    Reassessment of Pterolepis parnassiifolia (Melastomataceae, Melastomateae) and a new combination for the genus

    We clarified the identity and nomenclature of Pterolepis parnassiifolia. A new combination, Pterolepis piatensis, is also proposed to recognize at species level the previously described P. parnassiifolia var. piatensis. We included full morphological descriptions, photographs, drawings, and discussions on the taxonomy, distribution and conservation of both species. We also included a table of main morphological characters separating P. parnassiifolia from P. piatensis. Copyright © 2019 Magnolia Pres

    Gene expression, genotoxicity, and physiological responses in an Amazonian fish, Colossoma macropomum (CUVIER 1818), exposed to Roundup® and subsequent acute hypoxia

    Roundup® (RD)is a glyphosate-based herbicide used to control weeds in agriculture, and fishponds. In the Amazon, hypoxia is a natural phenomenon in flooded areas. Beyond the challenge of hypoxia, fish need to cope with the use of pesticides as RD that increases in the aquatic environment through the leaching of agricultural areas, and in aquaculture fish tanks. Thus, there is a need to better understand the combined effects of hypoxia and RD contamination for aquatic biota. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Roundup® (RD)and subsequent acute hypoxia in the gene expression, genotoxicity, histological and physiological responses of Colossoma macropomum. Fish were individually exposed to four different treatments during 96 h: normoxia (N), hypoxia (H), RD plus normoxia (NRD), and RD plus hypoxia (HRD)(RD concentration represents 75% of LC50 - nominal concentration 15 mg L−1 to C. macropomum). HRD fishes presented down-regulation of hif-1α gene and ras oncogene, while NRD fish presented overexpression of ras; no difference occurred in hif-1α gene expression in both normoxia treatments. The glutathione-S-transferase and catalase activities increased in HRD fish liver compared to NRD. Otherwise, there was no difference in lipoperoxidation (LPO)between all treatments. Genetic Damage Index, measured throughout comet assay in erythrocytes of all treatments, presented similar values, excepted by fish exposed to NRD. As regard as hypoxic exposure, hypoxic fish presented significantly lower values, compared to HRD fishes. An increase in liver histological injuries occurred in H and HRD fish groups. In conclusion, we may affirm that C. macropomum is sensitive concerning RD contamination and that this sensitivity increases when combined with hypoxia. © 2019 Elsevier Inc

    Validação dos níveis de água fornecidos pelos satélites altimétricos Jason 1, 2 e 3 na Bacia Amazônica

    In recent years, space altimetry has contributed to improve the development of hydrological studies, overcoming the lack of data and improving studies in the area of hydrology, obtaining information in a homogeneous, continuous and frequent way on the Amazon basin which has a complex seasonal variability. The National Water Agency (ANA) has data from different linymetric stations (in situ) throughout the national territory, but they have limitations on the installation and maintenance of the stations. Data from the Jason-1/2/3 satellites complements the measurements of in situ stations, especially in regions where there are no in situ measurements and / or measures were discontinued. In this study, external validation (corresponding to the altimetric estimation of water levels of the Jason-1/2/3 satellites with data obtained at linimetric stations) and internal validation (corresponding to the altimetric estimation of water levels at crossing points of two the Jason-1/2/3 satellite) for the Amazon Basin, through the RMS (Root Mean Score) calculation. The data from the Jason-1/2/3 satellites, together with the manual selection, presented similar results to the time series obtained in linimetric stations with total RMS values for all stations below 0.40m for the external and internal validations of the satellites Jason-1/2/3Nos últimos anos, a altimetria espacial contribui para melhorar o desenvolvimento de estudos hidrológicos, superando a falta de dados e aperfeiçoando os estudos na área de hidrologia, pois, assim, obtem-se informações de forma homogênea, contínua e frequente sobre a bacia amazônica que possui complexa variabilidade sazonal. A Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA) possui dados de diferentes estações linimétricas (in situ) em todo o território nacional, porém apresenta limitações de instalação e manutenção das estações. Os dados dos satélites Jason-1/2/3 complementam as medidas das estações in situ, especialmente em regiões onde não há medidas in situ e/ou as medidas foram interrompidas. Neste estudo, foi elaborada a validação externa (correspondendo à estimativa altimétrica de níveis de água dos satélites Jason-1/2/3 com dados obtidos em estações linimétricas) e validação interna (correspondendo a estimativa altimétrica de níveis de água nos pontos de cruzamento de dois traços do satélite Jason-1/2/3) para a bacia amazônica, através do cálculo do RMS (Root Mean Score). Os dados dos satélites Jason-1/2/3, em conjunto com a seleção manual, apresentaram resultados similares às séries temporais obtidas em estações linimétricas com valores de RMSs totais para todas as estações abaixo de 0,40m para as validações externa e interna dos satélites Jason-1/2/3

