Studies of technogenic soils in Poland: past, present, and future perspectives

    Get PDF
For a long time, the soils covering areas strongly transformed by human were ignored in scientifi c discourse. Also, practice did not care much about these soils because of their unproductivity. Only the large post-mining areas reclaimed and transformed into a forest or agricultural land were more interesting both for science and practice. In the case of post-mining areas the term “soilless land” was used for a long time, especially in relation to areas which were not reclaimed. In this paper, the past studies (until the end of 20th century) of technogenic soils in Poland were described. Technogenic soils of urban and industrial areas appeared in scientifi c considerations in Poland in the second half of the 20th century. In those times, soil properties on disposal sites were mainly investigated as a basic information for further design of technical and biological reclamation on disposal sites. Two Polish scientists should be emphasised as the world pioneers in concepts and studies of technogenic soils: (1) Michał Strzemski, who proposed a classifi cation scheme for soils in urban and industrial areas, as well as listed the tasks for future studies of these soils, and (2) Tadeusz Skawina, who focused on the dynamic and directions of the soil-forming processes on the mine spoils in the context of their reclamation. Moreover, studies of technogenic soils in the last two decades were also shown in the paper. From the beginning of the 21st century the scientifi c research gained momentum. Nowadays, Polish researchers have great achievements in studying technogenic soils, including investigation of their properties, genesis, evolution, classifi cation, biological features etc. Furthermore, we drew some outlines for future studies of Technosols

O patriotyzmie w najnowszej literaturze dla dzieci

    Get PDF

Urban Living Labs: how to enable inclusive transdisciplinary research?

    Get PDF
The Urban Living Lab (ULL) approach has the potential to create enabling environments for social learning and to be a successful arena for innovative local collaboration in knowledge co-creation and experimentation in the context of research and practice in sustainability transitions. Nevertheless, complex issues such as the urban Food-Water-Energy (FWE) Nexus present a challenge to the realization of such ULL, especially regarding their inclusiveness. We present ULL as a frame for a local knowledge co-creation and participation approach based on the project "Creating Interfaces - Building capacity for integrated governance at the Food-Water-Energy-nexus in cities on the water". This project aims at making FWE Nexus linkages better understandable to the stakeholders (citizens and associations, city government, science, businesses), and to facilitate cooperation and knowledge exchange among them. This paper focuses on and discusses inclusiveness as a key aspect and challenge of ULLs and on what literature and our experiences in this regard suggest for the advancement of the concept of ULL towards ULL 2.0. These findings often also relate to framing transdisciplinary research in a wider sense. This study was conducted in the Creating Interfaces project, funded within the framework of the Sustainable Global Urban Initiative (SUGI) Food-Water-Energy Nexus program. This program has been set up by the Belmont Forum and the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Urban Europe and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon, 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement #730254 and the following national funding agencies: The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded this work under grant #1830933, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded this work under grant #01UV1803A, the National Science Center (NCN) of Poland funded this work under grant #UMO-2017/25/Z/HS6/03046, and the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation (UEFISCDI), of Romania funded this work under grant #COFUND-ERANET-ENSUGI-Creating Interfaces

Artificial Neural Network-Based Gain-Scheduled State Feedback Speed Controller for Synchronous Reluctance Motor

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on designing a gain-scheduled (G-S) state feedback controller (SFC) for synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) speed control with non-linear inductance characteristics. The augmented model of the drive with additional state variables is introduced to assure precise control of selected state variables (i.e. angular speed and d-axis current). Optimal, non-constant coefficients of the controller are calculated using a linear-quadratic optimisation method. Non-constant coefficients are approximated using an artificial neural network (ANN) to assure superior accuracy and relatively low usage of resources during implementation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time when ANN-based gain-scheduled state feedback controller (G-S SFC) is applied for speed control of SynRM. Based on numerous simulation tests, including a comparison with a signum-based SFC, it is shown that the proposed solution assures good dynamical behaviour of SynRM drive and robustness against q-axis inductance, the moment of inertia and viscous friction fluctuations. This research was supported by the ‘Excellence Initiative—Research University’ programme of Warsaw University of Technology under grant ‘ENERGYTECH-1 Power’ and by the ‘Excellence Initiative—Research University’ programme of Nicolaus Copernicus University

Public Registers in the Kingdom of Prussia at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries in a Systemic Perspective

    Get PDF
The advancement of legal relations between citizens alone, as well as between citizens and the state, has forced the registration of specific facts. In the light of this, a variety of public registers have evolved. Although these registers often complemented one another and there was a flow of information between them, all in all, the literature does not recognize their systemic nature. A certain exception in this matter is solely represented by land registers and cadastre. That said, at present Poland is one good example that thanks to the use of data and computer technology there is an increasing integration of these formally dispersed registers. But it appears that even solutions from the nineteenth century can be seen and understood as a contemporary system. This claim shall be proven on the example of public registers kept in the territory of the Kingdom of Prussia from the second half of the 19th century. The research presented in the article was based on the system analysis method. On the other hand, the study was conducted with use of legal acts, literature and archival materials collected in Polish and German archives.National Science Centre, Poland, grant number 2019/32/C/HS3/0012

Austria in Polish security policy in 1918-1926

Zawiera różne narzędzia, zadania, ćwiczenia, kwestionariusze samooceny, formularze, przykładowe programy wsparcia przydatne w lepszym rozpoznaniu przez absolwentów własnego potencjału i zaplanowaniu rozwoju zawodowego. Adresatami publikacji są: eksperci rynku pracy, doradcy zawodowi w publicznych służbach zatrudnienia, pracownicy Biur Karier w uczelniach wyższych, nauczyciele akademiccy, coachowie kariery, mentorzy stażystów, opiekunowie praktyk zawodowych, uczniowie, studenci, absolwenci szkół i uczelni wyższych. The book raises the issue of supporting young people in successfully transitioning from school to work. Although entering the labor market is in a way conditioned by individual preferences and young people’s own decisions, various institutions and public policies can undoubtedly influence a smooth transition from school to work. The theoretical part of the book focuses on characterizing and assessing selected institutional arrangements supporting the process of transition from school to work. At the same time, the book mentions new concepts, introduced in some EU countries, that ensure sustainable integration of youth into the labour market, e.g. one-stop guidance centre. The practical part of the book is a practitioner’s toolkit useful in vocational counseling for young people. It contains a variety of exercises, self-assessment questionnaires, forms, examples of support programs and employment services to help graduates recognize their own potential and plan their professional career. The publication is addressed to: labour market experts, caseworkers in public employment services, employees of career services at universities, academic teachers, career coaches, trainee mentors, apprenticeship supervisors, pupils, students, graduates of schools and universities.Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernik

Religion as a condition of metaphysical openness? Religious foundations of the open world

    Get PDF
Emphasizing the thoughts of E. Cioran, who points out that only a religious man can properly grasp the nature of being, the article addresses the issue of metaphysical openness. Firstly, it considers what the metaphysical idea of openness is, and how it relates to religion. The second point of analysis is whether acceptance of the existence of God (Transcendence) can be combined with the idea of an open world? The third notion is whether man and culture, deprived of religious experiences, are actually threatened with closing the world and living only in hic et nunc? In the religious sense, openness must be considered twofold. On the one hand, it is looking towards another dimension of reality, on the other hand, it is openness to the depths of man himself. In reference to human life, such openness signifies that it cannot be reduced to a biological dimension demarcated by birth and death. Man is always something more. When it comes to values, it turns out that they cannot be reduced to our will and creativity, because there is something more to them. Religious openness prevents the reduction of the world to something singular and universal, and prevents us from becoming stuck in the world and in ourselves
