A review of the potential impacts of climate change on the safety and performance of bridges
Climate service derived indicators to assess the impact of climate change on local river assimilative capacity
Continental climate services provide information on essential climate variables and indicators, which can further be used to address challenges at the local scale. Climate impact indicators are the core data for evaluating the change of the assimilative capacity of the river systems under future projection scenarios. Here, the indicators from the Copernicus pan-European climate service are used to develop and showcase a water management information service for the Asopos River, Greece. River flow indicators are incorporated in the estimation of emission limit values which serve as environmental pressure indicators, for the reference and two future periods (early-and mid-century). Assimilative capacity is evaluated for six heavy metals, namely Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn. Socioeconomic indicators are also utilized to incorporate changes of economic activities in the assessment. Results from the large ensemble of 209 scenarios, consisting of different global circulation, regional climatic and impact model combinations as well as industrial activity evolution, indicate that a decrease (up to 33% of 209 scenarios) of assimilative capacity is more probable than an increase (up to 18% of the scenarios) in a future climate. Local industrial activity evolution also has an effect on the uncertainty of the results for the early century period. We conclude that although climate impact indicators are free of the need for laborious processing, they cannot cover all requirements for local analyses. Consequently information from continental climate services and local data should be used for climate change impact investigations
In summer 2018 many lightning strikes caused forest fires. This report describes a studywere forest fires have been matched with lightning discharges from the SMHI lightningdetection system. The aim has been to investigate which lightning discharges, based onpolarity and strength, that causes forest fires. When lightning strikes and the forest is dry it can sometimes take time for a forest fire tostart. If there has been light rain the surface may be damp, and the lightning can insteadlead to an ember in the deeper drier ground. This ember can smoulder for several daysand, when the surface dries out, ignite and start a forest fire with open flames. Thereforethe time aspect also has been taken into account in this study. The lightning detection system has a median error of 500 m in the positing of lightningdischarge. Therefore the distances ±500 m, ±600 m, ±700 m, ±800 m, ±900 m, ±1000 m,±1100 m and ±1200 m in both x- and y-direction for every forest fire have been analysedseparate. The goal have been to find the distance were most forest fire can be matchedwith: 1) only one lightning discharge and 2) one or several lightning discharges.Of all forest fires caused by lightning strikes only 30-40 percent of them can be matchedwith one lightning discharge. 70-80 percent of the forest fires can be matched with one orseveral lightning discharges. The reason why not all forest fires are matched probablydepends on a combination of uncertainty from the reported forest fires and the lightningdetection system. The uncertainty in the reporting of forest fires is both in the positionand if it really was caused by a lightning strike. In the lightning detection system theuncertainty is both in the position and the registration of lightning discharges. From this study, no clear conclusion can be made on which lightning discharges frompolarity and strength that causes forest fires. The majority of lightning discharges thatcauses forest fires are negative but those are also the most common. Most of the forest fires starts the same day as the lightning discharge, but several alsooccurs a couple of days later, and single forest fires also as long as 6-7 days after thelightning discharge.

Here, the difference in temperature and precipitation climate is described between the most recent normal period 1991–2020 and the previous normal periods during the 20th century; 1901–1930, 1931–1960 and 1961–1990. The focus lies on describing how the climate has changed in relation to the large-scale atmospheric circulation. We have analysed this with different methods: i) comparison with the so-called NAO index that describes the extent to which the large-scale wind pattern over the North Atlantic and European area is characterized by westerlies, and ii) a cluster analysis where all days with similar large-scale air pressure distribution are analysed in detail for each calendar month. The analysis considers observational data from SMHI's temperature and precipitation stations and reanalysis data. The results show clear differences in climate between the different normal periods. In general, the last 30-year period is warmest and wettest for all seasons. The large-scale circulation has also varied between the various normal periods with, for example, 1991–2020 seeing many mild winters with air flowing in from the Atlantic. The results also show that this can only explain part of the difference between the different normal periods. A main conclusion is that for the majority of weather types, it has on average been warmer during the most recent normal period 1991-2020 than during the previous period. Or, in other words, regardless of whether the weather was characterized by situations with mild winds from the Atlantic, or severe winter cold or intense summer heat waves both in connection with high-pressure situations, warming is noted
Cyanobakterier i Östersjön sommaren 2021
