Finds of writing equipment from Birka’s Garrison
No full textThe excavations of Birka’s Garrison in 1997–2004 produced a rich and varied findmaterial of unusual character. Most striking are the weapons, 400 in total. The warriors who lived in the Garrison seem from the finds to have been well trained in fighting techniques and to have been in contact with distant lands. Perhaps they were periodically in foreign service, such as the Byzantine Emperor’s Varangian guard. Apart from the great number of weapons, some objects were found that remind us of everyday life. Re-examination and analysis of the excavation finds has identified a number of these as linked to writing activities, namely, runic plate amulets, bone fragments incised with runes and an iron stylus. To these, the author also wishes to add apossible wax tablet in the form of a damaged decorated antler plate found during excavations in the Garrison in 1934. The runic amulets and rune bones belonged to the private sphere and bore magical-ritual formulae. These fit well within amartial environment where the warriors would have invoked protection. The stylus and the wax tablet on the other hand belonged to a different, clerical, sphere

Radiocarbon dating of purified lipid extracts from prehistoric pottery
No full textIn this paper we present the results of an investigation where we try to date pottery from an Early to Middle Iron Age site in eastern middle Sweden. An overarching aim is to contribute to the discussion of the timing of a change inland-use and settlement structure that occurs in the middle of the first millennium CE. Selecting a well preserved site for excavation, we performed both plantmacrofossil analyses of soil-samples and lipid residue analyses on pottery. Both archaeobotanical materials as well as lipid extracts were subjected to radiocarbondating. The results show that the radiocarbon dating of purified lipid extractsfrom prehistoric pottery is possible

Museernas samhällsrelevans : en kunskapsöversikt över museers bidrag till social hållbarhet
No full textI samhället finns förväntningar på att museerna ska engagera sig i hållbar utveckling. Svenska staten och stora internationella organisationer ser museerna som samhällsrelevanta aktörer som bidrar till en hållbar framtid. Däremot har museer i Sverige ingen skyldighet att driva hållbarhetsfrågorna framåt – snarare handlar det just om en förväntan utifrån, och om sektorns eller enskilda museers självpåtagna uppdrag. Hållbarhetsarbete upplevs av många som stort och resurs-krävande, och det finns en viss osäkerhet kring vad hållbarhetsbegreppen innebär i praktiken. Social hållbarhet upplevs som ett vagt begrepp och därför svårt att förhålla sig till. Det finns många exempel på hur museer bidrar till samhällsutvecklingen. Samlingarna är en del av samhällets kollektiva minne och en resurs för folkbildning, samt en tillförlitlig källa som stödjer ett brett utbud av forskning och innovation. Museer har ett starkt samarbete med skolväsendet och är en demokratisk arena för samtal och reflektion. Museerna bidrar storskaligt till människors välbefinnande, då museimiljön möjliggör förståelse mellan grupper och skapar en känsla av tillhörighet. Kulturutövande främjar samarbeten och mångfald i samhället. Museernas tillgängliggörande av kulturella resurser har bevisats leda till människors ökade välmående. Allt detta gör att det finns förhoppningar på att museer kan stärka samhällets hållbara utveckling, men det finns utmaningar: brist på resurser, svårigheter att nå ut till ny publik och tillfällen när verksamheten motverkar hållbarhetsmålen trots goda intentioner. Museer i Sverige verkar i en demokratisk kontext som inte bör tas för given och risken för att museers inflytande kan missbrukas bör tas på allvar. Den här kunskapsöversikten är ett övergripande underlag om museer och social hållbarhet för Riksantikvarieämbetet, men kan också användas av andra som arbetar med museifrågor

Balderus orphicus : en Ovidiusparafras i Snorre Sturlassons berättelse om Balders död?
No full textThis text explores the influence of Ovid’s account of Orpheus’ death in Metamorphoses on Snorri Sturluson’s account of Baldr’s death in Gylfaginning. In examining the similarities and differences between the two narratives, particular emphasis is placed on elements such as the invulnerability of a mythic protagonist, his tragic death resulting from the breaking of an enchantment, and his lamentation by the animate and inanimate forces of nature. While acknowledging the differences in the narratives, the author suggests that Snorri drew on a specific motif from Ovid’s work to enhance his own account of Baldr’s death. The text briefly touches on the complex relationship between classical and Norse mythology, highlighting the creative reinterpretation and adaptation of mythic themes in medieval literature. In conclusion, the author proposes that Snorri’s skillful synthesis of various sources reflects his role as a creative innovator within the living tradition of mythic storytelling
Vallfartskyrkan i Edsleskog : en romansk tegelkyrka i norra Dalsland
No full textArchaeological excavations conducted in 2019–2021 have revealed the remains of one of the largest Romanesque churches in the diocese of Skara. According to a papal letter from Pope Honorius III, the church was erected to commemorate the martyrdom of a local priest, Nils, or Nicolaus, who was eventually elevated to the status of a local saint. The location of the church, in the province of Dalsland, a wooded, sparsely populated, and remote area of southwestern Sweden, is an unlikely spot for such a grand building. It was constructed as a large basilica made of brick. Coin finds and radiocarbon dates indicate that the church was probably built sometime in the period 1196–1208. The northern section of the church, including a small chapel or sacristy and the northern transept, was added around 1220
