Recent Nordic research in mathematics education illustrated by examples from NORMA17

    No full text
A characterization of recent Nordic research in didactics of mathematics is presented based on the 32 research reports from the Nordic and Baltic countries in the proceedings from NORMA17 (The eighth Nordic conference on didactics of mathematics). Recent Nordic research in didactics of mathematics is observed from several aspects such as choice of problem, theory, method, result, and target for the message. The analyses of the papers on different levels and from a manifold of perspectives build up an image of what Nordic research in DM (didactics of mathematics) contains and represents currently. The closeness and cooperation between researchers in the Nordic countries is characteristic as well as the breadth and variation in the choice of questions, theories, and methods. Research activity seems to flourish most in Norway. Small-scale studies as well as larger projects are visible. A variety of messages about mathematics teaching and learning for all age groups are directed to students, mathematics teachers, teacher educators, and policymakers. Quantitative and qualitative empirical studies dominate. Conceptual or theoretical investigations are rare. Studies of outcomes of interventions, including teaching approaches and experiments are most common, followed by studies of learning and cognition, including problem-solving. There is a need for surveys and overviews as so many new results are exposed

Modelling user experience of adaptive streaming video over fixed capacity links

    No full text
Streaming video continues to experience unprecedented growth. This underscores the need to identify user-centric performance measures and models that will allow operators to satisfy requirements for cost-effective network dimensioning delivered with an acceptable level of user experience. This paper presents an analysis of two novel metrics in the context of fixed capacity links: (i) the average proportion of a video’s playing time during which the quality is reduced and (ii) the average proportion of videos which experience reduced quality at least once during their playing time, based on an M/M/∞ system. Our analysis is shown to hold for the more general M/G/∞ system for metric (i), but not for (ii) and simulation studies show an unexpected form of sensitivity of metric (ii) to the flow duration distribution, contrary to the norm of increasing variance causing worse performance. At typical operational loads these new metrics provide a more sensitive and information rich guide for understanding how user experience degrades, than the widely used average throughput metric does. We further show that only the combined use of this existing and our new metrics can provide a holistic perspective on overall user performance

Efforts to save lives : A qualitative interview study on the stop shooting campaign in Malmö

    No full text
In 2017, an average of one person a month was shot dead in Malmö. Authorities in Sweden stated that more serious violence linked to criminal groups is increasing and measures are being implemented. Malmö's strategy was then to implement a method from the USA called GVI (Group Violence Intervention). The purpose was to reduce the serious violence through cooperation between the police, the municipality and civil society. The method was initially used as a time-limited project, but when the effect showed good results, it was decided to extend it. As a result, we want to investigate how the professionals within the project, Stop Shooting, perceived and thought about the project and its effects. The survey is qualitative and consists of eight semi-structured interviews with professionals within the project. The interviewees work in the police, probation and for Malmö Municipality. The results were interpreted and analyzed on the basis of previous theory and previous research, and the results showed that all in general were positive about the project and its effects, despite the fact that the effects of the project could be perceived in different ways. Finally, we resulted in the project's success being largely due to collaboration between the various actors. The strategy is partly proactive as it tries to counteract continued crime through informative contact with the criminals before they commit more crimes, and partly reactive because the heavier sanctions were introduced only when the criminal groups became the most violent.

A well-functioning and efficient management team is a success factor in both the private and public sectors. The special nature of the management team means that other than classic group development models can be more useful. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether the factors trust, conflict, commitment, responsibility and results in Lencioni's (2002) model are relevant starting points in work with the management teams' effectiveness, with a focus on trust. Based on a self-constructed survey with self-assessment from 74 leaders' assessments, descriptive analyzes have been performed. Furthermore, t-tests, regression analysis and principal component analyzes were performed to answer the study's questions. Based on the results of this study, only moderate support is given for the five factors to explain the management group participants' views on the management group's effectiveness, even if they are individually assessed as relevant. There are indications that with additional questions, the reliability would increase and thus provide clearer support to the five factors. Further studies are needed to clarify this. However, the study provides support for the importance of trust and its independence from demographic variables such as gender, age, sectors or management team experience. Furthermore, the study shows that the management group's efficiency can be described in two components with several parts where the components are about internal and external efficiency, which is also in line with Granberg and Wallenholm (2017). All in all, it gives an idea that alternative models like Lencioni (2002) can be relevant to use and that the five factors trust, conflict, commitment, responsibility and results can still be a relevant starting point in the work with the management group's efficiency, with a focus on trust

Hear the Centaur : A study on the possibilities to use auditory stimulation whilst horse riding in order to raise somatic awareness of the rider

