Solutions to Homelessness Through Architecture
No full textThis project re-envisions transitional housing and addresses issues of homelessness by incorporating principles of sustainability and material reuse to achieve optimal affordability both in terms of construction costs and cost of living for the users. The program includes opportunities for work for its residents as well as funding for the project itself, while also offering resources that facilitate the transition of unhoused individuals back into society.
The modular units being utilized are shipping containers, which can be assembled in different configurations to accommodate different needs within the design. The use of recycled materials further saves on construction costs and also reduces the environmental impact of the building. Additionally, the design thoughtfully incorporates intertwining passive systems.
Also included are communal spaces designed to encourage social interaction; spaces for social, mental, and physical health services; and community gardens with access to essential resources to foster a sense of community and support. Unhoused individuals not committed to this housing framework are still encouraged to inhabit spaces throughout the site which offers locations for sheltering around and under the building. All of these concepts will work in tandem as means to provide more ways to welcome the underserved, as opposed to pushing them away.Thesis (B. Arch.)College of Architecture and Plannin
Branch Day Center and Shelter
No full textArchitectural design has the opportunity to change what shelters could be for the city and the unhoused population. The Branch Day Center & Shelter focuses on utilizing design to positively guide the dynamic between the unhoused community and the rest of society, offering sustainable design to elevate the building into the surrounding context, and providing a network throughout the city for the unhoused community. All of this is aimed to change the stigma that is associated with the unhoused population and the way they interact with the rest of society by creating a beautiful piece of architecture that also programmatically creates change. The Branch Day Center & Shelter programs are meant to be a start into the existing network of helping tools within Indianapolis for the unhoused population and it also provides 24-hour shelter, supportive housing, and permanent housing for families and women. As this is an addition to the existing network this would hopefully be set as a precedent to improve and renovate the existing shelters and programs that are throughout the city.Thesis (B. The prince: an opera in one act: an analysis of the compositional process
No full textThe Prince: An Opera in One Act, scored from a libretto by Jakob Harding, is a loose adaptation of Niccolò Machiavelli’s 16th-century political treatise of the same name. My Creative Project, partially fulfilling the requirements for a Master of Music degree in Composition, comprises the first act of this four-act work. The libretto follows the president of an unnamed Western nation who embodies the harsh authoritative traits of rulers in the sixteenth century. Aiding in his administration is a cabinet of advisors and employees that, while assisting the president with his governance, also have their own agendas that they will pursue, even if they run counter to that of the president. The cast consists of the President Oliver Lewis, Vice President Maxine, Press Secretary Nicholas, National Security Advisor Lucius, and Secretary to the President Catrina. This cabal of characters is faced with a national crisis that, exacerbated by their ill-thought-out decisions, quickly grows out of their control into domestic unrest. The work is written for five vocalists; a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, two tenors, and a baritone, each of whom may play side characters along with their main roles. The work also includes ten
instrumentalists; flute, Bb clarinet, Eb alto saxophone, two French horns in F, tuba, piano, and two percussionists which together play snare drum, bass drum, xylophone, and vibraphone. The piece uses specific key centers and pitch collections to portray the moral and political stances of each cabinet member, musically pitting them against each other as the characters on stage engage in heated policy arguments.M. The perfomance practice of Richard Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder
No full textThis project has presented an overview of the Wesendonck-Lieder and the performance practice that coincides with the song cycle. The songs provide a challenge, of which there has been minimal research on how to conquer the difficulty in each movement. It is important to note the text and how Wagner meticulously arranged the music to encompass the meaning of the words. While there are numerous performances of the lieder cycle, there is a limited amount of research on the performance practice of this cycle. This makes listening to recordings a crucial necessity to be familiar with the general flow of the songs. Different interpretations are needed to familiarize the general performance practices used whenever this cycle is sung.M. M
Queering the love interest: manic pixie dream girls, gender archetypes, and heteronormativity
No full textAs the romantic comedy has evolved through indie cinema in the 2000s, a new character trope
has seen a huge surge of use, popularity, and backlash: the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, or MPDG.
Through three key films in the MPDG canon, Garden State (2004), (500) Days of Summer
(2009), and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), this thesis explores the meaning of the trope as
well as its implications on modern pop culture and gender relations. Integral to this is an analysis
of the MPDG and her relationship to her protagonist informed by queer theory and feminist

