    Variations in performance: how the theme and variations form can be used to teach horn pedagogical techniques

    The following paper discusses the role of the theme and variations form in horn performance and pedagogy. It analyses four pieces by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1804), Franz Strauss (1822-1905), and David Amram (1930) and how they can be used to teach specific pedagogical and technical skills to horn players. The paper begins by discussing the role the introduction plays in two of the pieces before analyzing different forms that can be used within the variations of the pieces. The section pays close attention to how the form of the movement transforms the thematic material of the piece and how a player can benefit from practicing them. The second section focuses on variations that alter the meter and subdivision of a theme. These allow players to better learn specific rhythmic patterns and ideas by building off prior knowledge learned from the theme. The third section discusses two different methods used by horn player to double tongue a triplet rhythm during a performance. It weighs the benefits and drawbacks of each one while providing a specific example in which they can be implemented in one of the pieces. The fourth section deals with different styles of articulation and how they are shaped by a player’s attacks and releases. It uses the Beethoven to demonstrate how style and phrasing use articulation to create a greater effect in the performance of a piece. The last section focuses on the Amram and discusses the techniques used in jazz horn playing, as well as several advanced horn techniques used throughout the variations. By analyzing the ways in which the theme and variations form uses its variations to alter its theme, this paper proves how the form is a valuable tool for teaching pedagogical techniques to students.M.     Study on U.S. Parents’ Divisions of Labor During COVID-19: Wave 4

    The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered family life in the United States. Over the long duration of the pandemic, parents had to adapt to shifting work conditions, virtual schooling, the closure of daycare facilities, and the stress of not only managing households without domestic and care supports but also worrying that family members may contract the novel coronavirus. Reports early in the pandemic suggest that these burdens have fallen disproportionately on mothers, creating concerns about the long-term implications of the pandemic for gender inequality and mothers’ well-being. Nevertheless, less is known about how parents’ engagement in domestic labor and paid work has changed throughout the pandemic and beyond, what factors may be driving these changes, and what the long-term consequences of the pandemic may be for the gendered division of labor and gender inequality more generally. The Study on U.S. Parents’ Divisions of Labor During COVID-19 (SPDLC) collects longitudinal survey data from partnered U.S. parents that can be used to assess changes in parents’ divisions of domestic labor, divisions of paid labor, and well-being throughout and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of SPDLC is to understand both the short- and long-term impacts of the pandemic for the gendered division of labor, work-family issues, and broader patterns of gender inequality. Survey data for this study is collected using Prolific (www.prolific.com), an opt-in online platform designed to facilitate scientific research. The sample is comprised U.S. adults who were residing with a romantic partner and at least one biological child (at the time of entry into the study). In each survey, parents answer questions about both themselves and their partners. Wave 1 of the SPDLC was conducted in April 2020, and parents who participated in Wave 1 were asked about their division of labor both prior to (i.e., early March 2020) and one month after the pandemic began. Wave 2 of the SPDLC was collected in November 2020. Parents who participated in Wave 1 were invited to participate again in Wave 2, and a new cohort of parents was also recruited to participate in the Wave 2 survey. Wave 3 of SPDLC was collected in October 2021. Parents who participated in either of the first two waves were invited to participate again in Wave 3, and another new cohort of parents was also recruited to participate in the Wave 3 survey. Wave 4 of the SPDLC was collected in October 2022. Parents who participated in either of the first three waves were invited to participate again in Wave 4, and another new cohort of parents was also recruited to participate in the Wave 4 survey. Wave 5 of the SPDLC was collected in October 2023. Parents who participated in any of the first four waves were invited to participate again in Wave 5, and another new cohort of parents was also recruited to participate in the Wave 5 survey. This research design (follow-up survey of panelists and new cross-section of parents at each wave) will continue through 2024, culminating in six waves of data spanning the period from March 2020 through October 2024. An estimated total of approximately 6,500 parents will be surveyed at least once throughout the duration of the study. SPDLC data will be released to the public two years after data is collected; Waves 1-4 are currently publicly available. Wave 5 will be publicly available in October 2025, with subsequent waves becoming available yearly. Data will be available to download in both SPSS (.sav) and Stata (.dta) formats, and the following data files will be available: (1) a data file for each individual wave, which contains responses from all participants in that wave of data collection, (2) a longitudinal panel data file, which contains longitudinal follow-up data from all available waves, and (3) a repeated cross-section data file, which contains the repeated cross-section data (from new respondents at each wave) from all available waves. Codebooks for each survey wave and a detailed user guide describing the data are also available

    Illumination: a comparative analysis of LED lights vs. older style lighting instruments