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of using auditory stimulation in order to raise somatic awareness of horse riders while riding using Somaesthetic Appreciation Design as a method. In research of Somaesthetics and horse-human relations, a gap in Somaesthetics is being questioned, and a new dimension is suggested. Somaesthetics in the design of technology often surround the self of a user, and Somaesthetics as described by Shusterman is focused on self development, but many of our experiences are in union to other beings. The suggestion of a new dimension is called Centaur Somaesthetics, and it focuses on the relation and communication between two somas in order to understand and improve oneself.  One example of an experience where the self is dependent to another being is within equestrianism, where the rider is dependent on the horse. Riders, as well as their horses, use their bodies to communicate while riding, meaning that being aware of one's body as a tool for communication is crucial. When horse and rider find harmony within teamwork, the rider may experience a centaur feeling of being one with the horse. This centaur feeling relies on the rider's ability to support and direct the horse, but to do this we need to understand the horse. One of the basics in equestrianism is rhythm and tempo, where a correct rhythm and a consistent tempo in all gaits is desirable as it is a sign of good communication and a well-educated horse. By applying the Somaesthetics principle of raising somatic awareness to understand and improve oneself - this study has explored the possibilities of using audio in combination with the self-tracking application Equilab, using their technology of tracking motion data to determine rhythm and tempo. This has resulted in the concept of using rhythm-adaptive and tempo-flexible music to support the riders to be more aware of their bodies as a tool for communication. The music will present a correct rhythm of the ridden gait as well as it is being played at a consistent tempo of the horse’s natural tempi. While testing a design of the concept called Hear the Centaur, the conclusion of the music having great signs of a heightened somatic awareness was established. No objective data of a more consistent tempo or a more correct rhythm was found, but all riders who participated in the study articulated that they found a great support in the music. All riders found support in the area that they were currently struggling with, and all riders mentioned that the music helped them with their communication to their horse

How does different indigenous yeast strains influence the aroma development and taste during fermentation of apple juice?

There is an increasing interest in locally produced drinks. Consumers demand products with complex taste profiles. Especially when it comes to wine, beer and cider. Several studies have shown that indigenous strains of microorganisms can be used to produce products that’s deemed more complex than the products based on conventional strains. This has led brewers and winemakers to experiment with both the raw material as well as the local microorganisms in order to develop unique products. In this study, three local strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been studied for potential differences regarding aroma development and taste during fermentation of apple juice. The results from the study showed that the different strains generally behaved the same, and that fermentation during three days resulted in greater taste liking compared to seven days

Amazon: Unwelcome Giant?! : a case study on competitive dynamics developed from Amazon's entry into the Swedish market

    No full text
For the last months, the Swedish e-commerce market has experienced impacted competitive dynamics followed by the entrance of the US giant, Amazon. This thesis investigated the competitive dynamics that developed after the entrance of Amazon on the Swedish e-commerce market. The research aimed to accentuate how the competitive dynamics developed, how Amazon was perceived on the Swedish market, and whether it was in fact unwelcome by Swedish firms. Suspicion of the unfamiliar giant resulted in various reactions from the Swedish players. The thesis conducted a case study of the competitive dynamics that developed from Amazon’s entrance into the Swedish market. A conceptual framework based on previous research was constructed to connect essential theories within competitive dynamics. The framework represents an industry’s competitive environment when an actor enters a new market. The empirical data was collected through qualitative research interviews with five Swedish firms operating within the book industry, children product industry, and marketplace industry. Findings showed that competitive dynamics is evidently impacted. The Swedish players are less threatened than expected, and many preparations were in store before the entrance. Findings additionally found that Amazon could help to drive customer consciousness of marketplaces. This thesis has contributed to additional insight in competitive dynamics from a firm perspective.

Where Are the Sows? : A Feminist Reading of George Orwell's Animal Farm

    No full text
This essay argues that the patriarchy is pervasive throughout George Orwell’s novella Animal Farm. By providing examples of narrative events and character actions, the essay aims to make evident the ways in which the patriarchy is represented throughout the novella. The concept of patriarchy is defined, and characters and events that take place within the narrative of Animal Farm are analyzed through the lens of traditional gender roles and toxic masculinity. Both male and female characters are included to present the ways in which society in Animal Farm is patriarchal and the essay argues that the presence of the patriarchy pervades the narrative. The presence of patriarchal structures can be seen throughout the narrative, including characters, character’s actions and how events are portrayed. To conclude, discussing the novella from a feminist theoretical perspective is good for understanding the work in a way that is different from most other analyses in academia and this essay argues that the patriarchy indeed is present throughout the narrative of Animal Farm.

Battling misinformation with a graphic interface : exploring navigation through video to support digital vigilantists

    No full text
Digital vigilantism is a phenomenon that is growing and gaining more popularity (Chia, 2018; Yardley et al., 2016). This practice has in various occasions failed to correctly identify both victims and perpetrators in events surrounding socially undesirable acts(Trottier, 2016; Yardley et al., 2016). This study aims to use Concept driven design research (Stolterman & Wiberg, 2010) to develop a concept that will enhance the precision of the investigative research performed by digital vigilantists. The concept presented in this study is an interactive video player that allows users to navigate through video by interacting directly with objects in the video and enhancing the sense of position and direction. This study results in new insights of aspects to take in mind when creating a concept for this particular target group, this includes the complex ethical aspects that arises when dealing with socially undesirable acts and the public investigation of these.
