Manufacture and mechanical properties of sintered composite of VGCF-contained TiB2, SiC, Si3N4 ceramics by hot pressing method

    Get PDF
TiB2, SiC and Si3N4 composite ceramics containing 0 or 3.23mass%VGCF (vapor grown carbon nano-fiber) were prepared by hot-press sintering method. The distribution of VGCF and mechanical and electrical properties were compared. By addition of VGCF, the relative density improved from 93.3 to 99.8% for TiB2, from 96.9 to 98.3% for SiC, and from 96.5 to 99.4% for Si3N4. In the TiB2 system, VGCF were not found in the SEM structure. In the SiC system, a large number of VGCFs were observed at the grain boundaries of SiC, and the VGCFs were uniformly dispersed. Mechanical properties such as three-point bending strength and fracture toughness were improved by approximately 1.6 times. The electrical conductivity was improved about 350 times in the case of SiC by the addition of VGCF.departmental bulletin pape

Effect of Relocating Parking Lots to Alleviate Traffic Congestion - Subject to the Central Street of the Central City of Nagano City -

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to analyze parking behavior and effect of relocating parking lots to alleviate traffic congestion on main streets in the Central City Nagano. This is to control the location of the parking lot without impairing the excursion behavior of car users in city area. This study suggests applying Kaplan-Meier Analysis to estimate parking probability considering walking distance to destination and number of excursion trips. The purpose of this study is to collect a questionnaire survey conducted on parking lot users in urban areas, and to use it as a material for the development of a pedestrian priority road project by relocating parking lots in the central urban area of Nagano City.departmental bulletin pape

Materiality of the Dead in Mark Twain's The American Claimant (1892)―From "One-Armed Pete" to "Death Business" ―

    Get PDF
In this paper I examine the commercial value behind the "business of death" in 19th-century America through literature through Mark Twain's The American Claimant. Particular attention is paid to the practical procedure of embalming, and the imaginary technique of "materializing a corpse, or resurrecting the dead," as described in Twain's novel. By focusing on Pete's doubly exploitative death, I aim to shed new light on this work by considering how the "materialization of the dead" connects to this war-wounded cripple and to death in postbellum America. I then present the possibility of projecting Twain's vision into an industrial perspective on 21st-century AI technology.departmental bulletin pape

Electric discharge machining of TiB2-B4C composite ceramics by spark plasma sintering and changes in mechanical properties

    Get PDF
TiB2-B4C composite ceramics containing 0-80mol% B4C were fabricated from TiB2 and B4C powders by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Wire-cut electrical discharge machining (EDM) was performed on the sintered compacts to investigate changes in mechanical and electrical properties. In the electric discharge machining, the composition containing 0 to 60 mol% of B4C with high electrical conductivity was able to be machined according to the machining setting conditions. By electric discharge machining, the hardness improved by about 11% on average, the bending strength decreased by about 20%, the surface roughness decreased to about 1/120 to 1/300, and the electrical conductivity decreased by about 10%.departmental bulletin pape

Manufacture and property of each Ni, Ti, NiTi metal/graphene composite by ultrasonic-assisted hot-pressing method

    Get PDF
The composites containing 0% or 15 vol% of graphene (GnP) for each matrix metal of Ni, Ti and NiTi were prepared by hot pressing method with or without assistance of ultra-sonic waves, and the mechanical and electrical properties were compared. The relative density of Ni and Ti-based metals with 0% GnP content was 96% or higher. When 15 vol% GnP was included, it decreased to about 84-94%. The relative density of the NiTi with 0% GnP content increased from 90.6% to 98.2% by applying ultrasonics. However, when GnP was included, it decreased to 91.1-92.4%. The mechanical properties showed proportional to the relative density. The electrical conductivities of pure Ni, Ti, and NiTi metals were 9.09, 1.78 and 1.19 MS/m, respectively. The electrical conductivity of composite with 15vol% of GnP decreased, particularly for Ni-based and Ti-based materials, which decreased to 22-53%.departmental bulletin pape
