    Athletics & academic outcomes of low SES students

    The primary focus of this mixed-method research was to examine the relationship between athletic-based extracurricular participation (ECAs) and academic outcomes for students from low SES backgrounds. The research was based on academic results and student interviews from two Central Indiana High Schools. An analysis of student's grade point (GPA) averages for three semesters post-COVID-19 allowed the GPA data to be collected when schools no longer had to enforce COVID-19 protocols. The analysis showed a modest yet statistically significant correlation between participation in ECAs and GPA. However, qualitative research uncovered that non-cognitive skills could be a reason for improved academic outcomes. Student interviews highlighted that ECA participation enhanced their non-cognitive skills, which could be a reason for improved academic outcomes. The themes that emerged from the student interviews included employability skills, positive relationships, and academic enhancement

    Our relationship with death in the United States has changed dramatically since the nineteenth century. With the rise of modern technology as well as modern medicine, we as a society have become very disconnected from death. As a result of this as well as the notion that death is “un-American,” we have become very fearful of death (Samuel x). While it may seem that our relationship with death in the United States is too far gone to worry about fixing, there are things that we can do to repair our relationship with our mortality. By adopting the tenets of the death positivity movement and choosing more eco-friendly alternatives to death care, as well as listening to people from non-death-denying cultures, we can make our relationship with death a bit more positive, and also begin to better understand and appreciate the natural cycle of life.B. ?Honors Colleg

    Exploring trauma-informed practices implemented by youth sport coaches

    Using SAMHSA’s six trauma-informed principles this study will investigate how formally trained trauma-informed youth coaches integrate a trauma-informed framework within their coaching practices. Participants included eight youth sport coaches who spent at least three hours in trauma-informed training within the past year. Each participant completed one 60-minute interview to share their trauma-informed coaching practices. The transcripts were analyzed using deductive analysis. Each of the six principles served as the framework for coding. The findings comprise subthemes for each principle, highlighting examples of how the participants apply each principle in their coaching. These findings contribute to the existing literature by providing examples of ways to utilize the framework for all youth sport coaches. Additionally, the findings offer researchers the opportunity to observe the practical application of the trauma-informed framework.M. S

    Understanding Himalayan water resources : a mixed methods analysis of water resource management and high mountain aquifers in the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), Nepal

    Water scarcity is a global issue. In the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), located in the High Himalayas of Nepal, threats to clean water access are compounded by climate change, splintered governance, an influx of tourists that climbs every year, and a lack of updated infrastructure that struggles to keep up with those visitors. Previous studies have identified that a significant fraction of water used for drinking and hygiene is contaminated, so even the installation of new infrastructure is not enough to provide residents with clean water resources. This mixed-methods case study utilizes qualitative interview responses provided by SNP locals, specifically those who live in Phortse, combined with quantitative geophysical analysis, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to understand the dynamics in which existing water resources may be improved and in which new alternative water may be procured to supplement those who dwell in the park as well as those who visit with clean, safe water. Common themes arose from interview participants concerning climate change, exponential glacial melting rates, shifting economic industries, and the desire for better education in the region. ERT analysis revealed several groundwater potential zones believed to be productive enough to provide the SNP villages of Phortse, Khumjung, and Khunde with significant alternative fresh water.M. S

    The connection between weight, FSH/LH ratios, & PCOS in women

    Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects 8-13% of reproductive age women. PCOS can cause ovarian cysts, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, mood issues, hair thinning (on the scalp), acne, and hormonal imbalances. One of the most notable symptoms of PCOS is infertility. The prevalence of infertility in women with PCOS ranges between 70 and 80% (Anderson, et al., 2015). In addition, an overwhelming 38-88% of women with PCOS are either overweight or obese. A 2019 study found that a modest reduction in body weight (around 5-10% of body weight), can cause “a clinically meaningful improvements” to “reproductive, hyperandrogenic, and metabolic features of PCOS” (Barber, 2-19). Within this research, a logistical regression is performed to find that that body weight can enhance the risk of PCOS and the infertility issues that come along with it

