Horizontal inequality with democracy in Mexico and Colombia [Desigualdad horizontal y democracia con desigualdad en México y Colombia]
Mexico and Colombia are two countries that, despite their notable differences in terms of state structuring and nation consolidation, have enormous similarities in their cultural violence that produce social closures and keep entire population groups immersed in cultural status that inhibit their mobility social, generating a process of persistent inequality. This article, based on the contrast between a theoretical corpus and a historical revision, aims to analyze this process in the light of the concept of horizontal inequality, prioritizing its perspective of cultural status. This in order to understand the symbolic forms that support stereotyping processes, and that according to the results, account for a framework that ends up defining the governed subject and the governable subject, in clear expression of a democracy with inequality. It is concluded that in both countries the cultural devices arising from their colonial origin, by designating attributes to the entire groups, ended up perpetuating inequality; in the case of Mexico, based on the concept of ethnic citizenship, which exalted the ancient indigenous but not the contemporary; in the case of Colombia through an ideology of equality represented by biological miscegenation. © 2019, Universidad del Zulia
Cross cultural management challenges in the internationalisation activities of Medellin's SMES [Desafios de gestão intercultural nas actividades de internacionalização de micro-empresas de Medellín] [Retos de gestión intercultural en las actividades de internacionalización de microempresas de Medellín]
This document analyses cross-cultural management challenges in the internationalisation activities of small to medium enterprises in Medellin, Colombia. Electronic questionnaires were used to collect information from five micro-enterprises in the services industry. Their responses were subsequently studied using a partially ordered meta-matrix using an analytical-synthetic method. The work differs from others that focus on business skills for survival, because it emphasises in exploring advanced skills related to growth and profitability, that is, cross-cultural management in international management. Eleven challenges are listed to describe the capabilities that SME's in Medellin must build on to make its internationalisation activities more effective. © 2013 Universidad ICESI. Landau damping in cilyndrical inhomogeneous plasmas
We study the Landau damping for electromagnetic waves in a inhomogeneous cylindrical plasma in the presence of a strong axial magnetic field. For this task we use the kinetic theory for plasmas. This kind of phenomena can not be studied using only macroscopic fluid models. The results of our work can be relevant to identify the behavior of different electromagnetic normal modes propagating through the system, in particular, the energy of the damped modes can be transferred to the plasma particles through resonant interactions and according to the mode polarization can be used in modern particle accelerators based in plasmas. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
Sulfur Dioxide Effects on Human Atrial Action Potential: In Silico Study
Exposure to air pollutants agents, like sulfur dioxide (SO2), has significant effects on the cardiovascular system. Studies have shown that SO2 blocks ICaL and increases the INa, IK1 and Ito currents, which implies action potential duration (APD) decrease, favoring the initiation of atrial arrhythmias. This study aims to assess the effects of the SO2 at different concentrations on human atrial action potential, using computational simulation. For this, based on experimental data, we developed concentration-dependent equations to simulate the SO2 effects on the currents. They were incorporated in the Courtemanche model of human atrial cell and in a 2D model of atrial tissue. S1-S2 cross-field protocol was applied to initiate a rotor. SO2 concentrations from 0 to 100 ? M were implemented. Our results are in agreement with results from non-human in vitro and in vivo studies. The SO2 causes APD shortening and loss of plateau phase in a fraction that increases as the concentration increases. In the 2D model, a rotor can be generated from 50 ? M of SO2 concentration, showing a pro-arrhythmic effect. © 2018 Creative Commons Attribution
"With Jesus in our mouth": Fear and daily life in societies at war. Tumaco (Nariño, Colombia) ["Con el Jesús en la boca": Miedo y vida cotidiana en sociedades en guerra. El caso de Tumaco (Nariño, Colombia)]
This paper develops an analytical exploration about fear as structuring aff ection of everyday life in a community at war. We examine how fear structures the everyday life in Tumaco (Nariño, Colombian South-Western). To do so, we describe how fear defi nes relational and subordination logics that afterwards tend to be normalized becoming what sustains relations of domination. In this exploration of fear as guiding source of action, daily stories about atrocities emerge as decisive for the coordination of social action. The paper concludes that fear has a performative capacity, originated in its symbolic power to constitute social realities in which routines and extraordinary events merge. © 2019 Programa de Pos-Graduacao em Antropologia Social - IFCH-UFRGS
A Gamified Proposal for Software Risk Analysis in Agile Methodologies
In the conventional software development environment, risks are generally managed through a risk management framework; however, application of risk management in agile projects is limited despite its elaborate discussions in the board rooms among professionals. Moreover, risk mitigation used to monitor a project continuously through effective communication is limited. Risk management is critical for achieving success in software projects. It is an improvement process implemented through the institutionalization of best practices among software development teams. Such institutionalization assists in reducing costs, achieving higher levels of client satisfaction, increasing productivity, and reducing project failure. All of the above, it s necessary define risk management techniques for minimize the effort and guaranteeing the respect of the agile manifesto. Using the risk analysis, reviewing techniques to be adopted by the agile teams and incorporating improvement strategies such as the gamification could be an alternative method to obtain a risk analysis proposal for agile environments. This proposal aims to develop a strategy for analyzing the project risks by a software development team, incorporating agile methodologies, and applying gamification elements for motivating team members to reduce the time for completing the risk management cycle. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019
A novel energy-efficient machine to compress inorganic residues in eco-bricks as a sustainable construction strategy for low-cost housing
UNESCO has set the Sustainable Developing Goals (SDG) to promote good practices in different areas. The construction industry has evolving to the use of alternative and eco-friendly materials, enhancing the sustainable growth of the cities. One of the main social problems in developing countries arises on the lack of housing at affordable prices, this is reflected as a result of a situation of poverty and exclusion of low-income communities. The present work describes the development of a novel device for the compression of plastic waste in PET bottles, also denominated eco-bricks. The device allows the compaction of plastic laminates and sachets inside bottles of different sizes. Based on a social context, the compactor device was designed for manual operation without the use of electric power, portability, ease of usage and safe operation. Another outcome of this technology is the educational strategy based on the manufacturing of eco-bricks that promotes environmental responsibility that aims at reducing pollution and the indiscriminate and non-responsible use of non-renewable resources in urban and rural environments. The device was submitted for its consideration as an invention patent and therefore granted. © 2019 AISTI

Density functional theory studies of the adsorption of Cr (VI) on Fe-(hydr) oxide: Gibbs free energies and pH effect
Adsorption of chromium (VI) on iron oxides is a potential removal method from industrial wastewater. Cr (VI) is a toxic specie for human health due to its easy mobility in the environment. Currently, US EPA drinking water standards establish a maximum Cr level of 100 ?g/L. Since the adsorption process occurs in the solid/liquid interface, pH is one of the main factors that affect this process and it is a very important parameter to study. Understanding the adsorption process and the molecular geometries of complexes, is essential to predict the environmental transport of Cr (VI) and to develop appropriate models for the remediation of Cr (VI). Therefore, in this work, we describe the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto Fe-hydr (oxides) through computational methods. A complete characterization of the adsorbed surface complexes was performed, and three different pH conditions were simulated (acidic, intermediate and basic). It was found that, the thermodynamic favourability of the different adsorbed complexes was directly related to the pH. Bidentate complex (BB) was the most thermodynamically favourable complex with an adsorption energy of -143.3 kJ/mol under acidic pH conditions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
Mediterranean diet adherence in Colombian university population [Adherencia a la dieta mediterranea en poblacion universitaria Colombiana]
Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the level of Mediterranean diet in two groups of university students, of two different cities of Colombia, and the relation to their socioeconomic status. Materials and methods: The KIDMED Questionnaire was administered to 795 students of a private university in Bogota, and Monteria, Colombia. Results and Discussion: Showed that only 9,3% of the participants had an optimum adherence to the Mediterranean diet in Bogota, and 29,3% in Monteria. Most of the participants showed to had a medium adherence to improve to Mediterranean diet in both cities, 60,3% in Bogota and 63% in Monteria. The other 30,3% of the participants of Bogota and 7,7% of Monteria students, showed a poor adherence. Differences between the socioeconomic status and gender, in relation with the Mediterranean diet was identified. Conclusion: Therefore, it is concluded that the university student's Mediterranean diet adherence may be related not only to socioeconomic factors, but also to nutrition habits. © 2019 Sociedad espanola de dietetica.
