    Tootling with notecard implications and teacher accuracy

    The current study examined the effects of the written component of the tootling intervention on class wide levels of academically engaged behavior (AEB) and disruptive behavior (DB) by comparing traditional tootling to a formalized tootling card intervention and an interdependent group contingency control condition. The intervention used an alternating treatment design embedded within a multiple baseline design across the early elementary classrooms. The study determined whether the structure and the content of material written on the tootling notecards was the component that resulted in increases in AEB and decreased DB. The number of notecards produced for each condition and the accuracy of teacher accuracy rated in each condition were considered. This study added to the tootling literature base by determining whether a specific format of tootling increased the number of notecards and ensured greater interobserver agreement when counting notecards towards the pre-determined group goal. Overall, interdependent group contingencies are effective at increasing AEB and decreasing DB across all three classrooms. However, variable results were found in regard to which condition produces meaningful levels of AEB, DB, level of notecard responding, and higher interobserver agreement (IOA) rates. Specifically, tootling with a formalized card produced the most effective behavioral outcomes and had the highest number of completed notecards in in two of the classrooms. In addition, there were high levels IOA between the researcher and teachers on accurate notecard response rates. The results, outcomes, and implications of the study are further discussed.Ph. D

These programs include counseling services, job placement assistance, vocational training workshops, and community engagement initiatives. The interior spaces are designed to be welcoming and functional, with flexible areas for group activities, quiet reflection zones, and state-of-the-art facilities for therapy and training. By blending nature-focused architecture with impactful programming, the Downtown Indianapolis Veterans Center creates a harmonious balance between urban life and healing environments, embodying a commitment to veterans' well-being and successful integration into civilian society

    Cities within buildings

    Cities within Buildings is a project that aims to create and strengthen communities through unusually programmed buildings. The program of a City within a Building (CwB) and the adjacencies of spaces make for an immersive community experience that typically programmed residential, commercial, or mixed-use public architecture can’t achieve. A CwB can take many forms. In the case of this project the designed CwB, located in Chicago, IL, serves primarily as a residence, though has ample commercial, recreation, and functional program for both residents and non-residents. The goal of programming these functions all under one roof is to create a tight-knit community, one of which may be found typically in a suburban or even rural small town. To create this feeling in a dense city center may drive more unique residents into rental units, or keep young adults in the city center. The greatest form of sustainability is density, though as it currently stands, density can be seen as unattractive for various reasons. The CwB aims to solve this by providing ample outdoor space, opportunities for interaction with the site, and localized markets and vendors to bring a sense of community into the dense city of Chicago.Thesis (B.     Transforming urban futures: a multimodal hub for a high speed railway

    Architecture can be the catalyst for reshaping the United States public transportation systems and urban development practices. This diploma project not only mirrors international and national public transportation hubs but also integrates solar technology, wind energy, and optimizes user experiences. This multimodal transportation hub is located in Chicago, Illinois in the South Loop district. This location is to become a central point for a high-speed railway network spanning the Midwest, connecting neighboring cities and fostering a new era of efficient and sustainable transportation across the United States. The design principles embodied in this transportation hub focus on marrying functionality with aesthetic appeal. The architectural layout is planned to accommodate the different transportation modes seamlessly. From high-speed trains, buses, cars, uber, and pedestrian pathways, every aspect is integrated to ensure smooth transitions and easy accessibility for commuters. User experience takes center stage in the design philosophy, with a focus on convenience, comfort, and accessibility. The hub is designed to be a dynamic space, offering amenities such as smart ticketing systems, interactive information kiosks, and comfortable waiting areas.     Architecture for aging: designing for a lifetime of changes

    The UDS Foundation describes aging in place as design that is “firmly rooted in principles of universal design, which focuses on creating environments that are safe and comfortable for people of any age. Universal design offers ease of movement within spaces that are still welcoming and aesthetically pleasing.” How can architecture impact a person’s physical and mental health as they age? With adaptable architecture a user is enabled to independently use a space throughout their lifetime, which counteracts the effects of aging and allows them to stay in their home. These effects can impact the person’s senses, physical and mental health, and perception of isolation and loneliness. A small community in Muncie to demonstrate aging in place consists of two structures housing different users benefitting from the same design principles. One unit consists of older users within a co-operative environment while the other houses a young family. In each the public zone shared by all is connected to the private suites by a glass breezeway, and the spinal hallway contains hobby moments for the users.     Agree or disagree: are women emotionally suited for politics? A classification analysis using cart and random forest

