Good collections management : Guidance for handling human remains in museum collections

    No full text
This document is aimed at museums in Sweden with collections that include human remains. The purpose of this document is to support museums internally within the organisation and externally in contact with the surrounding community. It has been compiled for museums of all types, but diferent museums may encounter diferent issues depending on the form of organisation or the size or types of collections. This is why every museum should set up its own policy documents and procedures suitable for its own museological needs and conditions. Other organisations with museum collections may also fnd this document useful

Skador på fornlämningar i samband med fiberdragning

    No full text

    No full text
This paper presents a very early archaeological excavation report and its author, Frédéric Troyon (1815–1866), a young Swiss archaeologist. Since 1846 his report has been kept almost unnoticed in the archives of the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities (ATA) in Stockholm. Half a century ago it was rediscovered by Jan Peder Lamm. It is rare not only as to its early date, but also in having been written by a foreigner who excavated at his own initiative in Sweden. The site was a Late Iron Age cemetery on the island of Munsö in Lake Mälaren (Björn järnsidas hög, Raä Munsö 57:1, L2016:6690). Frédéric Troyon was a citizen of Lausanne in the canton of Vaud. He spent a year and a half in Stockholm in 1845–46, studying the collections of the Museum of National Antiquities while filling a position at the Swedish Royal Court as tutor in the French language and culture to the royal princes. After returning to Switzerland he introduced the three-period system in his homeland and became a great pioneer of Swiss archaeology

    Hvor er runene?

    No full text
In the Scandinavian Runic-text Database, 69 medieval objects with runic inscriptions from Oslo are registered. Archaeologists found most of these inscriptions during large excavations in the 1970s and 1980s. Since 2013, the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research has conducted extensive archaeological excavationsin Oslo, but found only 13 new runic inscriptions, which raised the total number of inscriptions to 82. In this article I present the new inscriptions and discuss the irrepresentativity in the archaeological record, comparing the excavations from forty years ago to the modern urban excavations. I discuss three possible representational factors: conditions for preservation; methods of excavation; and the field archaeologist's attention to rare finds. I conclude that the methods for excavation probably have been the most to blame fo rthe shortage of runic inscriptions these last few years. Large, prestigious excavations like the Follo Line Project force a stricter, more priority-based policy when it comes to object procurement in the field
