Nature’s services and contributions : the relational value of childhood nature experience and the importance of reciprocity

No full text
People depend on functioning ecosystems to meet human needs and support well-being across the life span. This article considers the interest in ecosystem service valuation, the growing interest in the benefits of nature experience for children, and ways to bridge these perspectives. We focus on embodied childhood nature experiences: the physical and multisensory experiences that intertwine child and nature. Additionally, we highlight the reciprocal quality of nature and child experience relationship as an example of how this relationship goes beyond the instrumental and demonstrates relational value. Underlying this perspective is the belief that children need to be better represented in the perception and action of ecosystem valuation in environmental policy

Relationship quality in a digital context : A study of the SME-banking relationship during the Covid-19 pandemic

No full text
The development of the digitalization has resulted in a change from paper-based cash to card and internet payments. This change has made it possible to execute bank related activates all hours of the day and can be performed anywhere. As a result, the physical bank relations are limited and replaced by digital solutions. The on-going pandemic has accelerated the digitalization further, where the digital environment is the new normal. As a result, digitalization today is no longer voluntary but instead a more forced behavior. In order for the banks to retain long term customer relationships, it is critical that the quality is fulfilled despite the digital interactions. To investigate the quality of digital relations within banking, this study examines the quality of the relations together with three influential factors: engagement, trust and satisfaction. Unlike earlier research within this field, this study will apply the quality of the relations in a digital context, which results in an alternative empirical focus. The study investigates SME- bank relations since that is a large and important customer group. Therefore, it is of great interest to examine how SME experience the quality of digital solutions within banks. The method of this study is based on a positivistic philosophy with a deductive approach where the theoretical framework is based on previous research. A quantitative research method is applied to collect the empirical data through internet-based surveys. The result of the study was analyzed based on the answer from 176 respondents. The result shows that trust and satisfaction effects the quality of digital relations between banks and SME.

Fingerfoods, rediscover the pleasure of eating : Simple recipes for meals and snacks

No full text
Are you ready to eat with your fingers? While norms and table manners require the use of cutlery for eating, a part of the consumer population is excluded from this system. With the ageing of the population, the older generation is becoming an increasingly important part of the world's population. It is time to feed them properly. While people over 65 years old are mostly able to use cutlery, not all of them are. Indeed, some people have physical difficulties in handling knives, forks, spoons, and glasses. These problems are mainly motor related and result from a lack of muscle control. The look of others can be difficult for those who do not follow the norm and are forced to eat without cutlery. This leads to social withdrawal and discomfort for many of the people concerned. Fortunately, mentalities can change and it is the role of food professionals to participate in this change. Eating with the fingers can be accepted if the food is easy to handle and not messy. These are the challenges and the ambition of this project. It is not up to the people to adapt but to the food, by being adequate in terms of handling but also in terms of nutritional intake, which must be rich in proteins for this population.Publication type: Recipe brochure.Fingerfoods-recipes for older persons experiencing difficulties in eating with cutlery. The constructive overlap : A study of multiplex ties in students’ study-related networks and academic performance

No full text
This article adds to a growing body of literature on how various types of social relations can work synergistically to promote students’ academic success. Students’ study-related social networks afect academic outcome in higher education. The network literature in education generally explores students’ various relations separately, rather than their multiplex relations or when individuals share several relations. This approach risks missing the full complexity of the student experience. The aim of the present study is to add to the discussion on student social networks and attainment in higher education by further exploring multiplex relations maintained in a specifc study program, in which a large share of students in the cohort commute. A survey was distributed to students in one cohort (n=146). The fndings revealed that, in this cohort, students’ friendship, working and learning networks overlap substantially, and that centrality in the friendship and in the student multiplex networks was positively and signifcantly related to academic outcome, whereas centrality in the working and learning networks was not. Points for future research are suggested, and practical implications for those supporting student learning in higher education are discussed

Impaired oral health in older orthopaedic in-care patients : The influence of medication and morbidity

