Words for Animal Sounds in Two Online English Dictionaries
The paper examines the entries of 36 words for common animal sounds in two online English dictionaries, Cambridge Dictionaries and The Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, to see what information is provided in the entries. Previous work on English dictionaries has focused on meaning explanations of referential, arbitrary words. With the examination of onomatopoeic words for animal sounds, this paper expands the field beyond the study of arbitrary words and into words whose forms contribute to their meaning. The results show that there are no consistent policies for how words for animal sounds are handled, or how the animal readings are separated from other possible meanings of the words. There is variation in how explicitly the animals are mentioned in the definitions of meaning, and if they are in fact mentioned at all. The entries for the verb and noun uses of the words may not contain the same information. The examples, in cases where the animal readings are exemplified at all, may come in a different entry from where the relevant definition of meaning is provided. One of the dictionaries also relies heavily on definitions where the word’s meaning is explained in terms of itself. The use of synonyms in the meaning explanations of onomatopoeic words is also found to be problematic. As these words do not merely identify a referent, but describe or imitate what the referent sounds like, exchanging one word for another does not carry over the same imagery of sound
Computational Phenotyping of Obstructive Airway Diseases : A Systematic Review
Introduction: Computational sciences have significantly contributed to characterizing airway disease phenotypes, complementing medical expertise. However, comparing studies that derive phenotypes is challenging due to varying decisions made during phenotyping. We conducted a systematic review to describe studies that utilized unsupervised computational approaches for phenotyping obstructive airway diseases in children and adults. Methods: We searched for relevant papers published between 2010 and 2020 in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Additional sources included conference proceedings, reference lists, and expert recommendations. Two reviewers independently screened studies for eligibility, extracted data, and assessed study quality. Disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. An in-house quality appraisal tool was used. Evidence was synthesized, focusing on populations, variables, and computational approaches used for deriving phenotypes. Results: Of 120 studies included in the review, 60 focused on asthma, 19 on severe asthma, 28 on COPD, 4 on asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), and 9 on rhinitis. Among asthma studies, 31 focused on adults and 9 on children, with phenotypes related to atopy, age at onset, and disease severity. Severe asthma phenotypes were characterized by symptomatology, atopy, and age at onset. COPD phenotypes involved lung function, emphysematous changes, smoking, comorbidities, and daily life impairment. ACO and rhinitis phenotypes were mostly defined by symptoms, lung function, and sensitization, respectively. Most studies used hierarchical clustering, with some employing latent class modeling, mixture models, and factor analysis. The comprehensiveness of variable reporting was the best quality indicator, while reproducibility measures were often lacking. Conclusion: Variations in phenotyping methods, study settings, participant profiles, and variables contribute to significant differences in characterizing asthma, severe asthma, COPD, ACO, and rhinitis phenotypes across studies. Lack of reproducibility measures limits the evaluation of computational phenotyping in airway diseases, underscoring the need for consistent approaches to defining outcomes and selecting variables to ensure reliable phenotyping
Atomistic assessment of interfacial interaction potential in tungsten twist grain boundaries
The present study focuses on the computation of interfacial excess potential for the cohesive zones through which a brittle crack propagates in tungsten (W) twist grain boundaries (TGBs). Additionally, the influence of phosphorus (P) impurities is investigated. To this end, we have performed classical atomistic modeling of several ⟨110⟩ TGBs in their pristine and P-impurity segregated states. The modeling entails a mode-I stress intensity factor () controlled quasi-static loading setup, in which the cohesive zone is divided into small cohesive zone volume elements (CZVEs) that enable the measurement of the scale-independent interfacial excess energy potential associated with cleavage surfaces. The study shows that the cracks in all pristine TGBs exhibit brittle failure by advancing along the GB interface. The same fracture mechanism is also observed upon the introduction of P impurities. However, debris in the form of clustered W-P agglomerates is occasionally observed on the cleavage surfaces. As for the measured excess interface energy potential, it is independent of the height chosen for the CZVEs and their position relative to the initial crack tip. This makes it useful to quantify the P induced embrittlement of TGBs and for up-scaling the results for e.g. meso-scale continuum modeling. The presence of P impurities reduces the interfacial binding energy and the associated peak stress, which is an indication of GB embrittlement. These results are in line with the experimentally observed P induced GB embrittlement in W, previously reported in the literature
Extra Adjustments: An Inclusive Practice? : A Phenomenographic Study on Teachers´, Special Educators´ and School Leaders´ Perceptions of Inclusive Extra Adjustments
Studiens empiri samlades in via semistrukturerade kvalitativa intervjuer.