    Description of the second- and third instar larvae of Platynectes (s. str.) decemnotatus (Aubé, 1838) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Agabinae: Platynectini)

    The second- and third instar larvae of Platynectes (s. str.) decemnotatus (Aubé, 1838) are described and illustrated in detail for the first time, with special emphasis on morphometry and chaetotaxy. Larvae of P. decemnotatus can be distinguished from most other Agabinae by having secondary setae on the urogomphus and share with the other known species described in detail the presence of a ventroapical spinula on antennomere 3 and the absence of an occipital suture, natatory dorsal setae on tibia and tarsus and natatory setae on urogomphus. Platynectes decemnotatus larvae differ from larvae of Agabus Leach, 1817, Hydrotrupes Sharp, 1882 (currently in Hydrotrupini), Ilybiosoma Crotch, 1873, Ilybius Erichson, 1832 and the previously described Platynectes species in having a one-segmented urogomphus, a character previously observed only in larvae of Agabinus Crotch, 1873. The second- and third instar larvae of P. decemnotatus differ from those of P. (Agametrus) curtulus (Régimbart, 1899) in having the apical lateroventral process of antennomere 3 protruding (not protruding in P. curtulus). The third-instar larva of P. decemnotatus can also be distinguished from that of P. (Gueorguievtes) decempunctatus (Fabricius, 1775) by the absence of secondary dorsal setae on the tibia.     Description of a new genus and species of Pseudothelphusidae Ortmann, 1893 (Decapoda: Brachyura) from Panama, and new records and remarks on the zoogeography of Trichodactylus quinquedentatus Rathbun, 1893 (Trichodactylidae) in Central America

    A collection of freshwater crabs from Central America resulted in the description of a new genus and two new species of pseudothelphusid crabs from Panama, and the record of the trichodactylid Trichodactylus quinquedentatus Rathbun, 1893 from Honduras and Panama. A new monotypic genus, Emberacarcinus n. gen., is erected to accommodate Potamocarcinus darienensis Magalhães, Campos & Turkay, 2013. The two new species and can be distinguished from their respective congeners by the structures of the male first gonopods: Ptychophallus bilobatus n. sp. has a bilobed mesial process whereas Potamocarcinus tapirrhynchus n. sp. exhibits a mesial process as a stout, rounded projection obliquely directed apical-cephalically and partially fused to the mesial lobe of the apical crest. The taxonomic affinities of both species with their closest congeners are treated, and the zoogeographic implication of the new records of T. quinquedentatus in Central America is discussed. © The Author(s) 2019

    Social wasps as biological control agents against diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae), a cucumber pest in Amazonas, Brazil

    Diaphania hyalinata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), popularly known as "melonworm moth", is considered a main pest of the cucumber, and depending on the intensity of infestation, the damage can reach 100%. Herein, we report the predation of D. hyalinata larvae by seven social wasp species: Brachygastra lecheguana, Polybia dimidiata, Polybia ignobilis, Polybia liliacea, Protopolybia minutissima, Synoeca surinama and Synoeca virginea, and predation of D. hyalinata pupae by Polybia liliacea. We suggest that Polybia liliacea, should be considered as a potential biological control for cucumbers, due to its high index of captured prey and intense foraging activity. © 2019 Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana.
