En kropp av spöken : A Body of Ghosts

    No full text
Based on a series of attempts to capture, focus and preserve memories and what has been lost, A Body of Ghosts evokes what moves in the destructive, towards oblivion or forgetfulness. Before I forget, I want to tell you about the loss of a close friend and about a time that changed us fundamentally. I want you to see the struggles that take place on the periphery of society. I want to talk about the transition, both physical and invisible, from boy to woman. This work is a construction containing our stories, Meril’s and mine, wherein memories and collected objects meet and reconfigure, the everyday and the suggestive intertwine. I find myself in the gap between dream and reality, a process that has led me to an obscure place where a distortion occurs; a place where time uncovers fragments from then and now. Emotions, situations and events have been loaded into these objects: an H&M jacket I wore when I got dumped at the age of 24, and after which I never felt the same kind of youthful, burning love. Casts of a vaginal dilator, at 5, 6, 7, 8, inches, to be used after gender reassignment surgery and forever more.  Thus objects undergo transitions into sculptures. Sculptures become symbols of crucial memories, repetitions and imitations of the original. Time has been left in the material, something non-physical placed in the physical.  My life mirrors Meril, but something remains out of reach. Screens of latex and metal shield my ambivalence towards this revelation of self. The camera inhibiting the act of remembering, keeping me from a long-lost friend. Photosensitive, only to be kept in the dark. Here, the works are partially concealed; the visitor must enter behind architectural partitions or into a hidden room in order to receive the whole story. The visitor is a voyeur outside the work but once inside it, becomes the observed. Behind each layer is a new fragment of the whole and thus the story unfolds. A Body of Ghosts in the void

    SET/SÄTT

    No full text
A complementary text to the masters project SET/SÄTT that includes an exhibition and an image-based essay in the format of a bound artist book.  The physical essay is made up of several risograph printed pages depicting images of the components that that compose SET/SÄTT. The pages are bound together so that it folds out in the fashion of a map or a gift card. Although, the book folds out into a myriad of interconnecting folds that takes some time and careful planning to expose. Every edition of the physical essay is unique. SET/SÄTT is a “plastic” sculpture, malleable and subject to its surroundings. It consists of a collection of components with the same prerequisites, but whose combination is continually restructured in relation to its environment. Materially the work consists of wooden sticks with accompanying joints that lock into each other using tension in the fiber. My method is inspired by practices such as shipbuilding, woodworking, video game design, concretism and nomadic esthetics with the ambition to create a tool. An instrument that allows the user to quickly and with ease draw up lines within a space, like a three dimensional form of sketching. During the master exhibition, a series of sculptures were constructed, reconstructed and deconstructed in between open hours.

The Sensing Salon : How Is The Covid Pandemic Affecting The Human?

    No full text
The Sensing Salon collaborated with artist and reader Arely Amaut to images a poethical reading for the question: How is the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the human? In January 2020, the Sensing Salon in Lisbon invited guests as well as Lisbon-based artists, activists and intellectuals to join a study group departing from the question “what would become of the human if expressed through the elements?” The conversation, experience and experiments of that week, as well as the global crisis that followed it, made it impossible to avoid the question: “how is the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the human?”, hence this reading emerges here. The installation is part of the exhibition “Not Fully Human, Not Human At All” curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Bettina Steinbrügge at Kunsteverein Hamburg from 24 Oct 2020 to 24 Jan 2021 and at Kadist, Paris from 9 April to 11 July 2021

Black Metal, Ecology and Contemporary Nihilism

    No full text
Abstract 1: Master Thesis - Investigating the relationship between the aesthetics of Black Metal and its ecological and nihilistic implications with contemporary painting, comics and Chaos Magick spiritual practice. Abstract 2: Documentation of solo exhibition titled Zurbaráns' Dream. The works take as a starting point the paintings of Saint Francis by Francisco De Zurbarán. The depictions of Saint Francis within Catholic mythology in the 16th/17th century used symbolic postures and objects to create paintings that were instructional for spiritual transcendence. My paintings are developed from an esoteric fiction manipulated by the process of lucid dreaming. They are inspired by Zurbaráns' 'dream' of using art and iconography as tools for spiritual transcendence

    The Sensing Salon

    No full text
The Sensing Salon is a studio practice, conceived by Valentina Desideri and Denise Ferreira da Silva, that expands the image of art beyond objects, events, and discourse to include the healing arts. Through formats that facilitate collaborative studying and experimenting with different practices and tools for reading (e.g. Tarot and Astrology) and healing (e.g. Reiki and Political Therapy), it fosters a form of sociality that attends to our deeply implicated existence. For this occasion, the Sensing Salon will assume a two-parts format: a private study group (with guests) during four days (Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 January) which will culminate in an open-sharing of the process of Friday 17 January evening and a one-day public symposium, on Saturday 18 January. The study group will gather guests who will take part in the symposium as well as Lisbon-based artists, activists and intellectuals. The study group will depart from the question that closes Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva’s film Serpent Rain (2016): “what would become of the human if expressed through the elements?” A question inspired by the sense that the grip the metaphysics of linearity (and its attendant onto-epistemological descriptors, such as separability and fixity) has on our imagination accounts for the prevalence of violence in modern global existence. From experimenting with practices and tools that presume deep implicancy (such as Tarot, Reiki, Astrology, etc.), over five years now, we found that, among other things, they create a form of sociality that does not presume the fundamental separability that prevails in philosophical, social scientific, and commonsensical representations of existence. An important aspect of these practices is that the classic elements (air, fire, water, and earth) and correspondence (or similarity) constitute their lexicon and grammar. By framing the question(ing) of the human around the possibility of describing it using the elements, we hope to create a study space to explore the possibilities that open up when similarity replaces linearity as the metaphysical basis for thinking and existing. The study group will gather for 4 days (from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th January) and dedicate each day to the study of the human through one element. We have invited guests to frame the work on each element and open up some possibilities of rethinking the category of the Human through their practice and the way it relates to that element. The 4 guests are: – Air (abstraction, formal cause, interpretation, shape, power as rule): Mark Harris is an academic and former land rights lawyer working on themes related to indigenous rights and water.– Fire (transubstantiation, final cause, creation, beginning, power as energy): Jota Mombaça is a writer and performer who has worked on the relation between humanity and monstrosity, the end of the world, anti-colonial justice and visionary fiction.– Earth (motion, generation, material cause, raw material, consolidation, power as oppression): Kobe Matthys/Agency is an activist and artist whose practices include permaculture and other sustainable methods.– Water (Distillation, relaton, efficient cause, nutrient, extraction, power as relation): Stacey Ho is a Vancouver-based artist whose work explores intimacy through building relations which may be expressed as infusion as well as writing. On Friday 17 January, at 7pm, we will host an open event where all that we were able to gather and experiment will be shared with a wider public, together with Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva’s film Serpent Rain (2016). On Saturday 18 January we will host the symposium Toward a Transformative Theory of Justice, which will elaborate on the questions that guide this iteration of the Sensing Salon. We will attempt to weave together the Elements, our guests’ practices and the ways of thinking about Justice that those open up. Raquel Lima will give the keynote lecture. Co-produced and co-commissioned byKADIST, Paris, in the framework of KADIST’s three-year project Not Fully Human, Not Human at All, curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, together with Hangar, Lisbon and Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbo
