Enhancing Professional Development of English-Medium-Instruction Business Content Teacher in China's Higher Education: Developing Tailored Training Frameworks.
This dissertation investigates the emerging professional group of English-Medium Instruction Business Content Teachers (EMIBCTs) in Chinese higher education, addressing their dual competency requirements in business knowledge and English proficiency. Distinct from traditional English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers, EMIBCTs face unique challenges in integrating specialised business content with English instruction. The research employs Needs Analysis Theory, Lifelong Learning Theory, and Teacher Professional Development Theory to explore their training needs, professional identity, and instructional practices.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study includes surveys of 228 teachers and 185 training participants, along with in-depth interviews with eight representative teachers. EMIBCTs are categorised into four groups based on their English proficiency and business expertise. Findings reveal gaps in EMI methodologies, bilingual instruction, and ELF awareness, with national policies often mandating immersive English teaching but providing limited explicit pedagogical guidance. The study highlights that many EMIBCTs perceive themselves as language instructors rather than business content experts, indicating a need for systematic training and professional development.
A differentiated training framework is proposed, emphasising conceptual knowledge (ELF awareness, CLIL principles), skill-based knowledge (language enhancement, translanguaging), and professional development (career exploration, collaborative platforms). These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, curriculum designers, and individual teachers to enhance EMI implementation. The research contributes to the internationalisation of Chinese higher education and addresses global challenges of non-native English-speaking educators delivering content in English
Andamios de paz. Educación para las paces a partir de sentidos y agenciamientos territoriales vinculados en las narrativas de vida de maestras y maestros, caso Institución Educativa Puerto Iris, del municipio de Puerto Concordia, departamento del Meta, Colombia.
La presente investigación doctoral busca ser un aporte al campo de la Educación Para las Paces. En términos generales, se trata de comprender los sentidos y agenciamientos de paces vinculados en las narrativas de vida de maestros y maestras que, inmersos en las instituciones educativas del departamento del Meta, Colombia, evidencian acciones pedagógicas en clave de paz positiva e imperfecta, favoreciendo con ello la construcción de una propuesta de escenarios deseables y lineamientos educativos para las paces.
En tiempos recientes, con ocasión del “acuerdo final para la terminación del conflicto y la construcción de una paz estable y duradera” del año 2016, firmados entre las FARC-EP y el Estado colombiano, para los territorios perjudicados por el conflicto interno armado, se ha puesto en marcha la implementación de una planificación estratégica a quince años, con la misión de ayudar a dar estabilidad y potencializar la transformación de las regiones, donde aflora una aguda pobreza, economías ilegales y poca presencia del Estado, entre otros factores sociales e institucionales, a tal iniciativa se le ha denominado Plan de Desarrollo Territorial (Pdet).
En este plano, en el Departamento del Meta -ubicado geográficamente en la región de la Orinoquía colombiana, lugar donde se desarrolló la investigación- se han priorizado ocho municipios para la realización de Programas de Desarrollo con Enfoque Territorial (Pdet): Uribe, Vista Hermosa, Mesetas, Puerto Lleras, Puerto Rico, Puerto Concordia, Mapiripán y La Macarena; se trata de paisajes y territorios que históricamente han sido escenario de algunos acuerdos de paz que a la fecha se han establecido y firmado, entre los diversos grupos armados ilegales y los gobiernos presidenciales de turno
Quality-driven management of next-generation mobile networks for advanced multimedia services.
The rapid emergence of next-generation use cases, including metaverse applications, has redefined the landscape of services and applications, enabling immersive experiences across sectors such as education, industry, and entertainment. These innovations demand advanced mobile network capabilities, including high data rates, reduced latency, and enhanced reliability. While 5G technologies address some of these requirements, they also introduce complexities in managing diverse, resource-intensive services. Traditional network management strategies, reliant on human expertise and Operations Support Systems (OSS), have evolved toward automated solutions like Self-Organizing Networks (SON), yet challenges persist.
