Crime, Clicks, and Concern: Exploring the Influence of crime-related Media narratives on fear of crime : A qualitative study in icelandic setting

    No full text
Background: Fear of crime is a very uncomfortable situation to be in, and even worse if the news media encourages it. This study aims to look at crime-related news media narratives and fear of crime among people in Iceland. Limited to almost no-existent research has been made in Icelandic context, and therefore it is interesting to know how the news media affects Icelanders. International studies talk about sensationalism and exaggerations when it comes to crime-related news reporting, with that said constructive journalism is needed. Method: Nine Icelandic participants offered to participate in this study conducted semi-structured interviews. Later on the data was analysed with help of reflexive thematic analysis (RTA). Results: From the analysis six key themes were formed: 1) Framing of media and crime news, 2) The reality of crime news media, 3) Media shaping fear of crime, 4) Critical engagement with media representations, 4) Fear in context: Identity, social position and ethnicity, and 6) Improvements in media reporting. These key themes gave a clear connection to how media narratives affect fear of crime among individuals and creates context of fear and questions individuals’ safety in public. Conclusion: Icelandic participants experience fear of crime when consuming crime-related news media narratives. Icelandic media tends to exaggerate which leads to sensational journalism and reports that crime is on the rise. Also, participants tend to get their news from social media platforms. This thesis lacks further research in this specific topic but makes up for it with enriched data samples.       Keywords: Crime news narratives, Crime-related media, Sensationalism, Fear of crime, Constructive journalism.

ASYLUM SEEKER INTEGRATION POLICIES IN GERMANY AND CANADA

    No full text
This thesis contributes to the emerging literature on asylum seeker integration by carrying out a critical discursive policy analysis of the integration frameworks in Germany and Canada. By the application of What is the Problem Represented to Be? by Bacchi. The thesis examines the construction of the difficulties of accessing employment, healthcare, and social inclusion by asylum seekers through an analysis of policy documents and official narratives. It concludes that even though both nations present their policies as helpful and ready to comply with international commitments, they carry opposing assumptions and influence asylum seekers as weak people in need of protection and a potential drain on national resources. BAMF Brief Analysis demonstrates how German integration discourse frames parent-child multilingualism in migrant Muslim families as individual failure, diverting attention from structural gaps in education and support. Through a securitization lens, such framings construct language diversity as a threat, justifying assimilationist policies. Constructivist IR theory emphasizes that policy narratives actively produce social realities by defining belonging, privileging an exclusionary notion of ‘Germaneness. Applying Bache’s WPR approach reveals how problem representations legitimize deficit models of multilingualism, reinforcing Eurocentric norms and marginalizing hybrid identities. This comparative design will allow us to analyze how liberal democracies manage to reconcile humanitarian commitments with national security concerns. The thesis made is that these representations are not neutral but indicate wider conflicts between humanitarian principles and security-based governance, and in the end, restrain the transformative capacity of integration policies.

The Assessment of Errors in Condominium Flats : A comparison between Sweden and Finland

The purchase of a tenant-owned apartment (bostadsrätt), i.e. a share in a tenant-owners' association linked to the right to use a dwelling in the association's buildings, is for many Swedes, the largest investment of their lives. Similarly, the Finnish equivalent, the housing company apartment (aktiebostad), constitutes the largest investment for many Finns. However, disputes sometimes arise between buyers and sellers regarding the transferred property. The type of disputes addressed in this thesis are those concerning actual defects in the purchase of these homes. The assessment of such defects and the possibility of bringing claims will be examined both under Swedish and Finnish law, and subsequently compared in order to identify similarities and differences between the two systems. In addition, the seller’s duty to disclose information, and the buyer’s duty to investigate, will also be analysed under both country's laws to enable a comparative study in this regard as well.

    No full text
Abstract This study explores the influence of media framing on public perceptions of immigrants in South Africa, with a focus on data retrived from The Daily Sun newspaper. Utilizing framing theory, it analyses how representations of black immigrants contribute to the xenophobic attitudes and violence in the country. Through a qualitative content analysis, the research highlights the media's role in shaping narratives around immigration and immigrants, revealing the potential consequences of such portrayals on societal attitudes. This examination underscores the need for critical engagement with media representations in order to address and mitigate bias and targeting stemming from misrepresentation. The findings of the study indicate intolerance, exclusion and violence against fellow African immigrants relatively due the negative media presentation observed in The Daily Sun newspaper.

