Characteristic boundary conditions for hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods

    No full text
In this work we introduce a novel approach to generalized characteristic relaxation boundary conditions (GRCBCs). Our method requires the user to specify Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) number like relaxation factors and recovers commonly used boundary conditions for compressible flow in the context of Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods as a special case. GRCBCs belong to the class of characteristic boundary conditions (CBCs), which are based on the characteristic decomposition of the compressible Euler equations and are designed to prevent the reflection of waves at the domain boundaries. We extend the concept of CBCs within the framework of HDG methods, encompassing both the novel GRCBCs and the well-established Navier-Stokes characteristic boundary conditions (NSCBCs). We show the effectiveness of the proposed method for weakly compressible flows through a series of numerical experiments by comparing the results with common boundary conditions in the HDG setting and reference solutions available in the literature. In particular, HDG with CBCs shows superior performance minimizing the reflection of vortices at artificial boundaries, for both inviscid and viscous flows, due to the inclusion of appropriate tangential and/or viscous contributions into the boundary conditions

The thesis concerns fundamental problems that emerge from the proliferation of devices in increasingly distributed systems. As resources migrate from centralized clouds to a heterogeneous edge-cloud continuum, payloads from inference requests and telemetry required for monitoring overwhelm networks. Existing solutions cannot adequately meet the demanding requirements of edge-cloud systems as they are too complex for adoption, report results that are virtually impossible to reproduce, or do not address root causes. We follow a strict bottom-up approach, focusing on simple methods that yield significant improvements with little effort to integrate into existing systems. A minimally opinionated reference architecture emphasizes legacy compatibility and the importance of observability for automated decision mechanisms, such as scheduling. A rigorous empirical methodology for Machine Learning research in edge-cloud systems demonstrates the importance of simplicity when designing methods that are expected to run in complex systems. A training algorithm and novel knowledge distillation approach for task-agnostic compression achieves significant rate reductions, outperforming even the most competitive baseline. The base model consists of an encoder with just 140,000 parameters and is efficient enough for the latency penalty from the encoding and decoding overhead to be more than offset by the reduced transmission costs. An extension handles networks where connectivity is only intermittently available and throughput is favored, increasing downlinkable data volume by over two orders of magnitude. Finally, a method that augments algorithms for constructing statistical summaries for monitoring improves their coding efficiency. The augmentation provably maintains the base algorithm's underlying mathematical guarantees and compatibility with legacy systems. Together, the contributions establish a principled foundation for scalable, transparent, and coding-efficient systems that recover and transmit only the most salient information under stringent constraints for emerging paradigms in distributed computing

Energy-Efficient Biochar Activation in a Fluidized Bed Reactor Using CO₂–Air Mixed Atmospheres

    No full text
Biochar activation is critical for producing high-performance adsorbents; however, conventional activation methods are energy-intensive and difficult to control, particularly when air is used as an activating agent. This study investigates CO₂–air co-activation in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor as an energy-efficient alternative. Experiments were conducted at 750–850 ◦C under varying gas flow rates with a constant CO₂/O₂ ratio. Optimal properties were achieved at 800 ◦C and 0.2–0.3 L/min CO₂, yielding a maximum BET surface area of 479 m2/g, a micropore contribution of 42%, and controlled carbon conversion (~25–35% yield). Aspen Plus equilibrium simulations also confirm that CO₂-only activation remains endothermic (heat duty up to +0.07 kW), air-only activation becomes strongly exothermic (down to −0.13 kW), while the CO₂–air mixture exhibits near-thermoneutral to mildly exothermic behavior (+0.13 to −0.10 kW), thereby reducing external energy demand potentially by approximately 60–70% compared with CO₂-only activation and significantly improving process stability. These results demonstrate that CO₂–air co-activation offers a practical route to produce high-quality activated biochar with controlled porosity and improved energy efficiency

Equilibration of objective observables in a dynamical model of quantum measurements

The challenge of understanding quantum measurement persists as a fundamental issue in modern physics. Particularly, the abrupt and energy-nonconserving collapse of the wave function appears to contradict classical thermodynamic laws. The contradiction can be resolved by considering measurement itself to be an entropyincreasing process, driven by the second law of thermodynamics. One such resolution explains the apparently irreversible emergence of objective outcomes in an isolated, unitarily evolving quantum system via the theory of closed-system equilibration. Working within this framework, we construct the set of “objectifying observables” that best encode the measurement statistics of a system in an objective manner and establish a measurement error bound to quantify the probability an observer will obtain an incorrect measurement outcome. Using this error bound, we show that the objectifying observables readily equilibrate on average under the set of Hamiltonians which preserve the outcome statistics on the measured system. Using a random matrix model for this set, we numerically determine the measurement error bound, finding that the error only approaches zero with increasing environment size when the environment is coarse grained into so-called observer systems. This indicates the necessity of coarse graining an environment for the emergence of objective, classical measurement outcomes

