Memory in the Cloud : Digital Ethnography and the Evolving Preservation of Collective Memory in Rural Vinnytsia oblast
This master’s thesis explores how digitization contributes to preserving collective memory and supports the reconstruction of village appearances. Using Vinnytsia Oblast as a case study, the research investigates how digital methods can document rural settlements' current state and act as a vessel for collective memory. The study is grounded in digital ethnography and draws on Maurice Halbwachs’ theory of collective memory, supported by interviews with three experts from Ukraine. The discoveries underline the role of digitization in capturing and transmitting memory while reinforcing the authenticity of village identities in Vinnytsia Oblast. The master's thesis shows that digital preservation offers numbers of benefits, however, concerns remain about the possible distortion of digitally preserved data and its long-term availability, which can affect authenticity and collective memory. The study highlights several key findings:the built environment reflects collective memory; in the digital age, individual memories can become part of a shared memory which challenge Halbwachs’s theory; and points to the need for strategies to manage and preserve digital data.
Sensor-Based Safety Monitoring : A Path Toward Early Detection of UnusualMovement Patterns in Older Adults
Sweden’s population is aging, and while 65 000 people over 65 receive a personal safety alarm each year, wrist-button devices rely on active presses, cameras feel intrusive, and GPS trackers can restrict freedom of movement. There is therefore a clear need for alarms that safeguard both independence and privacy. This study presents a camera-free safety system in which five ultrasonic sensors (HC-SR04) mounted in doorways transmit distance readings over a Wi-Fi mesh network to a central ESP32. All analysis including sensor fusion, first-order Markov chains and z-score analysis runs locally, so no personal data ever leave the home. The model was trained on ten days of normal activity recorded in a real house, generating baseline matrices for both transition sequences and dwell times based on transition sequence, number of visits, duration of single visits and total time per room. It was then tested over a twenty-day period, with ten days containing deliberate deviations and ten following normal routines. All days were correctly classified, demonstrating the model’s ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal behavior patterns. These results show that a handful of doorway sensors can provide early warnings of altered daily patterns, enhancing safety without requiring the older resident to wear or operate anything.

Between Habitus and Integration : The Role of the Colombian Embassy in Denmark in the Migratory Experience of Colombians
When I visited Colombia a year ago, I remembered all the differences and gaps between our social classes - and this shook my concerns as both student and researcher. I wanted to understand if these inequities or disproportionate privileges, depending on where we're born in Colombia, still manifest when we leave the country. That's why I chose to speak primarily from a Bourdieusian perspective about the cultural capital we carry as Colombians, and how it must hybridize if we want to fully immerse ourselves in a new society with structures that are foreign to us. I sought to understand how, in a country as geographically and culturally distant as Denmark, we must confront everything we grew up knowing and adapt to new ways of understanding the world - while understanding that the world now sees us differently. I wanted to grasp how it feels to stop being defined by a social stratum and become defined by our passport instead. Similarly, I wanted to comprehend whether that Colombian state - which sometimes privileges some and makes others invisible - acts similarly toward those of us who no longer live in the coffee country, and whether we as Colombians - both state and people - can create more inclusive communities that don't just reinforce our Colombian identity but also support us without distinctions of social class, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation or race. Because in the end, we all still feel as Colombian as a six o'clock morning coffee in Cocora Valley
The Human Side of Sustainability: What Specialists Reveal About Culture, Meaning, and Motivation
This thesis explores how sustainability specialists make sense of sustainability and its role in their work. It also seeks to understand how sustainability specialists are motivated and engaged in their work, having the aspect whether these insights could be relevant for other employees. This research is grounded in the theories firstly presenting organisational culture where the adaptation of socialization being ongoing is suggested. Second theory, sensemaking, is focusing on the language and culture as the shapers of how sustainability is understood. Furthermore, engagement and motivation are explored to seek the keys to motivate and engage employees overall to sustainability in the organisation. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted to gather rich data for empirical research. The data was analysed with thematic analysis with a deductive approach. Social constructivism gave the frame to explore the individual experiences of sustainability specialists. Lifelong commitment towards sustainability, gaps between actions and communication, reactive behavior of organizations among the other interesting findings are addressed in the key findings. The study suggests that sustainability efforts should become accessible norms and language to be employed by all employees, not only sustainability specialists. organisations which are prioritizing cultural integration and personal relevance strengthens engagement and motivation towards sustainability. The discoveries of the research are versatile and some of the patterns need further research
Future expectations for the Fehmarn Belt - stakeholders’ perspectives on Skåne’s logistics and infrastructure
The Fehmarn Belt connection between Denmark and Germany is one of Europe's biggest infrastructure projects and is still under construction and is expected to reshape freight transport across Northern Europe. This mega project brings both opportunities and challenges for Skånes future in freight transport. This thesis looks at how the Skåne region might transition from a logistical bottleneck to a vital hub for sustainable freight transports. Through qualitative interviews with key industry stakeholders, an in- depth review of regional infrastructure and policy, this study emphasizes the urgent need for railroad investments, improved terminals and long-term planning. Although the Fehmarn Belt connection holds the potential to elevate Skåne within the European transport market, the outcome will depend on how the region responds to this challenge. The study also investigates the extent to which businesses are preparing for these big shifts, offering insights into the regional implications of transformative infrastructure projects
Patient perspective on aesthetics and communication in dental prosthetic treatment: A Pilot Study
Aim: The aim of the study was to examine patient’s satisfaction with the aesthetics of their dental prosthetics, as well as their perspective on how well they could communicate their aesthetic wants and wishes to the dental student. Material and method: A survey was conducted with patients at the end of their prosthetic treatment at the Student Clinic of Malmö university’s Faculty of Odontology. The survey consisted of OHIP-5 (Oral Health Impact Profile), OES (Oral Eesthetic Scale) as well as questions regarding the esthetics of the restoration as well as communication between patient and dental student. 18 surveys were filled out and analyzed. Result: The majority of the patients were satisfied with both the aesthetic of their dental prostheses, as well as the communication between themselves and their dental student. The most important objective for most patients was to better their masticatory abilities. This was true regardless of if the prosthetic was fixed or removable. No discernable differences between genders could be found. Conclusion: The patient-dental student communication was largely satisfactory. Their aesthetic wishes for their prosthetics were met, and their overall experience with their dental student was a positive one. The sample size for the study is however small, and more studies are needed in the field to reach a more solid conclusion
A Decent Sailor's Life : Criminal Sailors and Their Representation in Swedish Newspapers, 1850–1914
There is a common stereotype about sailors in which they are viewed as particularly prone to drunkenness and fighting by the general public. However, previous researchers have suggested that violence is in fact a common trait for working-class cultures in general, due to masculine ideals and men's propensity for violence. According to these studies, sailors do not differ from any other working-class occupational group in history in that regard. Although the previous studies about sailor violence and criminality have primarily been in a British context, there are few studies on Swedish sailors. Therefore, this essay have studied crimes among sailors that resulted in prison sentences between 1850 and 1914, a previously unstudied time frame regarding sailor criminality. Using a source material of index cards for released convicts, the statistical data on sailors' crimes shows that economic crimes, specifically theft, were the most common crime among sailors. Violent crimes, on the other hand, were fewer in number. As such, the results contradict the sailor stereotype, in which the majority of crimes would have included drunkenness and violence, thus begging the question of where the stereotype comes from. Given that Swedish newspapers were one of the primary channels of information at the time, as they controlled the means of publishing resources, and in theory, as suggested by Richard Johnson and Graham Dawson, they could therefore convey misleading perceptions of history. As previous research by Brad Beaven has also shown, this was actually the case in Britain during the same time period, in which London's sailor town district, Ratcliffe Highway, became a murderous abyss in the newspapers' representation. Thus, the main aim of this paper has been to study how the criminal sailors identified in the previous study are portrayed in Swedish newspapers during the period in question, to see if they have similar tendencies to those found in the British newspapers and if they produce stereotypes of sailors. With the use of a text analysis, with a rhetorical orientation revolving around the implicated meanings of the paper's connotations, and with a theoretical framework centered around the concept of representation and the terms stereotyping and classification, this essay has been able to conclude that the Swedish newspapers do not produce stereotypes about sailors, nor make comprehensive associations to known sailor stereotypes. Hence, the production of sailor stereotypes must come from elsewhere. Although the newspapers' forms of stereotyping and classification do not target sailors per se, they still reveal layers of class oppression against those with lower social status
Ego-Politics in International Relations. : How Does Ego-Political Leadership Threaten Multilateralism in the Foreign Policy of Donald Trump and Viktor Orban?
The objective of this thesis is to investigate how the phenomenon of ego-politics threatens multilateralism in the field of International Relations, specifically in the foreign policy of Donald Trump and Viktor Orban. In this research, ego-politics is conceptualized under classical realism as a style of doing politics based on the leader's image, which involves unilateral and personalistic decisions while centralizing power and rejecting cooperation with instituions, as long as it does not suit the leader's interests or beliefs. The investigation employs a comparative method of analyisis, grounded in a positivist apporach, drawing from primary documents, including speeches, official policy documents, and public statements. To measure the behavioral patterns of these leaders, three indicators are used to analyze how they employ ego-politics as a rational strategy to reject international cooperation and prioritize national interests. 1) the use of a personalist and populist-nationalist rhethoric, 2) obstructive behavior, and 3) prioritizing bilateral relations over institutional channels. The puzzle of this investigation is to explain how ego-politics is a causal factor in the rejection of multilateralism, generating uncerainty, unilateral decisions, internal and external polariation. Thus, by analyzing and explaining the behavior of these ego-political actors in contemproary world politics, this thesis bring valuable isnights in understanding how Trump and Orban diminish the influence od instituions through the use of vetoes, withdrawals from instituions, open criticism with a spefici personalist and populist-nationalist rhethotic, and direct negiotiations with states overstepping institutional norms. The thesis concluded that ego-political leadership negatively impacts global governance and alters the international system, especially in today's world, where states and instituions are deeply interdependent
