The productivity effects of polycentricity: A systematic analysis of urban regions in Europe

    Get PDF
Author accepted versionWe focus on the extent to which polycentric urban regions can substitute for the agglomeration economies provided by large cities. Building on an open‐source software tool that helps identifying polycentric developments in urban regions, we analyse the spatial structure (in terms of size, dispersion and polycentricity) of 94 regions across 34 European countries and link this to their level of total factor productivity. We find that both more polycentric regions and more dispersed regions are associated with lower productivity levels. The research presented in this paper was financially supported through research project number 2020/38/A/HS4/00312 of the Polish National Science Centre (NCN)

A commentary on the Supreme Court judgment of 24 may 2019 (I CSK 218/18)

The Supreme Court in its judgment of 24 May 2019, I CSK 218/18, ruled that the purpose of increase in a lump sum remuneration under Article 632 § 2 of the Polish Civil Code is only to reduce the loss. The purpose of increasing the lump sum remuneration is not to compensate for the entire imminent loss. Such increase should cover that part of the loss which exceeds the normal contractual risk. The aim of this paper is to comment on the above judgment of the Supreme Court. The author compares the Supreme Court judgment with the views of legal scholars and commentators on the Polish judicial law, and with the previous case law

How Does Justice Relate to Economic Welfare? A Case Against Austro-Libertarian Welfare Economics

Rather, we suggest that in light of our two thought experiments, Austro-libertar- ianism has at least a pro tanto reason to conceive of justice and welfare as two logically distinct ideals. This would in turn, most interestingly, predict the possibility of (a) just but welfare-diminishing exchanges and (b) unjust but welfare-enhancing ones. Upon considering possible re- joinders to our points, we suggest that Austro-libertarians abandon a justice-based notion of welfare.Narodowe Centrum Nauk

Alternative Food Networks from the Institutional Perspective

    Get PDF
This article analyses the internal diversity and dynamics of Polish Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), using the concept of institutions and their impact on collective action as a theoretical tool. Emphasis is put on four dimensions of AFNs’ internal diversity: meanings, association models, control mechanisms, and actions. The analysis is based on empirical material collected from nationwide qualitative studies conducted in six AFNs selected through purposive sampling. While adhering to a similar system of values focused on individual health, family and profit, the networks differ from one another in terms of the prevalent models of relationships, supervision, and activity. They appear to share certain motives and values in their market-oriented or own security-oriented actions and strategies, and show an inclination to use formal tools. In parallel, they reveal differences in their levels of focus on building internal relationships, which also emerge as the primary factor determining the potential and activity of the studied initiatives.Work founded by the National Science Centre, Poland under grant agreement no. 2017/26/D/HS6/0086

Argumentation Ethics, Self-Ownership, and Hohfeldian Analysis of Rights

This research was funded in whole or in part by the National Science Centre, Poland, grant number no. 2020/39/B/HS5/00610. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC-BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission. This paper applies a Hohfeldian analysis of rights to Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s argumentation ethics, particularly to its crucial premise that it is impossible to deny argumentatively one’s opponent’s self-ownership right without falling thereby into a performative contra- diction; for one’s act of denying it presupposes this very right as its own condition of possibility. This paper argues that a properly construed Hohfeldian analysis supports the above claim.Narodowe Centrum Nauki/National Science Centr

The significant spatial variability of soil cover results from the diverse impacts of different soil-forming factors. This book presents pedovariability in the form of a collection of soil sequences typical of particular landscape types. The fifth part of the Soil Sequences Atlas contains description of 73 pedons (with soil profile photo, description of morphology and laboratory data) grouped into 15 chapters each representing a different environmental setting specific to very diverse regions from five continents – North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. The Atlas begins by presenting a pedo-landscapes from Americas – from Mexico to Peru. Next comes a group of chapters devoted to The Mediterranean Region – Spain, Italy, Slovenia and Tunisia. The next two chapters concern the soils of Central Europe – Hungary and Poland. At the end there are examples of steppe (Russian chernozems), semi-arid (Iran) and subtropical soils of Southeast Asia (Thailand). Out of 32 reference groups, as many as 17 are represented in the fifth part of atlas Soil Sequences Atlas. The most common soils are Calcisols (semi-arid areas) and the soils with clay illuviation (Luvisols) developed in very diverse environments. The collected data is intended as a useful educational tool in teaching soil science, and in supporting an understanding of the reasons behind the variability of soil cover, and also as a WRB classification guideline. It is intended to be useful not only to students but also to practitioners in agriculture, forestry, environmental protection and landscape planning. The Atlas was developed as part of the EU Erasmus+ SYStem project (Share Your Soils – Project No 2019-1-PL01-KA203-065101 Strategic Partnerships for higher education (KA203) of Erasmus+ programme of the European Union)

Aligned silver nanowires for plasmonically-enhanced fluorescence detection of photoactive proteins in wet and dry environment

    Get PDF
We developed a method of aligning silver nanowires in a microchannel and fixing them to glass substrates via appropriate functionalization. The attachment of nanowires to the substrate is robust with no variation of their angles over minutes. Specific conjugation with photoactive proteins is observed using wide-field fluorescence imaging in real-time for highly concentrated protein solution, both in a microchannel and in a chip geometry. In the latter case we can detect the presence of the proteins in the dropcasted solution down to single proteins. The results point towards possible implementation of aligned silver nanowires as geometrically defined plasmonic fluorescence sensing platformsResearch was partially financed by the National Science Centre (Poland) within the grants no 2018/31/G/ST3/03596, 2017/27/B/ST3/02457, 2021/41/N/ST7/03528, and 2016/22/E/ST5/00531. Why do owls have it worse? Mediating role of self-perceptions in the links between diurnal preference and features of mental health

    Get PDF
Recent research provides evidence for the negative social perceptions of evening chronotypes and their consequences on mental health. However, there is a lack of studies indicating whether these negative, socially shared beliefs may become internalized in negative self-perceptions of evening-types (E-types). The present article provides a seminal empirical analysis of the role of self-liking and self-competence in the associations between chronotype and both depressiveness and well-being. In the first part of the study, the participants completed the Composite Scale of Morningness. On the basis of the chronotype cut-off criteria for Composite Scale of Morningness distribution, 100 individuals were classified as morning-types (M-types) and 66 individuals as E-types. Therefore, 166 participants (80 women and 86 men) aged 18–36 years (M ± SD: 29.27 ± 4.81 years) took part in the second part of the study, and completed questionnaires measuring self-liking, self-competence, life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, and depressiveness. Results show that E-types scored lower in self-liking, self-competence and subjective well-being, and higher in depressive symptoms than M-types. Controlling for age and gender, we obtained significant mediation effects, showing that the relationship between chronotype and subjective well-being might stem from the lower levels of self-liking and self-competence among E-types, and that the relationship between chronotype and depressive symptoms might stem from the lower level of self-liking among E-types. Our results suggest that self-liking and self-competence are important antecedents of lower well-being and higher depressiveness reported by E-types. Socially shared stereotypes of M-types and E-types can be internalized by the extreme chronotypes, which may significantly affect their psychological health. The study was supported by the National Science Centre in Poland under Grant 2021/41/N/HS6/01903, awarded to Joanna Gorgol
