Multi-choice policing in Africa
No full textPolicing is crucial to how Africans experience the freedoms of democracy and determines to a large degree the levels of economic investment they will enjoy. Yet it is a neglected area of study. Based on field research, this book reveals the surprising variety of people involved in policing besides the state police. Indeed many Africans are faced with a wide choice of public and private, legal and illegal, effective and ineffective policing. Policing in Africa is very much more than what the police do. It concerns the activities of business interests, residential communities, cultural groups, criminal organisations, local political figures and governments. The bush is sweet : identity, power and development among WoDaaBe Fulani in Niger
No full textIn this book Kristín Loftsdóttir gives the reader a highly personal insight into the lives of the Wodaabe nomads of Niger, who are striving to make a living between the bush and the city. Spending nearly two years as a Wodaabe, within a Wodaabe extended family and alternating between the nomadic setting of the bush and the urbanised life-style of the capital, Niamey, she was in a unique position to observe the effects that increasing urbanisation and globalisation, together with the modern tourist industry’s preconceptions and demands, have had on the identity and power relations of the Wodaabe. Interwoven with the abstract scientific observations are the more personal reflections and analyses of a young white woman on living within, and sharing all aspects of, the everyday lives of the Wodaabe with the broad spectrum of reactions which this entails. No full textDurante a guerra fria o mundo ocidental em geral considerava os movimentos nacionais de libertação na Guiné Bissau e na África Austral como ”terroristas” e/ou ”comunistas”. A Suécia constituiu uma excepção, tendo depois sido seguida pelos outros países nórdicos. Com base numa decisão parlamentar aprovada por uma larga maioria, a Suécia tornou-se, em 1969, o primeiro país do Ocidente a dar ajuda oficial aos movimentos nacionalistas. Estes movimentos depois de uma prolongada luta armada contra o poder colonial português, o governo de minoria branca e o apartheid, sairiam vencedores e tornar-se-iam os partidos dominantes nos seus países.No presente volume descreve-se o surgimento de uma opinião na Suécia e a ajuda deste país aos movimentos de libertação MPLA (Angola), FRELIMO (Moçambique) e PAIGC (Guiné-Bissau).