    There is no shortage of research exploring the link between gender stereotypes and politics. The present study attempted to contribute to this scholarship by using recursive partitioning algorithms (CART and Random Forest) to identify the most important variables in classifying whether someone agrees or disagrees that men and women differ in their emotional suitability for politics. Using data from 251 respondents to the 2022 General Social Survey (GSS), results revealed that traditional gender role ideology, as well as attitudes towards immigration and abortion, are the most important variables for classification. The implications for voting— and the underrepresentation of women in politics more generally— is a matter for future research. Caution is advised when interpreting these results, given the weaknesses of the model discussed herein.M. S

    Parametrics for design

    A method-focused thesis that highlights a workflow that incorporates parametric tools. The workflow is iterative and option-based and requires the input of a designer throughout the process. The thesis aims to answer the question of how human design can be preserved within workflows that take advantage of parametric and AI tools. As the thesis is method-focused, it is less concerned with a final building design and more concerned with the process of how to get there. As such, the site and building are used as staging grounds for proof of concepts. The site is a pre-existing green space in downtown Chicago. The challenges within this urban context for which tools will be developed are greenspace preservation, solar access, and solar harvest effectiveness.Thesis (B.     Changing hydrology alters microbial community structure in a boreal peatland

    The goal of this study was to examine changes in aquatic microbial biofilm diversity at Alaskan peatland sites exposed to a long-term water-table (WT) manipulation, including drought (lowered water-table treatment), flooding (raised water-table treatment), and control (no manipulation) treatments. We examined the composition of bacteria, fungi, eukaryotic algae, and cyanobacteria using metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and ITS2 rRNA gene regions. Despite ubiquitous flooding at the time of sampling, microbial community composition was similar between the control and lowered treatment, but was dissimilar in the raised treatment. Increased microbial richness within our lowered WT treatment compared to the raised treatment suggested that conditions following WT drawdown and rewetting may enhance biofilm species richness. However, these conditions may not yet be extreme enough to drive this separation as our observed changes in the community composition within the lowered WT treatment were not different from ambient condition. We observed similarities among most biofilm taxa in all three water-table treatments and biomarker taxa that were associated with specific WT treatments and environmental conditions (i.e., dissolved oxygen, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and conductivity) correlated with biofilm community composition. However, we did observe that there were distinct differences in the relative abundance of bacterial phyla and fungal, eukaryotic algal, and cyanobacterial genera among treatments. This likely suggests that the long-term natural variation in water-table position regulates species membership of the microbial community, but altered nutrient dynamics associated with interannual variation in hydrology probably regulates the relative abundance of species that are available to colonize substrates.M.     Little prairie on the house

    The urban neighborhood has become a known area of abandonment in recent years. Houses become abandoned then become disheveled and eventually torn down. This can be remedied through the use of infill housing, but to create an optimal, contemporary living experience for the current and future inhabitants of the neighborhood, the project design must be achieved through the lens of nature. This diploma project addresses three scales of design. The neighborhood, the block, and the home. The neighborhood scale is being addressed through the use of eco-streets to create a walkable environment focused on safety. The block scale is being addressed using prairie gardens filled with native plant species to replace turf. This will create outdoor parks and healthier environments for both the natural world and the people living in the neighborhood. The home scale focuses on how technology can create better homes for the environment. Using very little energy while producing energy, water, and food for the larger community. All of these scales will incorporate biophilic design to create better spaces for the human experience by implementing natural materials and spatial arrangements.Thesis (B.     Vertical garden

    Cities have evolved throughout time to become taller and more condensed, essentially packing the land with buildings and skyscrapers. This has resulted in the natural environment within cities disappearing, causing temperatures to rise and the residents of the city becoming disconnected from nature. The amount of green space has become a problem not only for the people and the area around it, but to the birds and other animals that are natural to the area. The buildings within the city have begun to experiment with environmental/sustainable energy, and this is just the beginning of what these tall buildings are capable of. Skyscrapers have the capability to not only harness multiple forms of sustainable energy but actually replace the natural environment within their form/footprint. The possibility of creating connections in the sky that provide this green space and natural land back to the people within the city is very intriguing when thinking about the future of cities and skyscrapers. This design offers a thoughtful adaptation and possibility to the form of existing/future skyscrapers that not only replaces the natural environment that was taken away but also provides wind and structural stability within the interconnections.Thesis (B.