Closing the gap: an analysis of women in mathematics
No full textMathematics is one of the most important subjects that helps us understand the world. To
continue to excel through science, engineering, and other fields, there must be a mathematical
foundation. This paper provides a historical overview of the role of women in mathematics,
highlighting their contributions and challenges faced. We discuss the underrepresentation of
women in math-related fields and analyze the factors that discourage girls from pursuing careers
in mathematics. Finally, we present strategies to encourage young girls to develop an interest in
mathematics and increase their participation in this field. The goal is to inspire and motivate the

Le Chastoiement des Dames by Robert de Blois, from the original Old French to modern
English. This text deals with proper courtly conduct for women, through the lens of finding love.
Providing 756 lines of advice, Robert instructs women on how to present themselves, behave
themselves, and approach social situations with men. To contextualize my translation, I also
wrote an essay discussing medieval courtesy texts and their significance to women. Looking at
the Chastoiement, as well as some other similar texts, I discussed how perception of women

Disparities black women face from police officers when reporting domestic violence
No full textIt can already be hard being a woman. Try being a Black woman. There are many women that
identify with this intersectionality. Factors like race and economic status can make it very hard
for Black women to go in the world and live their lives without unbiased treatment. This is felt
by Black women especially when reporting domestic violence to the police. Women in general
face disparities that place them in an uncomfortable situation where police often antagonize them
just because they are women. One in four women experience intimate partner violence, whether
that is sexual or physical abuse by their partners (Truman, et al., 2014). Many fail to report these
types of encounters because of past experiences from officers. Black women especially face
biases and stereotypes from police when reporting victimization. I analyze the research on
women’s experiences with the police, Black women’s experiences with the police, and
recommendations to improve police responses to Black women victims of intimate partner
violence. Though not all officers will know first-hand what it is like to be a Black woman, an
understanding that a sense of protection, hope, and even justice could go a long way for women,

Evaluating bat response to human-altered landscape in a midwestern river corridor: an abundance modeling analysis using bioacoustics
No full textBats face numerous conservation challenges across the United States including wind energy development, the spread of white-nose syndrome, and habitat loss. Human alterations to natural environments can impact the presence of bats. How habitat alterations affect different bat species is not clearly known. Our goal is to examine bat use across a gradient of habitats altered by humans. During the 21-22 summer seasons, we used acoustic detectors to survey a variety of sites to examine bat response to the human-altered habitats along the White River corridor in Delaware County, IN. To ensure sampling occurred across a range of habitat types, we created an a priori model categorizing 1-km long sections of habitat into five habitat groups based on habitat structure and human influence. Wildlife Acoustics SM4+ echolocation detectors were used to collect acoustic data at each of the 30 sites for three nights twice each summer. Habitat and environmental covariates were measured using artificial light measurements, field observation data, and ArcGIS Pro. Calls were analyzed using Kaleidoscope and BCID software along with manual identification based on species rarity and call structure attributes. We conducted a Dail-Madsen N-mixture modeling analysis to estimate call abundance and detection probabilities to evaluate the effects of habitat structure on bat use. Species abundance exhibited a wide variety of responses to urban variables. Prominently,
Myotis species exhibit an extreme negative relationship with even low levels of artificial light. Most of our species models, whether a forest-obligate or a generalist species, predicted that higher levels of riverbank canopy percentage yield an increased abundance of bats, suggesting that forests and forest-edges are an essential resource for urban bat communities. Our aim is to gain a better understanding of species-specific habitat requirements for struggling bat populations and aid future management decisions regarding the effects of land development on bats.Thesis (M.
