Indigenous entrepreneurs and their engagement with the tax system

Alessandro and Mattia are returning to the Nulungu Research Institute for a research project, mentored by Dr Tarunna Sebastian (Pitjantjatjara/Anmatyerre). Last year they had the opportunity to yarn with local Indigenous entrepreneurs and their accountants/business advisors about perceptions of and engagement with the tax system. Those yarns were conducted primarily in Yawuru and Jukun as well as with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people outside these nations but with lineage and/or experience in the Kimberley. The event will start with an initial presentation summarising the findings from the 2024 visit and continue with a yarning circle. The latter has two main aims: - Hearing whether and how the findings resonate/do not resonate with participants (own) experience with the tax system, as well as broader aspects of managing an organisation. - Seeking further advice on how Indigenous entrepreneurs’ engagement with the tax system can be smoothened/improved, including practical solutions that can be embraced by both entrepreneurs, accountants, professional bodies, and regulators. You do not need to be an Indigenous entrepreneur and/or an accountant or business advisor to attend the event. Alessandro and Mattia will remain in the region for a fortnight (9-20 June) and will take this trip as an opportunity to reach out to Indigenous entrepreneurs and accountants located in other nations across the Kimberley. For this reason, they are encouraging anyone who might be interested in speaking to them, but cannot make it to the event, to reach out in advance of this event so that their insights can contribute to the research. Ultimately, the aim of this project is to benefit Indigenous entrepreneurs and their communities across the Kimberley, whatever nation they belong to and whatever stage of their entrepreneurial journey they are at