This thesis addresses these challenges by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques into next-generation network management. Specifically, it focuses on the end-to-end (E2E) optimization of service performance through Key Quality Indicators (KQIs), which capture both network and user-centric metrics. A comprehensive literature review identifies KQIs critical for advanced services such as Cloud Gaming, 360-degree video, and Cloud Virtual Reality. Empirical analysis is conducted using testbeds under controlled conditions to assess service performance across various wireless technologies, mobility scenarios, and radio conditions.
The research emphasizes the 360-degree video service to demonstrate the efficacy of ML in network optimization. A dataset generated from these studies enables the development of an ML-based framework to predict KQIs using radio and network data. The framework incorporates the proposed PET metric, which balances prediction accuracy and computational efficiency. Additionally, a resource optimization mechanism integrates ML-based resource models and numerical optimization to ensure Service-Level Agreement (SLA) compliance while balancing Quality of Experience (QoE) and resource usage
Effectiveness of Augmented Reality in the Teaching of Health University Students: Quasi-Experimental Study.
Proyecto de Innovación Educativa de la Universidad de Málaga (PIE22-224)We aimed to analyze the degree of usability of two augmented reality applications and to compare the academic performance between the control group and the experimental group at the Universities of Cádiz and Málaga. The students at the University of Málaga used the Zapworks augmented reality software, while those at the University of Cádiz used the Aumentaty augmented reality software for their respective experimental groups. The secondary objective was to measure the relationships between all the studied variables.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental design with a posttest as the only evaluation measure. We followed the SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) statement and the ethical and legal aspects of the Principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. An intervention was carried out using two augmented reality applications on the subject of General Procedures in Physiotherapy II at the Universities of Málaga and Cádiz.
Results: A total of 199 participants took part in the study. Demographic variables, ratings, and usability were assessed, followed by statistical analysis, with the results and their interpretation being described in the study. Significant differences (P<.001) were found in the ratings at both the universities. In addition, significant differences (P<.001) were found between the experimental group and the control group. Regarding the degree of usability in the univariate analysis, no significant differences were found (P=.049). A multiple regression analysis of the rating and usability was performed. The rating showed significant differences, with a beta of 1.4 (P<.001), and usability was also significant (P=.03) in favor of the Aumentaty group.Conclusions: Significant differences were observed in those who used augmented reality compared to the control group, with higher values observed in the University of Cádiz. There are no correlations between the variables of usability and qualifications
Byzantine belt buckles from the necropolis of the villa of Los Villaricos (Mula, Murcia) (7th century AD)
En este trabajo se estudian dos broches de cinturón del siglo VII d. C. procedentes del cementerio tardoantiguo que se sitúa sobre la pars urbana de la villa romana de los Villaricos (Mula, Murcia). A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo V, dicha necrópo- lis se emplazó junto al antiguo triclinium, convertido en edificio de culto. Se trata de dos piezas de indumentaria personal, varian- tes de los tipos Hippo Regius y Siracusa de la serie bizantina habitual en todo el Mediterráneo. El estudio formal, técnico, decorativo y arqueometalúrgico plantea su producción en un taller hispánico. Su hallazgo durante las últimas campañas de excavación y, con ello, el hecho de que cuenten con un contexto espacial y cronológico preciso respaldado por dataciones radio- carbónicas, ofrecen una nueva base para el análisis, dado que gran parte de los broches conocidos hasta ahora en la península ibérica son hallazgos antiguos o pertenecen a colecciones de origen diverso
Diálogos Visuais: Intertextualidade entre artes plásticas e cinema em Euphoria (HBO, 2019)
Este trabajo analiza la intertextualidad entre las artes plásticas y el cine en la serie Euphoria (HBO, 2019-) y explora cómo sus referencias visuales contribuyen a la construcción narrativa. El objeto de estudio es la secuencia inicial del cuarto episodio de la segunda temporada, donde se recrean imágenes icónicas del arte y el cine. El objetivo principal es identificar y examinar estos referentes visuales, su función en el relato y su impacto en la caracterización de los personajes. Metodológicamente, se aplica un análisis textual audiovisual, seguido de una comparación de los planos con sus fuentes artísticas y cinematográficas. Los resultados indican que estas referencias enriquecen la estética visual y aportan nuevas capas de significado a la historia. La investigación concluye que Euphoria reinterpreta el arte desde una perspectiva pop, resignificándolo en un contexto contemporáneo. The impact of audit fees and auditor tenure on company valuation: An analysis of large U.S. audit firms.