No full text
Introduction: Fall-related injuries are prevalent in older patients and often lead to increased morbidity, medication, and impaired functions. We studied older trauma patients with the aim to describe their oral health in comparison to morbidity and medication. Material and Methods: The study included 198 patients, ≥65 years, admitted with an orthopedic trauma. Oral examinations included number of natural teeth, dental implants, missing, decayed and restored teeth, root remnants, and pocket depth. Data on comorbidities and medication were assembled. Statistical analyses were carried out with logistic regression models, adjusted for age, gender, comorbidity, and polypharmacy. Results: Overall, 198 patients participated, 71% women, mean age 81 years (±7.9), 85% resided in their own homes, 86% had hip fractures. Chronic diseases and drug use were present in 98.9%, a mean of 6.67 in Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), 40% heart diseases, 17% diabetes, and 14% dementia. Ninety-one percent were dentate (181), mean number of teeth 19.2 (±6.5), 24% had decayed teeth, 97% filled teeth, 44% <20 teeth, and 26% oral dryness. DFT (decayed, filled teeth) over mean were identified in patients with diabetes (p=0.037), COPD (p=0.048), polypharmacy (p=0.011), diuretics (p=0.007), and inhalation drugs (p=0.032). Use of ≥2 strong anticholinergic drugs were observed in patients with <20 teeth and DFT over mean (p=0.004, 0.003). Adjusted for age, gender, CCI, and polypharmacy. Conclusion: The study showed that impaired oral health was prevalent in older trauma patients and that negative effects on oral health were significantly associated with chronic diseases and drug use. The results emphasize the importance of identifying orthogeriatric patients with oral health problems and to stress the necessity to uphold good oral care during a period when functional decline can be expected. This study was supported by grants from the Odontological Research Funds in Region Skåne (OFRS), the Research Platform for Collaboration for Health Kristianstad University and Swedish Dental Hygienists Association. Educational approaches to improve communication skills of learners with autism spectrum disorder and comorbid intellectual disability : An integrative systematic review

No full text
Enabling functional communication is critical for accessibility in school and society for all pupils. This systematic review analyzed the results of educational studies on developing communication skills for learners (<= 21 years) with autism spectrum disorder and comorbid intellectual disability. Systematic database searches were conducted using ERIC, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. Seventeen of 208 peer-reviewed articles in English published between 1990 and 2020 met the inclusion criteria. The analysis identified various educational approaches, ranging from using alternative linguistic tools (e.g., signs and gestures) to physical devices (e.g., visual cues), and also examined instructional approaches used by educators. The synthesis shows heterogeneity of methods used, resulting in weak evidence for any model's impact on this pupil group's communication skills development and concomitant possibilities to affect their school situation. In addition, the analysis demonstrated that personnel performance crucially affects children's opportunities to learn regardless of the approach used. Directions for future research are concluded. This study is part of a research project approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Board (2019-02767) [...]</p

Swedish family care advisors’ views on existential loneliness and existential support to informal caregivers of older people : A cross-sectional national survey

No full text
The number of older people needing care is increasing, and care is often provided by informal caregivers. The mission of family care advisors (FCAs) is to provide them with support; however, whether and how support in existential matters such as existential loneliness is provided is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe FCAs’ views on existential loneliness, and existential support provided to relatives who act as informal caregivers to older people. A national survey was distributed to 349 FCAs in Sweden, response rate n = 120 (36%). The STROBE checklist was followed when presenting the study. Existential loneliness was viewed as thoughts about life and meaning (78%). Existential support was provided by dialogues (87%), visits (75%) and support groups (73%); 45% of FCAs stated that they had time to provide existential support and 27% reported having knowledge of how to encounter existential loneliness. FCAs provide existential support, but often lack experience, knowledge and time. Time and knowledge are important prerequisites for acknowledging existential needs. This study has been supported by grants from Greta and Johan Kock Foundation [2014-231-401] and the Research Platform for Collaboration for Health at Kristianstad University [3/2014]. </p
