Applying gamification elements to build teams for software development

    No full text
Nowadays computer games are applied beyond entertainment. Gamification, the application of game elements in non-game environments supports behavioural studies in different disciplines including software engineering, the area in which collaborative work has become a fundamental key. The most used gamification elements in software development environments were analysed from two perspectives: (i) team building or reinforcement activities; and (ii) regarding a set of people's interactive styles. Then, interactive styles with software engineering roles were related in order to be able to identify scenarios that conform a model to build highly effective teams. The three analyses together allow identifying proper gamification elements for modelling scenarios to support the creation of highly effective teams in the software development domain. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and Technology. Toward the design of efficient adsorbents for Hg2+ removal: Molecular and thermodynamic insights

    No full text
A systematic DFT study was performed to evaluate the effect of oxygenated functional groups for Hg2+ adsorption in aqueous systems. This work includes several aspects usually neglected in many current works, namely, ground-state multiplicity, solvation effects, establishment of thermodynamic parameters, atomic charge transfer, and modeling of infrared spectra. In addition, two carbonaceous models were studied to account for both the effect of the carbonaceous matrix and the oxygenated functional groups on the Hg2+ binding. Adsorption energies indicated that Hg2+ adsorption on the unsaturated model is favored in the following order: phenol > lactone > semiquinone > carboxyl, whereas for the saturated model, the Hg2+ adsorption energy decrease order is: carboxyl > semiquinone > lactone. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed that the adsorption process is spontaneous (unsaturated model), while the infrared spectra provided an insight at the atomic level about the experimentally reported bands. Our results contributed to a deeper understanding of the current experimental information on the effect of the surface functional groups on the Hg2+ adsorption over carbonaceous materials as different active sites can be present on oxygenated carbonaceous materials for metal adsorption. The results also create new ways to improve the performance of adsorption capability of mercury and other pollutants. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Understanding mechanisms in the adsorption of lead and copper ions on chili seed waste in single and multicomponent systems: a combined experimental and computational study

    No full text
In the current work, a deep study to understand the adsorption phenomena occurring in single and multicomponent systems was conducted by using spectroscopic characterization, and computational tools. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of chili seed is higher for Pb2+ (48 mg/g) than Cu2+ (4.1 mg/g) ions in single systems. However, the adsorption study in multicomponent systems provides important conclusions of the concentration effect of the metal ions, showing a significant antagonistic and competitive effect of both ions under equivalent concentrations of them (qPb2+ is 56% reduced) or high concentration of Pb2+ (qCu2+ is 50% reduced). Computational results correlated well with the experimental ones and evidenced all interactions proposed from spectroscopy results, accounting for the occurrence of complexation and electrostatic mechanisms between metal ions and the surface oxygenated functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carboxylate) onto chili seed. Chemistry quantum descriptors supported the reactivity behavior of the chemical species implicated. All results evidenced that Pb2+ and Cu2+ adsorption on chili seed surface is governed by the occurrence of combined ionic exchange, π-interaction, complexation, and electrostatic attraction. © 2021, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

Software development companies are interested in the implementation of best practices for facilitating their processes improvement with the purpose to increase the quality of their software products. However, software process improvement initiatives are complex because of look for modifying the conditions and behaviors of the professionals in charge of these initiatives. Therefore, exist a constant search of strategies for decreasing change resistance and gamification is one of the most used for helping to influence people's behaviors and contribute to reach the improvement goals. This work presents a web platform called the 'Planetary exploration system', where work team members can explore different worlds through mission accomplishment. Such missions allow winning points, achievements and experiences for ascending in the positions board and obtain virtual and real rewards. The platform can be integrated with software project management systems, incident management systems or support tools for other SPI processes. © 2020 AISTI

The diet composition of asplanchna girodi (Ploima, aspanchnidae) in an equatorial high andean reservoir in Colombia based on field observations [Composición de la dieta de asplanchna girodi (Ploima, asplanchnidae) en un embalse altoandino ecuatorial en Colombia basado en observaciones de campo]

Asplanchna girodi (de Guerne, 1888) is a predatory rotifer of wide distribution in temperate and tropical freshwater ecosystems. Of this species, little is known about its diet and its food preferences under natural conditions, since most of the work related to this aspect has been carried out under laboratory conditions. During a short monitoring program at La García Reservoir, a high Andean equatorial reservoir located in the central region of the department of Antioquia (Colombia), in which this species reached a total density of 2.296,2 ind.L-1, studied the composition of the A. girodi diet based only on the direct observation, under the microscope, of the organisms contained in the stomachs of all the individuals present in the simples. Between June and September 2014, integrated samples composed of five depths were taken monthly at three monitoring stations in the entire water column, with a sampling bottle of 10 L capacity. The collected material was filtered through a 30µm plankton net of mesh eye. It was found that A. girodi, presented a wide trophic preference that included the foraging of a dinoflagellate (Ceratium, Schrank), five species of rotifers and a cladoceran. These results lead to the conclusion that A. girodi is possibly an opportunistic species, since consumption is directed at the species with the highest availability (in this case Ceratium) and with the greatest energy savings, since no investment is made in the search for specific prey and in turn would become an important factor in controlling phytoplankton populations. © 2020, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. AMDock: a versatile graphical tool for assisting molecular docking with Autodock Vina and Autodock4

    No full text
AMDock (Assisted Molecular Docking) is a user-friendly graphical tool to assist in the docking of protein-ligand complexes using Autodock Vina and AutoDock4, including the option of using the Autodock4Zn force field for metalloproteins. AMDock integrates several external programs (Open Babel, PDB2PQR, AutoLigand, ADT scripts) to accurately prepare the input structure files and to optimally define the search space, offering several alternatives and different degrees of user supervision. For visualization of molecular structures, AMDock uses PyMOL, starting it automatically with several predefined visualization schemes to aid in setting up the box defining the search space and to visualize and analyze the docking results. One particularly useful feature implemented in AMDock is the off-target docking procedure that allows to conduct ligand selectivity studies easily. In summary, AMDock's functional versatility makes it a very useful tool to conduct different docking studies, especially for beginners. The program is available, either for Windows or Linux, at https://github.com/Valdes-Tresanco-MS . REVIEWERS: This article was reviewed by Alexander Krah and Thomas Gaillard
