Motivation in dance : Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of adult evening class pupils
The purpose of this study is to examine what motivates adult pupils to participate evening dance classes at School of Dance and Circus. In addition to this, the purpose is to find out if their motivation is more intrinsic or extrinsic. Furthermore, the study aims towards investigating how dance pedagogues can develop their teaching with this specific target group to support the pupil’s interests and desires. The questionnaires of one evening dance course consisting of 11 pupils are analysed with Grounded Theory. The results show that there are 15 motivational factors: Joy, Development in dance, Physical development, Promotion of mental well-being, Other activity and Other form of training, Price, Curiosity, Cognitive development, Challenge, Aesthetics, Different experience of dance class, Social interaction, Prevention of pain and Prevention of injuries. The first six ones can be summarized as Self-fulfilment that work as the basis for the theory of the study. It is also shown that the motivation of the target group is more intrinsic than extrinsic. Promotion of experience of flow and creativity, preference of using mastery goal structures and teaching with direct instructions enforce intrinsic motivation and serve pupils’ interests and desires. These are suggested to dance pedagogues to use for developing their teaching with this target group
Frasen ”De Brända Landen” ekade i mitt huvud.

To let things unfold (by catching the centre)
The research project wasconducted by Jan Burkhardt and Cecilia Roos between 2016-2018 and financed by Stockholm University of the Arts. The research started with the pilot study Gestures of exchangefrom a shared interest in how performers exchange methods during an artistic process and our aim was to explore different ways of articulating that. During that study we realized that our interest was rather in how we can experience each other’s methods through sensation. That brought us into To let things unfold (by catching the centre), where we have been working on expanding the notions of sensation and practicing different ways that experiences of sensation can be used as a material in choreographic processes. The questions we have asked ourselves are:What is the role of sensation in choreographic processes? In what ways are sensations exchanged, transformed and transacted between performers in a creative process? What kind of possibilities can emerge out of purposelessness? The act of sharing became our primary research practice supported by sensation as one of the fundaments for sharing. The completed activities and the result of the research will be published in Nordic Journal of Dance in October 2019

Composing The Performance : An Exploration Of Musical Composition As A Dramaturgical Strategy In Contemporary Intermedial Theatre
This thesis explores musical composition in the context of contemporary theatre. It suggests methods where compositional thinking – broadly understood – can be used as a dramaturgical device in the creation of theatre performances. Such musicalization of theatre provides new methods for an artistic practice and questions traditional artistic hierarchies and working structures. The investigation departs from a process of transference of radiophonic art to stage performances. From this a series of interdisciplinary works in the intersection between concert, theatre performance, radio play and music theatre has been created, each with different approaches to the roles and functions of musical composition. Through these works the creative processes and methods are examined and analysed. The notion of vertical dramaturgy and polyphony in theatre contexts is discussed and demonstrated, which pinpoints the significance of interaction between the elements of a performance. The interplay between dramatic writing, acting methods and musical composition is under scrutiny, as is the way in which visual elements as video, light and scenography are integrated into polyphonic theatre experiences. Transformation is an essential compositional and dramaturgical tool as it allows a performance to move seamlessly between different art forms, continuously creating new relationships. Through the research a model for interdisciplinary, collaborative work in performing arts emerges. The concepts of Shared space and Shared time are introduced and enable a collective ‘thinking-through-practice’ and expansion of the artistic roles. This joint arena of space and time opens up new connections, interactions and mutual exchanges between artists and art forms. The outcome provides a range of artistic methods in the field of contemporary intermedial theatre where musical composition is one of the dramaturgical devices for composing the performances
On Temperament, Steps and other Apparatuses of my Choreographic Practice:
Similarly to how I write dance, my approach to writing this essay will be descriptive, in such a way developed by Simon Hecquet and Sabine Prokhoris in their book Fabriques de la Danse1. Description for them is a way to construct gazes or manners of seeing2 and not merely the communication of a preexisting gaze. In such, it is a mode of giving accounts to another as well as to oneself. In this giving of accounts, my aim is to dissect some of the choreographic apparatuses I have been developing throughout the years, analyse what they do and if they are useful in fulfilling what I want my work to do. This essay will consider my entire body of works and will especially focus on the current work ’d he meant vary a shin’s, a dance trio for Eva Honings, Lena Schattenberg and myself
Granatäppleblomknopp : rytm som dramatisk båge
ABSTRACT How can I as a Swedish dancer devoted to the Indian classical dance form, kathak, re root it into my own cultural sphere? And express topics beyond the Sub Indian continent without diluting the essence of the art form? I don’t want to create a new dance style.I don’t want to add anything. I want to explore and investigate how I within the tradition of kathak dance and Hindustani music can shuffle the classical format in order to create a longer narrative. To create a dramaturgical nerve in the performance and take it further than the traditional short dances and compositions connected by being strung together on a basic rhythm. During this work I have followed different strands of evolution within me as a kathak dancers as well as personal experiences that has led up to this need of making it my kathak dance, rather than my Indian kathak dance. It’s also a close study of the relationship between a student and her master and how the master forces his student to mature to become her own master. I want to use the kathak dance as an artistic expression to create performances based on topics interesting to me. I want to use the rhythmical patterns to enhance, elaborate and ornament the story told. How can I use the bols and sound from the kathak dance and Hindustani music? What happens if I instead of using bols create similar material but based on the Swedish language? The unexpected result of my research, the unexpected finding of what happened with me after I decided to drop India, and to focus my gaze to my own cultural space by being a native Swedish person living in Stockholm was that I lost my dance. I lost my geography.
