Since the industrial revolution, the earth has been facing increases in CO2 concentration which, consequently, have led to an increase in global average temperatures. Of the last 23 years, 22 have had temperatures above the global average. Temperature is the main factor affecting the life of ectothermic species. In addition, tropical species are expected to be especially vulnerable to temperature increases, since many of them appear to have a narrower thermal tolerance range and live closer to their thermal limits. However, to date, studies that assess the vulnerability of Amazonian species are scarcet. Among these species, fish from igarapé appear to be especially vulnerable, since they occur in an extremely stable thermal environment. Therefore, the present thesis aims to evaluate the adaptability to the increase of temperature and CO2 on the physiological parameters in Igarapé fish species. In chapter I our results showed that active species present high energy demand in order to supply maintenance costs for a high activity and, therefore, have a low thermal tolerance. In Chapter II, Hyphessobrychon melazonatus, an active species, acclimated to the extreme climate change scenario, presented great osmoregulatory disturbances, which may have important impacts on the long-term survival capacity. In fact, in chapter III we observed that all three species present metabolic alterations and acclimate cellular damages the future climatic conditions, however, H. melazonatus was the species that presented the highest mortality rates, lipid damages and reduction in the thermal safety margin. In chapter IV we showed that Pyrrhullina brevis acclimated for 180 days in the extreme scenario presents a reduction in body size, according to the third universal response to temperature. However, contrary to the OCLTT hypothesis, reduction in size is not linked to an inability to supply oxygen to tissues, but rather appears to be related to an increase in levels of cellular damage that impede growth according to life-history trade-off theory. Our results highlight the importance of public policies aimed at reducing the agents that cause climate change and the preservation of forest areas that play a fundamental role in maintaining the temperature of the Igarapés.

The Amazon biome and its ecosystems are one of the main natural heritage sites in Brazil. However, the advance of deforestation and forest degradation has caused this heritage to be significantly reduced, since promote the depletion of forests and the natural resources it offers. In addition, deforastations and forest degradation increase emissions of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change. In this context, in 2006, the Brazilian government proposed to the parties at COP 12 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a new economic strategy for environmental control. This is the compensation mechanism for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) based on voluntary donations. REDD, by its principles and guidelines, can alleviate the problems of deforestation and forest degradation, helping and making society aware of better care for the environmental heritage for the preservation of natural resources and forests for future generations. Recognizing that Protected Areas have played a major role in curbing deforestation in the region, this study is concerned with reflecting on how REDD strategies have been applied, especially in the conservation and maintenance of protected areas, as well as ways of reducing emissions and deforestation. For this, the study was developed in stages. At first, the configuration of REDD (its concepts and definitions; its evolution and historical aspects as well as its main challenges) is discussed. Subsequently, management strategies for protected areas in Brazil are discussed with a focus on the Brazilian Amazon (general aspects of management; Green Fund for the climate; conferences and agreements; protection of the Amazon and the Amazon Fund). In conclusion, aspects inherent to the use and enhancement of REDD in the Amazon context are presented for proposing future actions.O bioma Amazônia e as seus ecosssitemas são um dos principais patrimônios naturais do Brasil.

Visual encounters on line transect surveys under-detect carnivore species: Implications for assessing distribution and conservation status

We compared the distribution and occurrence of 15 carnivore species with data collected monthly over three years by trained native trackers using both sign surveys and an encounter-based, visual-distance method in a well-preserved region of southern Guyana (Amazon / Guiana Shield). We found that a rigorously applied sign-based method was sufficient to describe the status of most carnivore species populations, including rare species such as jaguar and bush dog. We also found that even when accumulation curves for direct visual encounter data reached an asymptote, customarily an indication that sufficient sampling has occurred to describe populations, animal occurrence and distribution were grossly underestimated relative to the results of sign data. While other researchers have also found that sign are better than encounters or camera traps for large felids, our results are important in documenting the failure of even intensive levels of effort to raise encounter rates sufficiently to enable statistical analysis, and in describing the relationship between encounter and sign data for an entire community of carnivores including felids, canids, procyonids, and mustelids. © Copyright: © 2019 Fragoso et al. The role of strict nature reserves in protecting genetic diversity in a semiarid vegetation in Brazil

Genetic diversity is an important component of biodiversity, providing the means for species to evolve and adapt in changing environments. Although regions that retain high genetic diversity provide ideal targets for conservation due to their evolutionary potential, they have been poorly mapped in the Neotropics. Here, we mapped genetic diversity, expressed in this study by nucleotide diversity, for five lizards, four amphibians, and one spider widely distributed in the Brazilian Caatinga, a semiarid vegetation. We identified areas that contain higher genetic diversity, which may be used to establish conservation priorities for the region, and evaluated their representativeness within strict nature reserves. Our results show that only 1.5% of the areas holding higher genetic diversity are within strict nature reserves. However, we show that very high genetic diversity regions are overrepresented inside strict nature reserves and encompass areas such as “Brejo Paraibano”, Catimbau National Park, and part of the Borborema plateau. Thus, the maintenance of biota’s evolutionary potential relies upon the inclusion of areas with higher genetic diversity in future conservation planning. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V