    Over the past several years LED lights have taken over film sets and productions. It is common knowledge that LEDs are much more efficient lights, but do they outperform their predecessors? This study was a look into how modern LED lights compare to older lighting styles like tungsten and HMI lights. This study had two ways to analyze the differences; light data recorded from a spectrometer, and two, 4 filmed scenes where the only difference between the scenes is the lights while everything else was identical. The expectations are that the older lighting styles, with tungsten in particular looking better visually, as well as having better color fidelity, and that LEDs would have much better practicality and efficiency. The hypothesis was correct after the lights were put through a series of tests. LED lights are the future of filmmaking, even though they do not outperform their predecessors visually. The range, adaptability, and usage make the use of LEDs justified, though at a cost aesthetically.M. A

    Bismuth-based MOFs/BiVO4 heterojunction photocatalysts for visible light-driven degradation of emerging organic contaminants

    Emerging organic contaminants, e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, hormones, surfactants, flame retardants, and plasticizers, are leading causes of environmental pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intricate structures of metal ions interconnected by organic linkers have emerged as a new class of high surface area materials with a potential for a wide range of applications. Bismuth-based metal oxides have demonstrated great promise in the visible light-activated catalytic degradation of emerging organic pollutants. In this project, we describe the synthesis and characterization of Bi-MOF/BiVO4 heterostructured photocatalysts with high surface area for the degradation of emerging organic contaminants. Bi-MOFs (CAU-17) were prepared hydrothermal, using trimesic acid as the organic linker and Bi(NO3)3•5H2O as the bismuth ion precursor. The Bi-MOF/BiVO4 heterostructured photocatalyst was synthesized by reacting a specific amount of CAU-17 with NH4VO3 in water at 80°C for 24 h. The composition, size, morphology, surface area, and structure of the new materials were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Thermogravimetric analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The Bi-MOF/BiVO4 heterostructured nanostructures exhibited a surface area almost seven times greater than the original BiVO4. The photocatalysis of Rhodamine B (a model contaminant) by the Bi-MOFs/BiVO4 nanocomposite shows significant degradation of the dye in 55 min, whereas the pristine BiVO4 takes over 80 min. The Bi-MOFs/BiVO4 nanocomposite and BiVO4 photocatalyst were employed in the degradation of aqueous solutions of glyphosate under visible LED light irradiation. Glyphosate and AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid) were analyzed using HPLC with a fluorescence detector after derivatization with FMOC-Cl (9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl chloride) to evaluate the activity of the photocatalysts. Here, the reversed-phase amino column was used as the stationary phase, and the mixture of phosphate buffer pH 5.8 and acetonitrile as a mobile phase. The results showed that Bi-MOFs/BiVO4 degraded glyphosate sustainably much faster than demonstrated by pure BiVO4. This increase in catalytic efficiency might be attributed to the heterojunction between Bi-MOFs and BiVO4 and the high surface area of the material. Such results present a new class of high surface area photocatalysts to achieve sustainable remediation of organic contaminants.M. S

    According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) as of 2023, approximately 50 million Americans have some sort of disorder or deficit in their speech, language, and/or hearing skills that impacts their overall communication. Because communication disorders are so prevalent, it is beneficial to increase awareness of this type of disorder. Additionally, ASHA states that two out of every ten children experience some sort of speech or hearing disorder. With this in mind, it is important to increase awareness of communication disorders as early as possible.     Hancuffed by harm from the binds of bias?: judgment and decision-making differences between BDSM and law enforcement communities

    Bondage, Discipline, Dominance/Submission, and Sado-Masochism (BDSM) is often perceived through a lens of misinformed and inaccurate representations in media, which then becomes the most salient knowledge base for BDSM in individuals who do not identify within the community. The saliency of this information could cause judgment errors in situations that rely on differentiating between consensual activities and acts of violence or abuse, such as those encountered by law enforcement, and have negative ramifications for the BDSM community (e.g., arrest, loss of child custody). A 2 (identity group: BDSM, Law Enforcement) x 3 (boundary violation: Absent, Present, Ambiguous) factorial design was implemented to investigate differences in judgment related to perception beliefs (e.g., consent was violated, limits were respected) and anticipated outcomes (e.g., arrest, loss of child custody; PBAO) of law enforcement (N = 76) and BDSM community members (N = 74) across varying levels of consent/boundary violations (approximated in the content of three vignettes). Two pilot studies were conducted to provide validation of the vignettes and dependent variable measure. In the main study, participants were randomly assigned one of three vignettes, then they responded to ten items regarding their judgment of whether a consent violation had occurred and what sociolegal consequences were anticipated (PBAO). To account for between-group differences, attitude toward BDSM was included as a covariate. Results identified significant differences in PBAO between law enforcement and BDSM practitioners, such that law enforcement endorsed significantly higher PBAO across vignette condition compared to BDSM practitioners. These findings supported hypothesis 1. Results further indicated a significant between-group difference in attitude about BDSM, with more negative attitudes endorsed by the law enforcement sample. Furthermore, the significant effects of attitude about BDSM accounted for between-group differences in PBAO scores, lending support for hypothesis 2.Ph. D

