Financing Businesses for Sustainable Growth: Economic, Social, and Environmental Drivers With A Gender Approach
This study examines the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices and financial performance, incorporating a gender perspective. While ESG frameworks enhance investment attractiveness, the role of female leadership remains underexplored. Using a sample of EuroStoxx 300, the data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study assessed financial capital, investment attractiveness, and sustainability performance with gender representation as a moderating variable. The results confirm a positive relationship between financial capital and economic/social efficiency, while environmental efficiency presents mixed effects. Female board representation strengthens the link between investment attractiveness and financial capital. These findings contribute to the literature by integrating gender as a strategic factor in ESG-financing research and highlight the practical implication that companies should promote gender-diverse leadership to maximize the financial and strategic benefits of sustainable practices.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU
The influence of specimen thickness on the midplane plastic zone using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data
Analysing and measuring the plastic zone surrounding a fatigue crack tip is essential for a comprehensive understanding of fatigue and fracture behaviour. In this work, the strain field near the crack tip was mapped for two samples having different thicknesses, namely 3.3 mm and 12 mm, using in-situ synchrotron diffraction during a fatigue test. Full diffraction pattern refinement enabled strain maps with a resolution of up to 80 µm. Assuming a two dimensional state of stress or strain, depending on the sample thickness and due to the limitations of the experiment, the von Mises equivalent stresses and strains in the region ahead and surrounding the crack tip were mapped at each stage. The equivalent strain energy density rule is used, taking into account cyclic material parameters, to understand the elasto-plastic fields around the crack-tip. The plastic zones were then characterised and compared to simple plane stress and strain analytical models of the plastic zones. The plastic zones closely align with the analytical models in size, though shape variations exist. The sample thickness was found to have a strong influence on the final shape and size of the PZ.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU
Literary Analysis Paragraphs: Advice & Practice
PIE22-104This presentation was created for students of Literatura Norteamericana I at the University of Málaga. Its aim is to offer practical guidance on writing literary analysis paragraphs. Drawing on Paul Headrick’s approach (2014), it provides tips for structuring effective, coherent paragraphs while avoiding redundancy
Explaining preferences for EU integration: Theory and empirical evidence
We present and empirically test a model that explains how European citizens form their preferences for integration, which is crucial for understanding the public support for EU advancement. The model incorporates varying levels of information and awareness of how EU legislation impacts national politics as well as economic considerations. The empirical results indicate that European citizens tend to be aware of the interplay between EU laws and national legislation. We reach this conclusion by showing that further EU integration is supported by citizens who believe EU legislation amends their national policies. By contrast, Euroscepticism emerges among citizens who perceive the EU as interfering in their domestic politics. Our theory and empirical evidence suggest that citizens see EU legislation as correcting or undermining national politics, contrasting with other theories that directly link support for integration and Euroscepticism to left- and right-wing ideological orientations.Funding for open acces charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBUA. Hospitalised children with COVID-19 display an aberrant intestinal microbiota and a shift in faecal compounds related with the metabolism of vitamins and lipids
The SARS-CoV-2 virus and its rapid spread have made it a global health concern. The aim of this was to investigate the microbial and metabolic faecal profiles of paediatric patients hospitalised for COVID-19 to try to identify biomarkers of predisposition to severity. The study included 16 patients (aged 4–14 years old) from six different Spanish hospitals and 20 age-matched healthy controls. The gut microbiota was characterised by sequencing of 16S rDNA amplicons and internal transcribed space amplicons, while the metabolic profile was analysed by liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry. A different microbial profile was observed between patients and controls, with a significantly higher abundance of sequences belonging to the phyla Bacteroidota and Pseudomonadota in patients. A different metabolic profile was observed between the two groups. Non-infected children had higher faecal levels of vitamins such as niacin, thiamine, and vitamin D3 derivatives, which were negatively correlated with the abundance of pathogenic bacteria, such as members of Enterobacteriaceae. Hospitalisation due to SARS-CoV-2 infection in children was associated with changes in the gut microbiota and an altered metabolomic profile. For the first time, several relevant biological compounds were found to be reduced in the faeces of children hospitalised with COVID-19 compared to healthy controls
Vulnerable groups and disinformation. An analysis of the Andalusian reality
