Circus as a practice of hope : the last Human on Earth (is a circus artist). Sensing the world through circus arts
In times of climate catastrophe, refugee crises and Covid-19, the question of the responsibility that artists and scholars have is becoming increasingly urgent. What is the role of circus within society? How far does this form of art and entertainment correlate with historical and contemporary social interests? How does circus research position itself as a relevant field of research within academia in the 21st century? Those questions will be explored within the series Adventures in Circus Research– Facing a New Decade, curated by academic Dr. Franziska Trapp. By featuring circus researchers, we give them the space to explain the nature and significance of their research directly to the circus community and to highlight the practical impact of their research on the circus world and its relevance for society. In the sixth article of the series, Marie-Andrée Robitaille, PhD at the faculty of Artistic research at Stockholm University of the Arts in Sweden, provides insights into her doctoral artistic project in which she searches for ethical alternatives to human exceptionalism in circus art
We wanted to break with predjudices-that´s where it all started. : Podcast as a tool to develop a norm-critical pedagogy in dance education.
We wanted to break with prejudices- that´s where it all started.Podcast as a tool to develop a norm-critical pedagogy in dance education. This master thesis explores issues about academic dance education in the dynamic of a traditional and contemporary expectations in the discipline. In dialogue with dance students at an aesthetic program in the context of the upper secondary school/ the gymnasium in Sweden, dance theory is analysed from a norm-critical view. The students have created podcasts about dance styles such as dancehall, twerking, azonto and voguing. The analysis of the data has used action research as a method. The purpose has been to develop the didactics in the course Dance theory in order to reach an increased goal fulfillment, new knowledge and meaning in relation to curriculum and syllabi expectations. The study includes a research overview of dances from the African diaspora, African aesthetics and vernacular dance as well as the whiteness norm and intersectionality. The podcasts have been analyzed in relation to governing documents, traditions of teaching dance and theories of resistance and participation. The joint result from the podcasts about dancehall, twerking and azonto emphasizes the importance of respectfully putting dance styles in a context of origins and history. At the same time, there is an encouragement for cultural encounters where hybrid forms of artistic expression can emerge. Central to the podcasts with voguing is for example that dance can offer a place where you can be yourself despite sexual orientation and norm-breaking lifestyle in a chosen community, and feel safe and accepted. The results from the podcasts call for, and challenge, the governing documents (curriculum and syllabi) for norm-critical views of inclusion and diversity in terms of power, gender norms, tradition and values. Traditions and the norm of whiteness are challenged through various intersections of gender, color and identity etc., and a new canon of dances can take place. The gap between young people's interests and academic dance has diminished during the process of investigation, thanks to a joint acquisition of knowledge and discussions, even though consensus has not been the goal. Based on theories, we can interpret that each new generation will continue to challenge contemporary norms and values.
practical, efficient, necessary
This essay is one part of my Bachelor's degree project, the other part being a dance performance with the title practical, efficient, necessary that was premiered in January of 2021. The essay discusses the main problem of the project (which was necessary movements and the lack thereof in dance) as for thoughts and methods that was used in the project in working with the theme of necessity. The essay begins by looking into movements of necessity from the perspective of a necessary movement being a practical movement that is in relation to survival and sprung out of urgency. It further explores necessary movements from the martial arts-perspective, and more specifically Muay Thai. The essay touches upon subjects such as the nervous system and the stress response as for preparatory movements as long term responses to urgency, while also looking into body-mind split theories. The essay also discusses protests as a method of self-defence, referring to artist and activist Rodney Diverlus analysis of the movements used in Black Lives Matter demonstrations. The main reference and conversation partner to many of the topics discussed in the essay is Pragmatist philosopher John Dewey and his thoughts in Art as Experience (1932) and Experience and Nature (1925). Further the essay describes the various methods used in the process of making the performance such as 'systematic choreographing' and 'temporary truths'. This allowed for further explorations of topics in the essay such as the starting and ending of movements, the power of repetition and sounds as necessity. The essay ends with reflections and refiguring of the concept of necessary movements. This work includes both a performing and a written part.</p
Experiencing Bel Canto : Getting deep into the style
One of the styles that has influenced opera the most through history has been Bel canto. This work is a recompilation of personal research about its history, characteristics and one of its major exponents, G. Rossini. At the same time, it includes a personal approach on the topic of how to create and perform a character and some exercises aimed to improve the singing in the mentioned style.

Climate-Just Worlding
Dansgenrer på svenska gymnasieskolor : en kvantitativ undersökning
Dance genres in Swedish upper secondary school - a quantitative survey Dance as a subject in upper secondary school is a relatively young subject with a vague framing that provides the teachers with more room for interpretation. The aim of this paper is to shed light on a somewhat unexplored researched field and to contribute with knowledge about what dance genres that are featured in Swedish upper secondary schools. The study investigates what genres the students encounter in the everyday dance training and how much time in class. Further, it is investigated which genres the schools bring in as guest genres and who teaches them. The data is collected via a survey that was sent to all Swedish upper secondary schools with an arts program in dance. The results are analyzed and discussed via curriculum theory and Swedish dance history. Some of the main conclusions are that the modern and contemporary dance stands out in more than one way and is well established in dance programs in Swedish upper secondary schools. Another result shows that there is a wide diversity in the genres schools chose to include as a guest genre. The results also show that the most common is to bring in a guest teacher in different subgenres of street dance
Stopp! Min kropp!
The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of intergenerational touch within dance education in upper secondary schools in Sweden, focusing on contact improvisation. In this study, interviews with dance teachers in four upper secondary schools have been used to examine teachers' ideas and choices regarding intergenerational touch in contact improvisation through idea analysis. This study explores how teachers relate to the no-touch discourse and the domain-specific ideology within the contact improvisation movement. It also examines what an ethical approach to intergenerational touch in contact improvisation within upper secondary education could be. The study shows that some strategies teachers use in relation to intergenerational touch could function to downplay or adapt to the no-touch discourse, but no causality can be proven. There is also a proximity between some strategies and the domain-specific ideology within the contact improvisation movement. An ethical approach to intergenerational touch requires teachers to be aware of influences from different idea systems and to be reflexive regarding their own history and basic assumptions. It also requires teachers to get to know their students well and be sensitive to them in every moment.
This project is researching how a comedy show on insanity could be created and aims to research the subject of madness and the performance of insanity. What is the creative idiot? How can play be an option for understanding the Other? The research is the phenomenology of crazy as the unknown, the stranger and the other. This research questions the ethics of the performance as well as its aesthetics. How can crazy perform itself in an international performative arts context? The focus is to understand the Other as the unknown as unavailable to reason and therefore impossible to perform as understandable. The object of research is the conflict between reason and its negation as the unknown stranger. The result of this project is an idea on how to create this performance, as a way of practicing madness in a safe space and enjoy insanity as a way of producing the not yet known, as a way of playing life.