    Investigating the role of BCL-xL IN T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Each year in the United States, around 6540 people between the ages of 1 and 19 are diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is comprised of subtypes, which include B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). B-ALL predominates, accounting for 85% of all cases, while T-ALL represents 10-15% of pediatric and 25% of adult ALL cases. T-ALL is an early-stage lymphoid disorder found primarily in the bone marrow, mediastinum, central nervous system, and lymphoid organs. Additionally, T-ALL patients show poor response to chemotherapy. Only a subset of patients achieve completerecovery with chemotherapy and only 50% survive beyond 5 years. T-ALL is mostly initiated by ectopic expression of TAL-1 gene. Normally, this gene encodes a transcription factor that controls other genes important to blood cell development. However, it is thought that TAL-1 can affect the expression pattern of BCL-xL. BCL-xL is an anti-apoptotic protein that is important in the survival and proliferation of cells. This protein negatively regulates the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane and the release of cytochrome C to prevent apoptosis. To study T-ALL in a cell-based system, the Jurkat cell line provides an ideal model since TAL-1 is abnormally expressed in these cells. First, we wanted to determine if BCL-xL expression increases or Western blot analysis that BCL-xL expression increased as etoposide concentration increased (0 μM (control), 1 μM, and 5 μM). Furthermore, BCL-xL localization in Jurkat cells was examined by immunofluorescence technology. We found that this protein was localized in the cytoplasm and expression increased with higher etoposide concentration. Further experiments involved silencing BCL-xL and treating the cells with the same etoposide concentrations. BCL-xL-silenced cells showed higher sensitivity to etoposide and exhibited increased apoptosis. This suggests that BCL-xL plays a significant role in the chemotherapeutic resistance observed in T-ALL. The findings indicate that targeting BCL-xL could enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in T-ALL patients. This study advances our understanding of the mechanisms behind chemotherapeutic resistance in T-ALL and highlights the potential of BCL-xL as a therapeutic target to improve treatment outcomes.M. S

    Influence of working memory and anxiety

    An individual’s spatial abilities may be related to how successful they will be in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, and have practical significance for everyday experiences in the world (Wai et al., 2009). Within the literature, there is a wide range of individual differences that exist, particularly for navigation (Newcombe et al., 2022). Spatial anxiety, a type of anxiety that involves fear or worry regarding aspects of spatial processing, may be one explanation for individual differences; those with high spatial anxiety have greater apprehension towards spatial tasks and tend to perform worse on them (Alvarez-Vargas et al., 2021; Arrighi & Hausmann, 2022; Lyons et al., 2018). Working memory (WM) presents another individual difference which may explain some variation in spatial ability, as high-WM individuals tend to perform better on spatial tasks (Hoogmoed et al., 2022; Palmiero et al., 2016). Ramirez et al. (2012) found an interaction between spatial anxiety and WM on mental rotation in children, but these findings have not been extended to other spatial abilities, such as spatial reorientation. The present study examined if WM and spatial anxiety predicted performance when reorienting using terrain slope, a task in which large individual differences have been reported. Spatial anxiety and working memory were associated with the ability to identify the uphill direction of a slanted floor (Perceptual task). Contrary to my hypothesis, no correlations were found between spatial anxiety and working memory and the ability to remember a target object using the slant of the floor (Memory task), and no sex differences were found. These results confirm the role that spatial anxiety and WM may play for spatial thinking and success in STEM disciplines.M. A

    This thesis is an effort to revive the City of Muncie and set the stone for reviving other towns that are suffering the same fate. By promoting Downtown Centric and Missing Middle Housing, we can bring back part of the population closer to downtown and fix the damage we caused. TogetherDM - a research conducted by planning and community developing organization called czb partnering up with Delaware-Muncie Metropolitan Plan Commission Office (DMMPC) suggested that people are the key factor to determine a community’s ability to thrive. In order for an urban area to thrive, it requires 5% of the overall population to live in said area. Utilizing panelized modularity to lower the cost of construction while providing more housing options to help reduce the median housing price therefore giving more people the opportunity to become a homeowner.Thesis (B.
