First-principles calculation of volatile organic compound adsorption on carbon nanotubes: Furan as case of study

    No full text
Sensing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a growing research topic because of the concern about their hazard for the environment and health. Furan is a VOC produced during food processing, and it has been classified as a risk molecule for human health and a possible biomarker of prostate cancer. The use of carbon nanotubes for VOCs sensing systems design could be a good alternative. In this work, a theoretical evaluation of the interactions between furan and zigzag single-wall carbon nanotubes takes into account different positions and orientations of the furan molecule, within a density-functional theory first-principles approach. The van der Waals interactions are considered using different exchange-correlation functionals (BH,C09, DRSLL and KBM). The results indicate that vdW-functionals do not significantly affect geometry; however, the binding energy and the distance between furan and nanotube are strongly dependent on the selected exchange-correlation functional. On the other hand, the effects of single and double vacancies on carbon nanotube are considered. It was found that the redistribution of charge around the single-vacancy affects the bandgap, magnetic moment, and binding energy of the complex, while furan interaction with a double-vacancy does not considerably change the electronic structure of the system. Our results suggest that to induce changes in the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes by furan, it is necessary to change the nanotube surface, for example, by means of structural defects. © 2021, Korean Carbon Society

Mapping spatial variability of quality of life in the city of Medellín, Colombia

    No full text
The study of subjective welfare or perceived quality of life (QoL) is currently a topic of interest in the social sciences due to its implications for the design and evaluation of social and economic policies. To this end, this paper focuses on two main tasks: a) to measure the QoL of households in the city of Medellín, Colombia, using conventional multivariate statistical techniques to construct an indicator; and b) by means of the indicator, determine if the living standards of households in Medellín are distributed randomly in space or present a significant association of similar (dissimilar) values between nearby zones. The results reveal a spatially varying distribution of QoL in the city of Medellín and clusters of neighborhoods where, depending on the indicator variables, the best and worst QoL as perceived by the city’s inhabitants is concentrated. The best conditions are found to be concentrated in the central-western and south-eastern areas of the city, while the rest of the city has the greatest needs. © 2020 Ascociacion Internacional de Economia Aplicada. Promoting effect of tungsten carbide on the catalytic activity of Cu for CO2reduction

    No full text
The adsorption of H, CO2, HCOO, O and CO on copper monolayers and submonolayers supported on hexagonal WC(0001) surfaces has been investigated. Calculations have been performed using density functional theory with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange correlation functional and D2 van der Waals corrections. In addition, dipole corrections were also included. The catalytic properties of supported Cu on both carbon- and metal-terminated WC(0001) surfaces were explored. On carbon-terminated WC(0001) surfaces, Cu tends to be oxidized, while on the metallic terminated surface, it gains charge. The results indicate that all studied Cu/WC(0001) surfaces bind all adsorbates stronger than the extended Cu(111). For CO, the binding energy is so large in some cases (1.6-2.2 eV) that it could potentially lead to catalyst deactivation. Nevertheless, surfaces with an adsorbed Cu monolayer, CuML, are less prone to this deactivation, since there are not WC surface atoms; and thus, the contribution of strong CO adsorption from the support does not play a role. Energy barriers for HCOO formation, relative to direct dissociation barriers of CO2, indicate that a hydrogen-assisted reduction path is more likely to occur on Cu/WC(0001) materials, with CuML/metallic termination being the most active system for this reaction path. On the other hand, CO2 adsorption on CuML surfaces is slightly weaker on a C-terminated surface than on a metal-terminated surface, although both surfaces have similar dissociation barriers. This fact together with the weaker CO adsorption on CuML/C-terminated WC(0001) than on metal-terminated WC(0001) suggests that the former system may be a better catalyst for CO2 reduction, due to the lower surface poisoning by the CO2 dissociation products. Possible deactivation of Cu/WC(0001) materials may be prevented by the introduction of hydrogen into the system, thus promoting the formation of HCOO and avoiding CO and O formation. © 2020 the Owner Societies

Risk and suicidal ideation and its relationship with impulsivity and depression in school adolescent [Riesgo e Ideación Suicida y su Relación con la Impulsividad y la Depresión en Adolescentes Escolares]

    No full text
A non-experimental cross-sectional design and explanatory study were proposed in order to analyze the statistical relationship between the suicide risk (SR) and suicidal ideation (SI) and the depression and impulsivity variables in schooling adolescents. 179 subjects (M=14.84; SD=0.82) between 14 and 17 years old participated. Variables were measured using the Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale (SRS), the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation (PANSI) Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-I), and the Plutchik´s Impulsivity Scale (IS). The results show a suicide risk factor of 20.7%. Moreover, significant positive correlations (p<.001) were found among SR, negative and global SI, depression and impulsivity. The positive SI considered as a protective factor showed a negative correlation with respect to SR, the negative and global SI, depression and impulsivity. The structural equation modeling analysis applied showed depression is the mediator variable between SR, SI and impulsivity (χ2(2)=3.1; p=.212; CFI=.985; NFI=.963; TLI=.926; GFI=.987; RMSEA=.056). © 2020 AIDEP.
