White Paper: Designing the perfect New European Bauhaus neighbourhood

    No full text
The concept of Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments (SHAFE) emphasises the comprehensive person-centred experience as essential to promoting living environments. SHAFE takes an interdisciplinary approach, conceptualising complete and multidisciplinary solutions for an inclusive society. From this approach, we promote participation, health, and well-being experiences by finding the best possible combinations of social, physical, and digital solutions in the community. This initiative emerged bottom-up in Europe from the dream and conviction that innovation can improve health equity, foster caring communities, and sustainable development. Smart, adaptable, and inclusive solutions can promote and support independence and autonomy throughout the lifespan, regardless of age, gender, disabilities, cultural differences, and personal choices, as well as promote happier and fairer living places. The New European Bauhaus initiative gathers “beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive projects and ideas” to inspire a positive transformation around us. The New European Bauhaus 2024 Festival took place between 9-13 April. “Designing the perfect New European Bauhaus neighbourhood: New European Bauhaus meets SHAFE” was a Satellite Event of the Festival, held as an online workshop, organised by the SHAFE Foundation on April 9th, 2024. At the event, a group of 50 participants with a multidisciplinary background discussed how to meet the challenges of the European Garcia family to enable them to live in a perfect neighbourhood. The White Paper presents the findings of the participants with the New European Bauhaus inspiring projects and ideas to house the European Garcia family in their neighbourhood. The White Paper recommends developers, designers, planners, and policymakers to include person-centred design of social and physical environments and technologies. Although awareness of person-centred design is growing, many initiatives still hamper the inclusion of citizens or end-users throughout the development of products and services

Variability of cone crops in the European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) seed orchard in Sękocin Stary

    No full text
The genetic diversity of seed orchards is assessed by the effective number of clones. The effective number of clones is an indicator that is usually calculated based on the frequency of ramets in the clones. In this study, this parameter was compared by additionally calculating it only for the cone-producing ramets. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of clones to cone production in the European larch seed orchard in Sękocin Stary in 2022. The cone production of individual clones growing in the seed orchard was analysed. Cones were collected from all larch ramets (trees). Of the 240 trees planted, only 186, representing a total of 40 clones, produced cones. The cones of each tree were counted and weighed individually. It was found that clone no. 19 produced the most cones with a yield of 1,493 cones, representing 8.13% of the total seed orchard. Clone no. 26 produced the lowest yield with only 14 cones from five trees (0.08% share of cone production). Analysis of variance showed the significance of differences between clones for the mean number of cones (p = 0.0003) and for the mean cone weight (p = 0.0002) for the clones. The effective number of clones was Nc = 37.97 for the trees with cones and 39.49 for all trees (originally planted), excluding crops. The relative effective number of clones for trees/ramets with cones was Nr = 0.95. Despite a high value of Nr, the clones in the studied seed orchard differed significantly in their contribution to cone crop in 2022. In order not to limit the genetic variability of forest reproductive material from seed orchards, cones should also be collected from trees that produce few cones

His bundle pacing in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation and heart failure with non-reduced ejection fraction – retrospective study

    Get PDF
Background: Heart failure (HF) constitutes a complex clinical entity and often coexists with atrial fibrillation (AF). There is a scarcity of evidence-based therapies for those with ejection fraction (EF) ≥ 40%. The effect restoring regular ventricular response in patients with HF with EF ≥ 40% and concomitant permanent AF is unknown. Methods: This was a retrospective case-series study. 14 patients with symptomatic HF with EF ≥ 40% and permanent AF who had undergone permanent His bundle pacing (pHBP) were identified and enrolled. For 9 patients pHBP was a primary strategy, for the remaining patients it was an upgrade from right single chamber ventricular pacing. All patients underwent a follow-up visit 3 months after the procedure. Results: The severity of HF based on the New York Heart Association (NYHA) class was significantly reduced post-pHBP (mean 2.5 vs. 1.0, p-value < 0.001). Left ventricular ejection fraction significantly increased (mean increase 8.5%, p < 0.001) Similarly, significant decrease in the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter was observed after pHBP (mean decrease 5.4 mm, p < 0.001). The degree of mitral regurgitation after three months was lower (mean grade 2.4 vs. 1.2, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Permanent HBP might be beneficial in the setting of permanent AF and HF with EF ≥ 40%

