High-purity hydrogen production from bark mulch via advanced dual fluidized bed steam gasification

    No full text
This study experimentally investigates high-purity hydrogen production via steam gasification of bark mulch pellets. A 100 kWth advanced dual fluidized bed gasifier is coupled with a pilot-scale process chain for product gas cleaning, conditioning, and hydrogen purification. The applied water–gas shift unit processes sulfur- and tar-containing product gas downstream of the gasifier. Measuring the gas composition along the catalyst bed height reveals that a catalyst amount reduction by 32 % is reasonable, as the water–gas shift reaction was not kinetically limited. X-ray photoelectron spectra of the unused and spent samples show that small amounts of sulfur and carbon deposited on the catalyst's surface. As carbon deposition from carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons is not possible from a thermodynamic perspective, the presence of tar compounds could have led to a carbon laydown. The obtained hydrogen purity downstream of the pressure swing adsorption unit is ≥99.971 vol-% with a hydrogen recovery and yield of 75.3 % and 48.5 gH2 kg⁻¹BM.db, respectively

Are we ready to plan for synergies? System Integration Impact Assessment in the Austrian energy system modelling community

    No full text
Integrated solutions across processes, sectors, and systems can deliver value that exceeds the sum of their parts. Sector coupling, for example, is increasingly recognized as a key enabler for balancing intermittent renewable electricity, while creating new interdependencies and systemic risks. Yet, the capacity of energy system models to anticipate such synergies and trade-offs remains uneven. This article presents a structured review of Austria's energy system modelling landscape, mapping over 800 publications from 54 research groups. We classify modelling capacities across technical, temporal, and spatial integration dimensions and identify significant gaps in areas such as bioenergy, circularity, and extreme event modelling, alongside promising advances in heating networks, electricity sector coupling, and energy communities. The growing attention to operational flexibility in long-term models offers a window of opportunity to better anticipate shocks, structural breaks, and resilience considerations. The openly shared integration fitness tables derived from this review aim to foster collaboration and capacity-building across modelling silos. We argue that advancing System Integration Impact Assessment requires uncertainty-aware modelling frameworks capable of capturing synergies, trade-offs, and systemic risks. Embracing uncertainty rather than reducing it can help design transformation pathways that are not only sustainable but also robust and flexible. Ultimately, this shift could bring together environmental and economic efficiency, safety, and security into a shared paradigm, elevating sustainable development toward reliable development

Excelling in sports, especially combat sports, requires precise technical execution to enhance performance, reduce injury risk, and achieve tactical advantage. Technique analysis plays a key role in improving athletic performance by identifying flaws and informing training. However, manual technique analysis is time-consuming and requires expert input. While existing research has explored automated technique analysis using 3D video recordings, such systems rely on expensive equipment that is impractical for daily training. Recent advancements in pose detection now offer the potential for automated analysis based on 2D videos, which can be conveniently recorded using a smartphone. This research presents the design, development, and evaluation of a web application that provides automated analysis of user-uploaded 2D videos. The system was developed using state-of-the-art research and requirements gathered from a subject matter expert in kickboxing and karate kumite. It supports two pose detection models, MoveNet and OpenPose. The system was evaluated using a dataset of 3D and 2D videos featuring 44 athletes of varying competitive levels performing the double side kick technique. Agreement between the 2D-based and 3D-based analyses from a preliminary study was assessed using Bland-Altman plots. The evaluation showed strong agreement between the 2D and 3D analyses. The analysis using the OpenPose model displayed slightly better results than the analysis using the MoveNet model. The analysis using the OpenPose model showed a mean difference of <0.04s for relative phase durations, <15° for joint angles, and <13% for relative body position characteristics. These results indicate that the web application has the potential to serve as an inexpensive and practical tool for athletes in their daily training

Ion stopping force from Bohmian mechanics

    No full text
We employed Bohmian mechanics to solve the equations of motion for a charged particle traveling in a free electron gas. Quantum effects are accounted for by including the Bohm quantum-mechanical potential Q, which depends on the electronic density, in the typical classical description. Our approach provides a computationally efficient alternative to traditional quantum calculations for determining the electronic stopping force of charged particles in matter. We use this framework to investigate the stopping of fast protons and slow highly charged xenon ions in the free electron gas. For highly charged ions, we predict the stopping force as a function of the projectile charge exchange

The Implications of the Surface – Tactility and Spatial Perception

Architecture unfolds its effect where material, surface, and atmosphere become a sensually perceptible context. This thesis addresses the question of how spatial mood is formed from the relationship between near and distant senses, from polarities of surface, and from the legibility of intention and treatment. Based on a theoretical examination of perception, material traces, and the concept of architectural credibility, the thesis develops a design approach that does not depict atmosphere, but rather produces it spatially. The design of the bistro, kitchen, and bar implements this approach in three different but thematically related spaces. Each space formulates its own emphasis on sensuality, function, and density: the bistro as a place of concentrated perception and comfort, the kitchen as the brightest and most process- and work-oriented space, and the bar as the smallest and most intense setting, where spatial density and polarities are most clearly accentuated. The three spaces are related in terms of content, but differ in their atmospheric requirements and together form a sequence of different states. In summary, the work shows how atmosphere arises from the coherence of material, use, and time. Surfaces do not appear as an afterthought, but as carriers of intention, work, and use, in which the relationship between people and space is inscribed in all its depth

Misogyny and Disregard: The ‘Sentimental, Pretending Erudite, Ugly Prussian Countess Poninski-Dohna’, Author of the First Urban Planning Treatise in Germany

    No full text
In 1874, the social reformer and urban planning theorist Adelheid Gräfin von Poninska (1804 –1881) published her treatise Die Großstädte in ihrer Wohnungsnoth. This was not only the first in-depth treatise on the housing question in Germany, but also the first urban planning handbook to be published there. Poninska’s study, which was based on a systematic, holistic and relational approach had a clear theoretical claim. In her treatise she constructed an integral theoretical framework on the question of the advantageous layout of modern, industrialised large cities. This systemic overall view of the phenomenon of the large city and its planning broke new technical and political ground and contributed significantly to the scientific strengthening of the still fledgling discipline of urban planning