    Critical embodiment pedagogy in online writing instruction

    This dissertation describes the findings of a qualitative study investigating how and why instructors of online writing courses adopt a critical embodiment pedagogy approach in their classes. Critical embodiment pedagogy is a framework developed by Christina V. Cedillo that encourages students to consider their own identities, experiences, and bodies to be lenses through which they perceive and generate knowledge. This study seeks to advance the field’s understanding of online writing pedagogies by identifying some of the qualities of critical pedagogies and embodied pedagogies being adopted in online writing courses. Participants’ approaches to critical embodiment pedagogy were diverse because students’ and instructors’ needs and objectives varied broadly across institutions, programs, course types, and online modalities (i.e. hybrid, online synchronous, online asynchronous). However, the findings of this study indicate that participants designed their online writing courses to be accessible, affordable, and flexible across space and time by following web accessibility guidelines, incorporating students’ perspectives, prioritizing mental health and holistic wellness, and designing policies and activities with diverse students’ embodiments in mind. The data also indicates that instructors facilitated an awareness of diversity and inclusivity by addressing the complex role identity plays in the way individuals consume and compose texts and the different ways students can incorporate embodied knowledge production in their writing through activities that required somatic and kinesthetic learning, group work, community engagement, and reflection on personal identity and experiences. While participants stated that this approach was inspired by their personal ethics and social justice objectives and that they perceived improved student outcomes as a result of this approach, they also described the approach as requiring significant additional time and labor which might make it difficult to implement in some cases.Ph.     School psychologists' perceptions of barriers when implementing the model for comprehensive and inegrated school psychological services within schools

    This study aimed to assess the current percieved barriers to implementing the NASP Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services, also known as the NASP Practice Model. The study was exploratory and aimed to provide additional evidence to historically identified barriers to broader role fulfillment with the education setting, specific to the practice domains of the NASP Practice Model. Participants included 233 active school psychologists working in the United States. Using a mixed (quantitative and qualitative) descriptive survey design, percieved barriers were assessed broadly, within context of each practice domain, and demographic factors were analyzed for potential correlation factors. Results were assessed using descriptive analysis, chi-square analysis, and qualitative analysis. Across almost all domains within the NASP practice model time spent engaged in alternative activities was found to be the barrier contributing most to school psychologists working narrowly. More specifically, time spent in special education determination activities was identified qualitatively and within broad ranking of historically identified barriers. Additionally, current practicing school psychologists identified a general shortage of school psychologists as a barrier to practice in domains beyond data based decision making (i.e., Domain 1). Demographic characteristics, broadly, did not seem to have correlation to reducing percieved barriers. School psychologists endorsed percieved barriers to broad practice regardless of educational degree, ratio of students to school psychologists, individual caseloads, or years of experience. School psychologists also reported to feel adequately trained and prepared to provide services across the NASP practice Model once entering the workforce. These results support the need for legislative change that will allow increased time for school psychologists to work beyond the role of psychometrician. Implications for advocacy of change at the individual school psychologist level, system level, and for training programs are discussed. Limitations and future directions are also discussed.Ph. D

    SubTerra Trail, a symbiosis of complex programmable spaces and three-dimensional circulation, explored through earth-sheltering strategies. Its strategies influence the relationships of natural and artificial embedding, movement through numerous topographic challenges, and forges Prairie Creek’s existing site conditions to enhance the rider’s experience. Its multi-purpose program is unified by the site’s vegetation density and elevation, with the intention to define the trail type. SubTerra Trails’ facilities serve as a moment within the site’s complete trail providing a beginning, middle and end to a user’s adventure. Within each facility are public and private garage bays permitting visitors a designated workshop for their recreational vehicle and various social spaces for gathering, dining, services, and lastly spectator zones. Both facilities show the development in earth-sheltering construction methods including proposed solutions as well as components that clarify the building type. The exteriors are designed to blend a natural & artificial environment with earth and an abstract sheltering system. The surrounding earth is mapped to meet surfaces that can be used as transitional spaces from one experience to another.     Statistical and neural network modeling of proportional data

    In this thesis, we consider models of data with a proportional response. Data analysis, when there is a proportional response, has wide application in many domains including finance, insurance, population studies, and many others. In this thesis, we focus on the application of such models to health research. Traditionally, linear regression models, after transformations have been applied, and general linear models (GLMs) are approaches taken for such analysis. However, these conventional approaches may fall short in capturing intricate relationships and interactions within the data. To address this limitation, we explore the use of neural networks to model data with a proportional response. Neural networks offer a more flexible alternative, with a focus on prediction, while effectively handling non-linearity and interactions. On several real data sets, concerning relevant health issues, and on simulated data, we apply and compare different statistical and predictive models for data with a proportional response.M. S
