Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna (1591–1643) : a critical reassessment of his two journeys to the Near East
No full textBengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna’s travels in the Near East have not earned him the same kind of regard as other 16th, 17th and 18th century travellers have been accorded, yet his story is unusually interesting in light of documentary evidence, collected by later writers, that allows us to identify, often with great precision, some of the places he visited. Beginning with his stay in the Holy Land in 1613, this study examines the evidence documenting the sacred sites he saw there, before turning to his second journey of 1617–1618, when he visited Iran and Iraq. His presence in Isfahan, Shiraz and Khoshkrud is documented by multiple, later witnesses, whereas his visits to the archaeological sites of Persepolis and Naqš-e Rustam are doubtful. In Iraq, his visit to the archaeological sites of ‘Aqar Qūf and Tell Ibrahim al-Khalil can be confirmed. Oxenstierna is a unique figure in the history of European travellers who visited the Near East during the 17th century, but a modern assessment of his travels is needed. The purpose of the present communication is to offer a critical appreciation of his achievement through a detailed analysis of places mentioned in his text, several of which are identified for the first time and several of which are exposed as fictitious

No full textIda Nilsson (1840–1929), the youngest daughter of the famous scientist and archaeologist Sven Nilsson (1787–1883), accompanied her father to scientific meetings all over Europe. In 1869 the fourth Congress for Prehistoric Archaeology and Anthropology was held in Copenhagen. The Nilssons were of course invited. Ida told her close friend Anna Hierta about her experiences in a long letter. It was the first archaeological congress where she and other ladies were officially welcome. Ida’s long letter gives us invaluable information on how a young lady found herway in science. She writes about discussions with archaeologists, excursions, dinnersand speeches. Her letter is an invaluable source for the proceedings of the congress. There were several other ladies present at the congress. Somehow these brave ladies have been forgotten in the history of our discipline

De fynd som tas om hand och bevaras blir därigenom den fysiska länken till en fornlämning som i övrigt kan vara helt borttagen.Fynden är även en viktig nyckel till kunskapen om och tolkningen av en fornlämning. De är ett källmaterial både till tolkningen av den pågående undersökningen och för framtida forskningsfrågor. Fynden är även viktiga för arbetet med tillgängliggörandet och spridandet av kunskap om arkeologin till en bredare allmänhet. </p

No full textHur iscensätts de nedlagda psykiatriska sjukhusens kulturarv? Vilken plats får komplexa kulturarv ta i samtidens stadsutvecklingsprojekt? Forskningsprojektet Ulleråker – funktionsnedsättning och kulturarv har undersökt hur kulturarv görs vid Ulleråker i Uppsala – ett av många före detta psykiatriska sjukhus som genomgått en stadsutvecklingsprocess och omvandlats till bostadsområde. I boken diskuteras hur Ulleråkers patienter och deras liv ihågkoms eller glöms bort i det nya stadslandskapet genom kreativ verksamhet och offentlig konst, namngivning av gator, kvarter och platser och i dagspressen. Bokens kapitel visar hur kulturarv skapas av aktörer vilka traditionellt inte räknats som drivande i kulturarvsprocesser, men som i högsta grad är centrala i dessa processer
