The beautiful (un)present: the figure of Melusine in polish folk tales

Jak można przypuszczać, obszerna część Historii o Meluzynie, opowiadająca o przygodach synów niezwykłej matki, pozostała poza polem twórczej obserwacji pisarza ze względu na zbytnią złożoność fabularno-kompozycyjną.THE BEAUTIFUL (UN)PRESENT: THE FIGURE OF MELUSINE IN POLISH FOLK TALES This article seeks to answer questions concerning the presence and function of Historia o Meluzynie (the Polish translation of the French Le Roman de Mélusine), a medieval romance, in Polish folk tales and, in more general terms, Polish folk culture. One can speak only of indirect evidence of knowledge of the story, as exemplified by Meluzyna, czyli panna z śląskiego wiatru (1947) [Melusine, or a Maiden of the Silesian Wind], a literary adaptation by Stanisław Wasylewski. The author of this version refers to the studies contributed by native folklore researchers and to oral tales about this mysterious maiden, which, for him, were sources of creative inspiration. Wasylewski’s work relates to only the first part of the French romance, which perhaps indicates the actual state of knowledge of the story displayed by folk storytellers, especially as the heroine of Wasylewski’s text is connected with the element of the wind. This can be interpreted as the author’s reference to the Silesian belief in which gusts of violent wind were treated as the moans let out by the figure of the unhappy Meluzyna. It would appear that the extensive fragment of Le Roman de Mélusine concerning the fate of her sons remained beyond the scope of folklore- and literary-specific observation due to there being too much story- and compositionlinked complexity

Oxo-Titanium(IV) Complex/Polymer Composites—Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity Test

This article belongs to the Special Issue Antimicrobial Materials with Medical Applications. The emergence of a large number of bacterial strains resistant to many drugs or disinfectants currently used contributed to the search of new, more effective antimicrobial agents. In the presented paper, we assessed the microbiocidal activity of tri- and tetranuclear oxo-titanium(IV) complexes (TOCs), which were dispersed in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. The TOCs were synthesized in reaction to Ti(OR)4 (R = iPr, iBu) and HO2CR’ (R’ = 4-PhNH2 and 4-PhOH) in a 4:1 molar ratio at room temperature and in Ar atmosphere. The structure of isolated oxo-complexes was confirmed by IR and Raman spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activity of the produced composites (PMMA + TOCs) was estimated against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and S. aureus ATCC 25923) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 and E. coli ATCC 25922) bacteria and yeasts of Candida albicans ATCC 10231. All produced composites showed biocidal activity against the bacteria. Composites containing {Ti4O2} cores and the {Ti3O} core stabilized by the 4-hydroxybenzoic ligand showed also high activity against yeasts. The results of investigations carried out suggest that produced (PMMA + TOCs) composites, due to their microbiocidal activity, could find an application in the elimination of microbial contaminations in various fields of our lives

Abstract: The subject of this secondary qualitative data research was related to researching and understanding the issue of helplessness in the lives of homeless males addicted to alcohol. The aim of the study was to learn about the core category of helplessness according to the opinions of 10 homeless Poles. The research was based on 3 secondary datasets from 3 primary sources including 13 transcripts of interviews with homeless males who had been in the process of abstinence for 3 months to 9 years. The results indicated the existence of helplessness in the lives of homeless males in the following two aspects: first chronological and second structural-contextual. Chronological helplessness indicated its threefold presence: as a general helplessness in life before alcohol addiction, during addiction, and during the sobriety and therapy process. Structural and contextual helplessness indicated a 3-pillar pattern: Verbalised helplessness was present in transcripts indicated directly, referring to denotation of the category. Hidden helplessness revealed itself in the background related to the connotations of the helplessness category. Helplessness was associated with sub-categories regarding: self, routine activities, addiction artefacts, symbolic Ends, and shrinking of personal space. Processual helplessness was referred to as the process of becoming helpless and coming out of helplessness in the context of the loss and regaining of dignity by addicted and sobering males. This report contains implications and suggestions for the social work and public education practice

Excessive increase in public expenditure as a threat to Poland's economic security

Niemały już wcześniej, a dodatkowo skokowo powiększony w czasie covid-19, dług publiczny Polski będzie więc w następnych latach jeszcze bardziej ograniczać możliwości rozwojowe polskich przedsiębiorstw i poziom inwestycji, a w efekcie hamować proces nadrabiania zaległości rozwojowych polskiej gospodarki i obniżać poziom zamożności Polaków. Jednocześnie skazuje on polską gospodarkę na wyższy poziom opodatkowania w nadchodzących latach.Excessive public expenditures in Poland, exceeding the level of public revenues every year, causes the accumulation of even higher public debt, which increases investment risk in Poland, discourages foreign investors, overstating the cost of loans and hindering access to them. It should be emphasized that the market cost of capital in Poland is one of the highest in the EU - also compared to other Central and Eastern European countries, which means that the interest rate on loans in Poland is one of the highest in Europe, and the Polish government is one of the most expensive borrowers among EU countries. Public debt in Poland, which had not been insignificant before, was additionally abruptly increased in the covid-19 period. Therefore, Poland's public debt in the coming years will limit the development possibilities of Polish enterprises and the level of investments even more strongly, and as a result, inhibit the process of catching up of the Polish economy and reduce the level of wealth of Poles. At the same time, it condemns the Polish economy to a higher level of taxation in the coming years

A preprint of the article submitted to Studies in Conservation on November 30, 2018 as a contribution to LACONA 12 conference special issue. This article presents the results of the examination by means of optical coherence tomography (OCT) of two of the nine monumental ceiling paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and his studio, still located in their original location at the Banqueting House, the only surviving building of the former Whitehall Palace in London. OCT is a non-invasive technique of structural imaging of layers semi-permeable to the infra-red radiation. The aim of the 2018 research campaign at the Banqueting House, conducted within the MOLAB programme under the IPERION CH project, was to determine the present condition of the paintings and thus inform decisions about future conservation planning for these unique paintings.Financial support by the Access to Research Infrastructures activity in the H2020 Programme of the EU (IPERION CH Grant Agreement n. 654028) is gratefully acknowledged

The impact of Yoga practice on the indicator of flexibility was assessed at the end of the pedagogical experiment. The state of its development before and after the experiment was determined and compared. Results of the research. The results of the pedagogical experiment confirmed the successful influence of the offered activities through Yoga practice on the development of flexibility. It has been established that the systematic Yoga practicing contributes to the best manifestation of this physical quality. It has been proved that the use of Yoga practice has improved the flexibility indicators of the experimental group more in comparison with the control group. Conclusions. Practicing Yoga has positively impacted on the development of flexibility among female students. Whereas this quality is one of the indicators for assessing the physical condition of the graduates (18-20 years), it is expedient to include Yoga practicing in the curriculum of physical education for students of higher educational institutions and introduce this method of flexibility development in the process of physical education