This study aims to investigate the impact of audit fees and auditor tenure on company valuation, focusing on large U.S. audit firms. It examines how these factors influence firm value as measured by Tobin’s Q, providing insights into the broader implications of financial governance practices on investor perceptions and market dynamics. The research employs a panel data regression methodology and the generalized method of moments (GMM) to analyze data from companies included in the S&P 500 index over the period 2012 to 2021. This approach allows for robust statistical analysis and controls for potential autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity issues in the dataset. The findings indicate that auditor tenure does not have a statistically significant impact on corporate value. This suggests that the length of the audit engagement, in isolation, may not materially influence how investors perceive the reliability of financial reports. However, lower audit fees may indicate efficient cost management, which is positively perceived by the market. This study contributes to the auditing literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between auditor tenure, audit fees, and company valuation. It highlights the importance of implementing efficient audit fee structures to enhance firm value, offering practical implications for corporate governance and policy formulation. By demonstrating the positive impact of audit practices on firm value, this study underscores the broader social benefit of financial transparency and integrity, fostering a trustworthy investment environment and contributing to the overall health of the economy. The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm Can Require Exponential Time to Optimize Linear Functions
QAOA is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm to solve optimization problems in gate-based quantum computers. It is based on a variational quantum circuit that can be interpreted as a discretization of the annealing process that quantum annealers follow to find a minimum energy state of a given Hamiltonian. This ensures that QAOA must find an optimal solution for any given optimization problem when the number of layers, p, used in the variational quantum circuit tends to infinity. In practice, the number of layers is usually bounded by a small number. This is a must in current quantum computers of the NISQ era, due to the depth limit of the circuits they can run to avoid problems with decoherence and noise. In this paper, we show mathematical evidence that QAOA requires exponential time to solve linear functions when the number of layers is less than the number of different coefficients of the linear function n. We conjecture that QAOA needs exponential time to find the global optimum of linear functions for any constant value of p, and that the runtime is linear only if p >= n. We conclude that we need new quantum algorithms to reach quantum supremacy in quantum optimization.Universidad de Málag
Disassembling an experimental artifact in aphasia: why phonemic errors with words and semantic errors with numbers?
There is broad consensus as to the significance of speech errors in aphasia. The analysis of errors is understood to provide clear clues for clinical diagnosis, the identification of those cognitive-linguistic processes affected, and the corresponding impaired cerebral structures. However, the STEPS, a phenomenon in which a person with aphasia produces more phonological errors with words (e.g., “tamle” for “table”) but more semantic errors with number words (e.g., “thirteen” for “forty-two”), casts doubt on this consensus view. In this paper two studies are described, in which we explore whether STEPS is in fact a result of the lack of rigorous control over the materials compared (words versus numbers) and the evaluation conditions. Two persons, one with a reproduction conduction aphasia and the other with a repetition conduction aphasia, participated in the studies. Study 1 explored the role of memory load in the emergence of STEPS by eliciting the repetition of pairs of semantically-unrelated words. In Studies 2a and 2b, our participants were asked to produce sequences of high- and low-frequency words from one semantic category (colors), and this was compared to the performance in multi-digit number production tasks. The results showed that sequences of high-frequency colors, like multi-digit numbers, were produced mainly with semantic errors, whereas sequences of low-frequency colors showed a mixed pattern with many phonemic and semantic errors. It seems that the production of semantic errors and the absence of phonemic errors in multi-digit numbers that give rise to STEPS is an experimental artifact caused by the combination of several factors: the use of semantically-related high-frequency words, produced cyclically under high-memory-demand conditions. These findings contribute substantially to the current discussion of language production models and allow for a deeper understanding of the neurocognitive processes that underly speech errors in aphasia.I Plan Propio de Investigación, Transferencia y Divulgación CientíficaJunta de Andalucí