Tribological contacts are major contributors to global energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions, primarily due to frictional losses and wear-induced component failure. Enhancing the efficiency and durability of these contacts is of significant technological interest, especially in scenarios where conventional liquid lubricants are ineffective or impractical. Among emerging solid lubricants, two-dimensional transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have garnered considerable attention. Their layered structure, tuneable surface chemistry, and advantageous tribological properties render them promising candidates. Although Ti3C2Tx MXenes have been extensively studied, Nb2CTx MXenes and hybrid combinations of various MXene compositions remain relatively unexplored. This thesis investigates the tribological behaviour of hybrid Ti3C2Tx–Nb2CTx MXene coatings and evaluates the influence of fabrication and consolidation strategies on coating stability and durability. The research emphasises binder-free processing routes to enhance coating performance through fabrication optimisation rather than chemical modification. Hybrid coatings with defined mass ratios (25:75, 50:50, and 75:25 Ti3C2Tx:Nb2CTx), along with single-MXene reference coatings, were deposited on mirror-polished X5CrNi18-10 (1.4301) stainless-steel substrates. Deposition methods included air-spraying and drop-casting, followed by cold- and hot-pressing as consolidation steps.Coating morphology and structural integrity were characterised using laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, complemented by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Tribological testing involved linear reciprocating sliding experiments against an Al2O3 counterbody at a normal load of 1 N, corresponding to a maximum Hertzian contact pressure of approximately 0.7 GPa. These conditions represent more demanding wear and contact-pressure regimes than those typically reported in MXene tribology and were chosen to assess coating adhesion and tribofilm stability. The results indicate that coating adhesion and structural integrity are the primary factors determining durability and lifetime, while coating thickness plays a secondary role. Hybrid coatings, particularly those containing Nb2CTx, exhibited greater stability than single-MXene coatings. Mechanical consolidation proved critical; pre-compacted coatings, such as drop-cast layers followed by cold or hot pressing, demonstrated enhanced resistance to failure under high contact pressures. These findings establish that fabrication and consolidation strategies alone can improve tribological performance, offering a systematic foundation for the development of binder-free MXene-based lubricants suitable for demanding conditions

Building analysis applications across architectural and engineering domains, including architectural design, building systems engineering, life safety engineering, and construction management, rely on accurate and specific space classification data. Currently, building analysis software end users mostly enter such classification data manually. Manual entry of classification data poses various challenges. It is prone to errors, leading to inaccurate analysis. It is time-consuming and significantly slows the analysis process, particularly for large buildings. Therefore, automating space classification is desirable. This dissertation explores existing and emerging machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods for automating space classification tasks. The focus is on classifying space functions and space access elements, such as doors and accessible openings, across entire floors of apartment buildings. To achieve the research goal, a methodology based on a five-step ML and DL workflow was applied across three studies that examine different aspects of space classification using ML and DL. The workflow consists of problem formulation, data collection, pre-processing, model construction, and model evaluation. In the first study, a multi-view image dataset was created to develop image deep learning (IDL) semantic segmentation models for multi-view space function classification. Results show that the predictive performance was higher for the multi-view than the single-view approach, indicating that the former may better capture the shapes of spaces and space elements. Performance was sensitive to view direction, implying view bias. However, view bias decreased as the number of views increased. Contextual space elements, such as windows and doors, were found to be important for enhancing classification accuracy. A post-processing algorithm was developed to convert pixel labels into space-level classes, facilitating the reuse of space function classification data in BIM applications. In the second study, a dataset with tabular and graph representation formats was created to compare ML and graph deep learning models (GDL), including a novel extended GDL model (eEdgeGAT), for space function and space access element classification. Results show that, among GDL models, those with attention mechanisms and featured relationships had the highest predictive performance. Among ML models, tree-based ML models significantly outperformed other models, indicating a hierarchical feature structure and feature interactions. Further analysis indicates that certain features and relationships of spaces and space access elements were particularly important for predictive performance. Prediction time scaled linearly for ML and non-linearly for GDL models. In the third study, a multimodal dataset with tabular, graph, and multi-view image data formats was created to benchmark five classification methods for space function and space access element classification. Results reveal that GDL models achieved the highest predictive performance. Specifically, HGAT, a novel heterophilic and heterogeneous graph attention network, had the best performance. Feature and relationship analysis for the top-performing ML and GDL models confirmed findings from the second study. Results further show that GDL models required fewer training parameters, less pre-processing, and shorter training times than IDL, natural language processing, and generative models. ML models were less accurate than IDL models but had fewer trainable parameters, shorter training times, and fewer pre- and no post-processing requirements. The overall contributions of this dissertation to space classification research include: i) the systematic exploration and benchmarking of existing and emerging ML and DL methods; ii) the expansion of the spatial scope from single functional units to entire floors with multiple units comprised of spaces and space access elements; and iii) the creation of a multimodal and diverse dataset that supports the development and benchmarking of space classification models.