    Get PDF
Atrial tachycardia (AT) is a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia characterized by rapid, abnormal electrical activity originating from the atria. It represents a significant clinical challenge due to its potential for recurrence, adverse cardiovascular outcomes and impact on quality of life. Catheter ablation has emerged as a primary therapeutic modality for AT, offering the potential for rhythm control and symptom alleviation. Despite advancements in techniques and technology, the success of AT ablation can vary widely among patients. Identifying prognostic factors associated with successful AT ablation and potential outcome improving techniques is imperative for optimizing patient care

Advances in understanding, diagnosis and targeting ATTR cardiomyopathy: a review

    Get PDF
Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) manifests as wild-type (ATTRwt) and hereditary/mutant (ATTRv) forms and can lead to heart failure due to cardiac amyloidopathy. Diagnosing ATTR, particularly in asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants, remains challenging despite the advances. Complex and multi-aspect management involves a limited range of well-examined conventional therapies to address the heart failure and frequently coexisting arrhythmias and valvular issues. Disease-modifying treatment, RNA-based treatments, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and monoclonal antibodies targeting amyloid deposits are recent and promising innovations. This review explores the diagnostic intricacies, therapeutic dilemmas and emerging solutions in ATTR cardiomyopathy. The significance of early detection and precise, targeted approaches to enhance patient outcomes is underscored

Fraud in the Digital Manufacturing Society

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to analyze the nature of the organization of the social system in the digital age, in which the tools offered to consumers as a response their fundamental needs actually make it impossible to satisfy them. The author analyzes the way in which portable, multifunctional Internet-enabled communication devices, called “smartphones,” affect individuals by comparing them to Orwell’s “telescreens,” whose purpose was to simultaneously eavesdrop on citizens and transmit propaganda. The author points out that smartphones, unlike the devices described by George Orwell, are used to transmit information that is not strictly false but usually just worthless, making it unattainable for an individual to realize the situation in which they find themself in. Simultaneously, as part of this process the individual becomes disconnected from their corporeal emotionality, and emotions are managed for specific material or political gains

Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Poland has become a frontlinestate due to its shared borders with Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. From the onset of thewar, both the Polish state and society have provided military and humanitarian aid to theirembattled neighbour. According to the estimates, Poland’s humanitarian and militaryassistance to Ukraine amounts to nearly 5% of its GDP. Among countries offering aid,Poland has supplied Ukraine with the largest amount of heavy weaponry and hasaccepted the highest number of war refugees. Moreover, since June 2021, Poland hasfaced an influx of immigrants from Asia and Africa facilitated by Russia and Belarus. Thishybrid warfare aims to destabilize and weaken the state. In light of these challenges, survey research was conducted on a representative sample of 728 respondents using theCAWI method (Computer-Assisted Web Interview). The findings reveal that Polish societyis under stress. The conventional war in Ukraine, combined with the hybrid warfare wagedby Belarus and Russia against Poland, has impacted the psychosocial well-being of Poles. There is growing fear that the war might spread into Poland along with concerns about thefurther influx of war refugees from Ukraine and immigrants from Asia and Africa. Theeconomic consequences of the war have most significantly affected individuals with lowstatus, lacking both financial and social capital. Although the impact of the war on qualityof life has been limited, the respondents reported a perceived decline compared to thepre-war period. While some improvement is expected after the war, they anticipate it willnot return completely to pre-war levels. The research also shows that Polish society isexperiencing stress, with anxiety and depression being more prevalent among therespondents with fewer resources. People attempt to handle negative emotions byemploying active strategies for coping with stress. A decline in sympathy towardsUkrainian war refugees is evident in the frontline society. Poles express negative opinionsabout the impact of these refugees on the country. The majority of respondents havenegative attitudes towards further acceptance of Ukrainian refugees and also opposeaccepting immigrants from Asia and Africa. The results of the research also indicatesignificant social disorganization and anomie, reflected in the lack of willingness todefend their own country in the event of a foreign invasion.IDUB UKEN w Krakowi
