SHARE YOUR SOILS User Manual, 38 s.

    No full text
The internet platform Share Your Soils (SYStem) was created as the world's first social edutainment medium dedicated to the description and categorisation of soils according to the international WRB classification. The platform represents an innovative teaching tool that helps teachers at high school and universities as well as environmental researchers and practitioners. The main tool developed within the project is a mobile and a web application to send photos of soil profiles with a description, a geolocation and a classification proposal. Users have the possibility to exchange and share their knowledge and help less experienced colleagues by commenting and suggesting soil genesis and classification. Join in, share your soils, discuss their origin and systematic position, collect points in different categories and have fun learning soil classification! Soil classification is a difficult issue and requires many years of study under the guidance of experienced teachers. In the course of long-term studies and field research, soil scientists acquire the skills of recognizing and correctly naming many important features resulting from litho-, anthropo- or pedogenic processes. The problem with learning the secrets of this art is the lack of opportunity to see many examples of different soil features hidden beneath the earth's surface. Visiting many regions of the world for didactic or scientific purposes, we felt the need to share our photographic collections with other people involved in the study and interpretation of the soil environment. It is with great pleasure that we present to the reader a set of several hundred photographs showing the features, properties, soil horizons, as well as examples of interpretation of soil profiles – in accordance with the rules and nomenclature adopted in the international soil naming and classification system – the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (2022). The book has been divided into several chapters. The photos have been arranged in such a way as to reflect the process of creating a description of the soil profile – from environmental features, through morphological soil features, diagnostic horizons, properties and materials, to specific examples of soil profile classification. In the section with soil profiles, we managed to collect 100 examples from all Reference Soil Groups found in all climatic zones of our planet. In the names of the soils, we have mainly emphasised those features (qualifiers) that are morphologically identifiable in the photos, consciously omitting those that can only be read from the results of laboratory analyses. We hope that the handbook, developed as one of outcomes of an Erasmus+ project Share Your Soils (SYStem), will be useful in didactic and scientific work and will help to understand what the individual soil characteristics look like, in general and in the context of the nomenclature used in the World Reference Base for Soil Resources.Erasmus

Legal Aspects of Functioning of a Limited Liability Company as a Social Enterprise in Polish Law

    No full text
The legal form of a limited liability company is the most popular among all commercial companies in Poland. The vast majority of these companies conduct business activities for profit. However, there are a number of companies that are preoccupied with non-economic activities, pursue pro-social goals, and define themselves as non-profit companies or social enterprises. The article presents the historical outline and legal basis for the conducting of non-profit activities by limited liability companies in Poland. The subject of the research will be the legal conditions for the obtaining of the status of a social economy entity by a limited liability company and the conditions for the obtaining of the status of a social enterprise, in connection with the entry into force of the Act of August 5, 2022 on the social economy. The possibility of conducting business activity by these entities will also be analysed

A complex case of trade in metals: The origin of copper used for artefacts found in one hoard from a Late Bronze Age Lusatian Urnfield Culture in Poland

Metal artefacts from Bronze Age hoards have routinely been used to study interregional contacts. Their stylistic and typological features helped distinguish local products and imports by appearance. In the last 40 years, combined lead isotope and chemical analyses of metals have been widely applied to verify hypotheses based on style and typology. This paper is a comprehensive typological and analytical study of a metal item hoard discovered in Paszowice, SW Poland. In the Bronze Age, the area was inhabited by the Lusatian Urnfield culture (ca. 1350/1300–800/750 BC) communities. We expected that at least some of the artefacts would be local products fashioned according to foreign stylistic patterns. The research aimed to determine whether a ‘classical’ stylistic analysis combined with provenance studies of metals would allow more decisive conclusions. This combination of methods could also show how the metal reached the Lusatian Urnfield culture settlement zone. We conducted a detailed typological and chronological analysis to map the distribution of similar artefact types. It demonstrated that stylistic matches for the artefacts from Paszowice occur mainly in NE Hungary, S Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania. Selected metal artefacts (both tin bronze items and raw copper objects) from Paszowice were also analysed for their chemical (EPMA) and lead isotope (MC ICP MS) compositions. The study revealed many copper sources used for their production, ranging from the nearest copper mines in the Slovak Ore Mountains, through Eastern Alps and mines in Sardinia, to possibly the Iberian Peninsula. In this way, we identified the potential trade routes by which metal could get to SW Poland: the southwestern and southeastern routes and the Mediterranean-Danube route. The Iberian metal might have also reached the study area from the north – through its redistribution by Scandinavian traders. Our results show that metal from many sources circulated in central Europe during the Late Bronze Age. The Lusatian Urnfield communities were part of a pan-European exchange network and maintained extensive long-distance contacts, allowing metal acquisition from various sources. This work was financially supported by the National Science Centre, Poland (projects nos.: 2017/27/N/HS3/01097 and 2021/40/C/HS3/ 00097

Does urban polycentricity contribute to regional economic growth? Empirical evidence from a panel of Chinese urban regions

    Get PDF
Author accepted versionResearch examining the economic effects of urban polycentricity remains inconclusive. We contribute to this debate by developing a longitudinal framework in which changes in polycentricity in Chinese urban regions are linked with changes in total factor productivity. While we find no evidence of urban polycentricity being conducive to economic growth, we observe that the relationship depends on population size and the interactions between cities. We also find that cities borrow size from nearby cities in large urban regions, contributing to regional economic growth. We use our findings to reflect on China's regional economic and urban development strategies. The research presented in this paper was financially supported through research project number 2020/38/A/HS4/00312 of the Polish National Science Centre (NCN)