The Effectiveness of Digital Tools in Reading Tasks for Dyslexic L2 Learners in Swedish Elementary Schools (4-6) : Användbarheten av digitala verktyg i läsuppgifter för dyslektiska L2-elever i svenska grundskolor (årskurs 4-6)

    No full text
In an inclusive educational framework, ensuring that all students, regardless of their cognitive differences, receive equitable learning opportunities remains a fundamental principle. Dyslexic students, particularly L2 learners, face complex challenges in acquiring independent reading proficiency, an essential skill for academic success and lifelong intellectual engagement. As literacy remains a gateway to broader societal participation, the integration of digital tools guided by principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) emerges as a potential solution to mitigate the struggles faced by dyslexic learners. This study examines how teachers in Swedish elementary schools utilize digital interventions to facilitate reading development among dyslexic L2 English learners. It further explores the barriers encountered by educators, with a focus on pedagogical adaptation, digital competence, and the limitations of technology-driven instruction. These will be analyzed through the lens of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Through qualitative analysis of teacher experiences, the study highlights both the transformative potential and the constraints of digital tools in literacy education. Findings suggest that while digital tools enhance accessibility and engagement, their impact is contingent upon structured implementation and careful pedagogical balance. The study identifies a need for comprehensive teacher training and adaptive integration strategies to ensure digital interventions complement, rather than replace, foundational literacy instruction. In navigating the complexities of technological inclusion, educators must reconcile innovation with traditional literacy frameworks to foster independent reading development

Film Production as Expansive Learning in Social Studies at an Upper Secondary School

    No full text
This paper investigates the potential and challenges of utilizing filmmaking in educational settings to foster agency, promote active citizenship, and empower young people to engage in social action. Drawing on activity theory, which emphasizes the dynamic interplay between individuals, social context, and cultural artifacts, the study examines filmmaking projects within social studies in an upper secondary school in Sweden. The concept of expansive learning is employed to illustrate how such projects can transcend traditional subject matter knowledge, fostering agency and engagement in social actions. Based on a thematic analysis of interviews with five students and two teachers, findings reveal that filmmaking encourages active engagement with social studies topics. Students are required to research, analyze, and interpret societal issues beyond the classroom, transforming them from passive information consumers to active participants in the learning process. This hands-on exploration and creative expression have the potential of helping students construct a deeper understanding of complex social studies concepts. However, the study also identifies significant challenges in film production, including the need for both media literacy and technical competencies to effectively explore and represent subject content. An activity theoretical model was used to visualize and make these challenges tangible.

Why do countries resettle refugees? An analysis of Sweden's commitment to refugee resettlement

    No full text
This article examines the motivations behind Sweden’s longstanding commitment to refugee resettlement, contributingto broader debates about state-led humanitarian action and global responsibility sharing. Drawing on parliamentarydebates from the 1950s to the 2020s, the study identifies key shifts in how Swedish policymakers have framedand implemented resettlement as a durable solution in collaboration with the UNHCR. Initially driven by labor marketneeds and humanitarian concerns post-World War II, Sweden’s policy shifted towards more diverse, non-Europeanrefugee groups in the 1970s and beyond, showcasing a broader commitment to international solidarity and responsibilitysharing. The parliamentary debates reflect a political consensus to support the growth of the internationalrefugee resettlement regime by showing humanitarian leadership and leading by example. The recent 2022 policyshift to reduce the refugee quota signals a recalibration influenced by domestic concerns

    Profession at hand

The overall aim of this dissertation is to explain how and why chiropractors as a professional group were able to become licensed in the Swedish health care system during the period 1922-1999. Of specific interest is why it was the group of foreign-educated chiropractors that received licensing before both other groups of chiropractors with Swedish education and other alternative medicine professional groups.  The focus of the investigation is on the chiropractors' own professional associations and their strategies for influencing the processes that lead to the professional group's licensing. The dissertation uses an archival ethnographic method and the most central source material consists of archival material, the state's public investigations, reports, parliamentary motions, government bills and parliamentary debates as well as various types of consultation responses. Newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, submissions and debate articles have also been important sources.  Based on Pierre Bourdieu, Andrew Abbott, Anne Witz and neo-Weberian professional theory, the study shows how chiropractors during the research period presented themselves as professionals, in what way they did this and how this was received by other actors. Furthermore, chiropractors' boundary work is made visible as expressed in a series of exclusions, closures and othering, as well as reactions to these from other professional groups. This is in turn placed in a relational and historical context.  The dissertation's research area is particularly interesting because it partly makes visible how a previously excluded actor is made professional enough to obtain licensure, and partly it is the first dissertation of its kind that has studied chiropractic and chiropractors in a Swedish context