Towards more Credible Agent-Based Models for Policy Support
Agent-Based Social Simulation (ABSS), i.e., the study of social systems through Agent-Based Modeling, has great potential in serving as policy support. However, challenges in the modeling for policymaking process prevent this potential to be fully realized. For instance, the models might not be deemed sufficiently credible or appealing to decisionmakers. This licentiate thesis aims to contribute to the understand of these challenges, and to identify challenges and opportunities in how to increase the credibility of ABSS models in policymaking. First, we investigate the modeling of human behavior and what challenges there are that may affect models’ suitability for policymaking. Properly representing individuals’ decision-making can serve to increase model accuracy, model descriptiveness and recognizability of the modeled system, which in turn can increase model credibility. Taking models of the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, we performed reviews that analyzed what aspects of human behavior were modeled, and how these aspects relate to what conclusions can be drawn from the model. The studies found that many of the aspects that seem relevant were rarely included in the studied models. Three challenges were identified with regards to being able to build more descriptive behavior models within the time constraints posed by decision-makers: improvements to modeling tools and software, model reuse, and data availability. Second, we look at the verification and validation (V&V) of ABSS models. The proper evaluation of models is crucial for model credibility to be ensured. In the study of COVID-19 models, V&V activities were found to be rarely documented (if performed at all). To this end, we suggest the continuous use of a ”V&V plan” during the modeling process, and proposes an accreditation framework for institutions to be able to perform external validation. Third, we consider the combination of models and model results. Model combination can lead to more credible models as it allows modelers to use well-established, well validated models to represent parts of a system, while combined simulation results often are more robust than those of a single model. A literature survey was performed, identifying six different types of combinations: Ensemble Modeling, Meta Analysis, Model Merging, Models as Modules, Model Integration and Model Chaining. For each type, we identified purpose and examples, as well as existing challenges for the combination of both simulation models in general and ABSS models in particular.Paper IV in dissertation as manuscript and not part of the fulltext online.</p
Diabetes type 2-patients' experiences of diabetes-related complications : A literature review
Kategorierna delades vidare upp i tolv subkategorier. Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a chronic and progressive disease that is defined by chronic hyperglycemia. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide and is estimated to affect 1 of 8 adults by the year 2045. Cardiovascular complications related to DMT2 are caused by elevated plasma glucose and risk factors related to the metabolic syndrome. Cardiovascular complications affect the cardiovascular system and can lead to reduced physical- and psychological quality of life and also premature death. Recently graduated nurses have a need for understanding DMT2-patients’ experiences of diabetes-related complications in order to perform safe care and individualized nursing care. Orlando's nursing theory has been used to highlight the dynamic relationship between nurse and patient. Aim: To illustrate diabetes type 2-patients’ experiences of diabetes-related complications. Method: The study is a literature review with a qualitative analysis method. The database search was conducted in Cinahl and PubMed and resulted in 326 articles. After the quality review, thirteen articles with a qualitative study design answered the aim of the study and proceeded to the analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in four categories: experiences of risk and complications, experiences of limitations, experiences of motivation and priorities and experiences of health care. The categories were further divided into twelve subcategories. Conclusion: DMT2-patients’ experiences of diabetes-related complications are complex and influenced by several factors. The main experiences were feelings of fear and hopelessness, experiences of reduced physical- and psychological quality of life, lack of trust for healthcare and a lack of understanding of cardiovascular complications. The results indicated the importance of the nurse involving the patient in the nursing process to increase the patient’s motivation and participation and to ensure that the patient understands the given information.
