    Interaction between extreme weather events and mega-dams increases tree mortality and alters functional status of Amazonian forests

    Forest responses to changes in drought frequency is a critical matter for the future of Amazon forests under climate change, but equally important is the much less studied response to large floods, which may also increase tree mortality and change forest functionality. Further, forest vulnerability to flood is being exacerbated by large hydroelectric dams on Amazon rivers that put upland environments not adapted to flood at unique risk. To address this critical knowledge gap, we evaluated the effects of the extreme 2014 rainfall coupled with the newly constructed Jirau hydroelectric dam on tree survival and forest functionality, in the upper Madeira River basin. We used surveys of campinarana white-sand forests (stems >1 cm in seven 1 ha plots) conducted before and after the extreme flood to test trait-based ecological theory predictions of the impact of flood on overall community function. We found that flooding increased mortality by nearly five-fold (from 3.2% to 15.1%), mostly in smaller trees. This large mortality induced significant and consistent shifts in community function, towards species with conservative life strategies: direct comparison of trait differences between surviving and dying trees showed that survivors had smaller, high density stomata, and higher leaf dry matter content, wood density and root tissue density (RTD). Size and density of stomata and RTD were the most important predictors of species mortality rates. Synthesis and applications. Although focused on a single event in one type of forest, this work highlights the general importance, and need for further study, of interaction between climate change and mega-dams in Amazon forests. In particular, we expect that continued expansion of hydroelectric dams in Amazonia will likely intensify the impact of large floods on forests made newly vulnerable by these dams, with substantial effect on future forest functionality in expanded floodplain areas across the Basin. Hence, these interaction analyses should be required in the Brazilian legal instruments such as the environmental impact assessments and its accompanying Environmental Impacts Reports for large infrastructure projects in Amazon. © 2019 The Authors.     Asynchronous reproduction in three species of crocodilians in south-eastern Amazonia

    We studied reproduction of three species of crocodilians, Paleosuchus trigonatus, Caiman crocodilus and Melanosuchus niger, in the Xingu River, near the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam. The periods of laying and hatching of eggs were estimated for each nest before (2013–2014) and after (2016–2017) the river was dammed and the reservoir was formed. Nesting of the three species occurred between August and December, but was largely asynchronous; nest construction peaked in September for P. trigonatus, October for M. niger and November for C. crocodilus. Reservoir filling had little effect on the laying period of any of the species. Nests of P. trigonatus and M. niger were always within 0– 12 m of the bank, whereas nests of C. crocodilus, which nests later in the season when flooding is more likely, were up to 100 m from the nearest water body. There was no relationship between distance from water and the number of eggs in nests, suggesting that larger and presumably more experienced females do not lay at different distances from the bank in any of the species. © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Does dissolved organic carbon from Amazon black water (Brazil) help a native species, the tambaqui Colossoma macropomum to maintain ionic homeostasis in acidic water?

    To assess how the quality and properties of the natural dissolved organic carbon (DOC) could drive different effects on gill physiology, we analysed the ionoregulatory responses of a native Amazonian fish species, the tambaqui Colossoma macropomum, to the presence of dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 10 mg l −1 ) at both pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 in ion-poor water. The DOC was isolated from black water from São Gabriel da Cachoeira (SGC) in the upper Rio Negro of the Amazon (Brazil) that earlier been shown to protect a non-native species, zebrafish Danio rerio against low pH under similar conditions. Transepithelial potential (TEP), net flux rates of Na + , Cl − and ammonia and their concentrations in plasma and Na + , K + ATPase; v-type H + ATPase and carbonic anhydrase activities in gills were measured. The presence of DOC had negligible effects at pH 7.0 apart from lowering the TEP, but it prevented the depolarization of TEP that occurred at pH 4.0 in the absence of DOC. However, contrary to our initial hypothesis, SGC DOC was not protective against the effects of low pH. Colossoma macropomum exposed to SGC DOC at pH 4.0 experienced greater net Na + and Cl − losses, decreases of Na + and Cl − concentrations in plasma and elevated plasma ammonia levels and excretion rates, relative to those exposed in the absence of DOC. Species-specific differences and changes in DOC properties during storage are discussed as possible factors influencing the effectiveness of SGC DOC in ameliorating the effects of the acid exposure. © 2019 The Fisheries Society of the British Isle

    Modelos alométricos para estimar altura de árvores em florestas ecotonais do norte da Amazônia