The strong growth of cyanobacteria can lead to the formation of algal blooms. Reports of severe algal blooms, driven, among other factors, by increasing nutrient loads in aquatic systems and presumably by climate change, have risen sharply. Algal blooms can pose significant economic, ecological, and health risks. For this reason, monitoring cyanobacteria at high frequency is important for efficiently managing water resources and ecosystems. One method frequently employed for this purpose is fluorescence-based in situ measurement of cyanobacteria. This review on fluorescence-based in situ measurements identifies numerous sources of interference that adversely affect the measurements. However, a quantitative ranking cannot be derived from the literature. In some cases, these disturbances lead to fluorescence-probe measurements representing only an estimate of the cyanobacteria concentration. Various compensation methods are identified and described, although more holistic approaches are lacking. Nevertheless, when properly applied, fluorescence probes demonstrate significant potential, for instance as early-warning systems in risk management or as components of cyanobacteria forecasting models. Moreover, this work establishes an experimental and conceptual foundation for the further development of an optical probe into a fluorescence-based probe for in situ cyanobacteria measurements. It focuses on systematic initial development steps, in particular the evaluation of the fundamental suitability of existing optical probe systems for fluorescence excitation and detection. For this purpose, prototypes are tested under laboratory conditions using the fluorophores Rhodamine WT, Uranine and Pyranine. The results show that, in its current configuration, Sensor 1, which utilises a broadband xenon flash lamp, is not suitable for the intended application, as the weak fluorescence signal is likely masked by the lamp spectrum, rendering it indistinguishable. Sensor 2 uses an LED as light source and, in combination with an external detector, enables reliable excitation and detection of fluorescence. This work demonstrates the pronounced influence of the light source and measurement geometry on fluorescence detectability and provides an outlook on further steps required in sensor development

Bottom Up Change via Issue Selling: A qualitative case study in public sector organizations

    No full text
Organizational change is often portrayed as a top-down process. However, bottom-up initiatives – originating from employees, teams, or middle management – play a vital role in driving innovation and renewal. This dissertation explores how such initiatives gain traction through issue selling, the strategic process of drawing attention to and legitimizing new concerns within organizations. The study investigates how bottom-up impulses in established organizations achieve resonance and effect change through issue selling. Special emphasis is placed on the interaction between formal hierarchies and coalitions, which emerges as a key mechanism influencing the success or failure of such initiatives. To examine this, an embedded qualitative single-case study was conducted within an Austrian public administration, focusing on a project team tasked with implementing centralized facility management. The empirical dataset comprises 26 interviews, observations from 17 team meetings, over 150 pages of internal documentation, and eight debriefings with project leadership. Four contrasting episodes – representing both successful and failed issue-selling efforts – were analyzed inductively to develop dynamic process models. The findings reveal that (1) trust functions as a cross-episodic social resource, emerging from consistent behavior and repeated, positive interaction; (2) private and public arenas serve distinct yet complementary roles as strategic interaction spaces; and (3) change initiatives succeed when social dynamics (e.g., coalitions, relationships) and substantive contributions (e.g., problem-solving, expertise) reinforce one another. The study concludes that issue selling is best understood as a socially embedded, dynamic process that enables bottom-up change within structurally complex organizations. It offers practical implications for leadership, organizational development, and human resource management – highlighting the importance of strengthening individual issue-selling competencies, supporting strategic intermediaries, and fostering open communication and transparent decision-making structures

Reconfigurable field effect transistors (RFETs) based on Schottky contacts offer polarity control enabling runtime NMOS/PMOS switching without channel doping and therefore represent a promising device concept for compact, adaptive, and energy efficient electronic systems. Germanium on silicon on insulator (GeSOI) provides improved carrier injection but requires optimized contact engineering to achieve symmetric electron and hole injection. This work investigates the technological evolution, electrical behavior, and circuit functionality of the second and third generation of Al-Si-Ge multi-heterojunction RFETs based on the GeSOI platform. The study combines fabrication improvements with an extended characterization methodology. Solid-state exchange based Al-Si-Ge multi-heterojunction contacts and a SiO2/ZrO2 gate stack were implemented to improve symmetry and electrostatic control. Automated DC and transient measurements, including multidimensional large parameter sweeps, were performed to evaluate transfer characteristics, on-to-off ratios, temperature stability, and circuit performance. Several circuit configurations were realized, including complementary inverters, common source and common drain amplifiers, and a reconfigurable transmission gate. The results show a clear progression from the first generation devices toward symmetric and high performance RFET circuits. The third generation achieves nearly balanced conduction in both, the NMOS and PMOS mode, with Ipon/In on improving from 4.1 in the first generation to ≈ 0.88 and on-to-off ratios of approximately six decades. Common source amplifier gains increased from near unity in early devices to values around 10 in the third generation, while common drain gains reached up to 0.75 with stable operating points. The transmission gate demonstrates correct bidirectional switching, tunable attenuation, and reproducible transient behavior, with an effective resistance adjustable from the GΩ to the 100 kΩ range. These findings establish the third generation GeSOI RFET as a robust platform for reconfigurable analog and mixed signal circuits. The demonstrated gain tunability, symmetric operation, and bidirectional transmission capability highlight the versatility of RFET based architectures. Remaining challenges include charge trapping effects and limited dynamic performance, which may be addressed through improved passivation, optimized dielectrics, and enhanced measurement integration. The results provide a foundation for the development of more complex reconfigurable circuits and adaptive electronic systems based on RFET technology