    Allometric models defining the relationship between stem diameter and total tree height in the Amazon basin are important because they refine the estimates of tree carbon stocks and flow in the region. This study tests different allometric models to estimate the total tree height from the stem diameter in an ecotone zone between ombrophilous and seasonal forests in the Brazilian state of Roraima, in northern Amazonia. Stem diameter and total height were measured directly in 65 recently fallen trees (live or dead). Linear and nonlinear regressions were tested to represent the D:H relation in this specific ecotone zone. Criteria for model selection were the standard error of the estimate (Syx) and the adjusted coefficient of determination (R²adj), complemented by the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). Analysis of residuals of the most parsimonious nonlinear models showed a tendency to overestimate the total tree height for trees in the 20-40 cm diameter range. Application of our best fitted model (Michaelis-Menten) indicated that previously published general equations for the tropics that use diameter as the independent variable can either overestimate tree height in the study area by 10-29% (Weibull models) or underestimate it by 8% (climate-based models). We concluded that our site-specific model can be used in the ecotone forests studied in Roraima because it realistically reflects the local biometric relationships between stem diameter and total tree height. Studies need to be expanded in peripheral areas of northern Amazonia in order to reduce uncertainties in biomass and carbon estimates that use the tree height as a variable in general models.Modelos alométricos que definem o relacionamento entre diâmetro do tronco e a altura total da árvore na bacia amazônica são importantes porque refinam as estimativas de fluxo e estoques de carbono arbóreo na região. Este estudo testou diferentes modelos alométricos para estimar a altura total de árvores a partir do diâmetro do tronco em uma zona de ecótono entre florestas ombrófilas e sazonais no estado de Roraima, norte da Amazônia. Diâmetro do tronco e altura total foram medidos de forma direta em 65 árvores tombadas recentemente (vivas e mortas). Regressões linear e não-linear foram testadas para representar a relação D:H nesta zona específica de ecótono. Os critérios de seleção dos modelos foram o erro padrão da estimativa (Syx), o coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R²adj) e o Critério de Informação de Akaike (AIC). A análise dos resíduos dos modelos não-lineares mais parcimoniosos mostrou uma tendência de superestimar a altura total para árvores entre 20-40 cm de diâmetro do tronco. A aplicação do modelo melhor ajustado (Michaelis-Menten) indicou que equações gerais publicadas previamente para os trópicos que usam diâmetro como variável independente podem superestimar em 10-29% (modelos Weibull) ou subestimar em 8% (modelos baseados no clima) a altura das árvores na área de estudo. Nós concluímos que o modelo de melhor ajuste pode ser usado nas florestas ecotonais estudadas em Roraima, porque ele reflete realisticamente o relacionamento biométrico local entre diâmetro do tronco e altura total da árvore. É necessário expandir os estudos para outras áreas periféricas do norte da Amazônia, com o intuito de reduzir as incertezas em estimativas de biomassa e carbono arbóreo que adotem altura da árvore como uma variável em modelos gerais

    Organic residues and biochar to immobilize potentially toxic elements in soil from a gold mine in the Amazon

    Waste from gold mining (Au) is a threat to the ecosystem and human health because it contains high levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Organic waste and biochar can be used to recover contaminated soils from mining areas because they have the potential to immobilize PTEs and improve soil fertility, enabling revegetation. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficiency with which organic residues and biochar immobilize PTEs in a multicontaminated soil of a small-scale Au mine in the state of Pará. The soil from a gold mining area was mixed with different proportions (v/v) of coffee ground residues (Bcoffee), Brazil nut tegument residues (BN), açai palm stone residues (A), and Brazil nuts biochar residues to determine which treatment is best for immobilizing PTEs. The treatments with the addition of BN and A resulted in low pH and high contents of organic matter (OM) and phosphor (P) The BN increased the available levels of Ba and reduced the available levels of Ni. The addition of coffee ground residues and biochar increased the uptake of Ba, Pb, and Ni in lettuce plants compared to treatments with BN and A. Plants grown with A showed higher dry matter yield and lower absorption and translocation of PTEs. Thus, the addition of BN and A residues in PTE phytostabilization programs in PTE-multicontaminated soils is a potential possibility. © 2018 Elsevier Inc

    A procedure for assessment of the reducing capacity of plants-derived beverages based on the formation of the FeII/2,2’-bipyridine complex

    An alternative spectrophotometric ferric reducing activity power (FRAP) method for quantification of total reducing capacity (TRC) was developed. The method is based on the reduction of FeIII to FeII by antioxidant compounds containing 2,2’-bipyridine (bipy) in aqueous solution. Absorbance values recorded at 521 nm, characteristic of the Fe(bipy)3 2+ complex formed, were used to determine the TRC of some plants-derived beverages. For the teas samples, the TRC values obtained with the proposed method and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) reagent had an excellent agreement (adjusted correlation coefficient (r2) = 0.951). Concerning herbs samples, the TRC values obtained with the proposed FRAP method correlated very well with values obtained using the 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS•+) method (adjusted r2 = 0.975). It can be inferred from these results that other beverages derived from plants (e.g., beers, wines, and fruits juices) could also be analyzed with this new FRAP assay. In addition, the reducing capacity of 21 phenolic derivatives was determined with the proposed method in order to elucidate their structure-reactivity relationship. As expected, the phenolic derivative structure changes greatly the TRC values obtained with this proposed FRAP assay. © 2019 Sociedade Brasileira de Química

    Predação de Boana boans (Anura, Hylidae) por um primata frugívoro oportunista

    Although relatively common among omnivorous primates, anurophagy is still poorly documented in frugivorous species. Here we report the predation of a giant gladiator treefrog (Boana boans) by a large arboreal frugivore, the gray woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha cana). The predation event occurred in a stretch of riparian forest located in a fragmented region in Cacoal, Rondônia state, in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Anurans can be a profitable, non-contested, and relatively easily acquired alternative resource for gray woolly monkeys, helping to fulfill their demand for protein, especially in periods of fruit scarcity. This new record broadens the knowledge on the natural history and predators of the giant gladiator frog. © 2019, (publisher Name). All right reserved
