Gait recognition has gained attention for its ability to identify individuals from afar. Current state-of-the-art approaches predominantly utilize visual information, such as silhouettes, or a combination of visual data and basic body pose information, including skeleton joint coordinates. However, the role of human pose in gait recognition is still underexplored, often leading to poorer results compared to visual approaches. In this work, we propose a novel hierarchical limb-based representation that enhances the depiction of body pose and can be applied to various pose descriptors. Our representation consists of three hierarchical levels: full body, body limbs (arms and legs), and middle limbs (forearms, lower arms, thighs, and shins). This structure enriches the gait description of the overall pose by incorporating the specific movements of each limb. Particularly, we investigate the application of our hierarchical arrangement using two different rich pose descriptors: heatmaps derived from 2D body skeletons and a dense representation obtained from pixel-wise estimation of body pose (i.e DensePose). Furthermore, we introduce the PoseGaitGL family of models to better leverage the features derived from our pose representations. By employing our hierarchical pose representations, the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results in pose-based gait recognition. Thus, the hierarchical heatmap-based and hierarchical DensePose representations attain Rank-1 accuracy of 82.2% and 92.0%, respectively, on the cross-view setup of CASIA-B, and 99.3% and 99.8%, respectively, on TUM-GAID, establishing a new benchmark for pose-based methods. The version of record of this article, first published in Scientific Reports, is available online at Publisher’s website: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-025-02351-xDeploying deep learning models on edge devices offers advantages in terms of data security and communication latency. However, optimizing these models to achieve fast computing speeds without sacrificing accuracy can be challenging, especially in video surveillance applications where real-time processing is crucial. In this study, we investigate the deployment of gait recognition models as a multi-objective selection problem in which we seek to simultaneously minimize several objectives, such as latency and energy consumption, while maintaining accuracy. The decision space of a problem comprises all models that can be built by varying parameters, such as the size of the model, the operating frequency of the device, and the precision of the operations. From this problem definition, a subset of Pareto optimal models can be selected to be deployed on the target device. We conducted experiments with two different gait recognition models on NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano and Jetson AGX Orin to explore their decision spaces. In addition, we investigated different strategies to increase the throughput of the deployed models by taking advantage of batching and concurrent execution. Together, these techniques allowed us to design real-time solutions for gait recognition in scenarios with multiple subjects. These solutions can process between 42 and 188 simultaneous subjects at 25 inferences per second with an energy consumption ranging from 6.31 to 9.71 mJ per inference, depending on the device and the deployed model.European Union Next Generatio

The Wheat Intrinsically Disordered Protein TdRL1 Negatively Regulates the Type One Protein Phosphatase TdPP1.

Type 1 protein phosphatases (PP1s) are crucial in various plant cellular processes. Their function is controlled by regulators known as PP1-interacting proteins (PIPs), often intrinsically disordered, such as Inhibitor 2 (I2), conserved across kingdoms. The durum wheat TdRL1 acts as a positive regulator of plant stress tolerance, presumably by inhibiting PP1 activity. In this work, co-immunoprecipitation and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assays demonstrate that the durum wheat TdPP1 interacts with both TdRL1 and At-I2 in vivo. YFP fluorescence restored after TdRL1-TdPP1 interaction decorated specifically the microtubular network of the tobacco co-infiltrated cells. In vitro phosphatase assays revealed that TdRL1 inhibited the activity of wild-type TdPP1 and two mutant forms (T243M and H135A) in a concentration-dependent manner, showing a novel and potent inhibition mechanism. Structural modeling of the TdPP1-inhibitor complexes suggested that both At-I2 and TdRL1 bind to TdPP1 by wrapping their flexible C-terminal tails around it, blocking access to the active site. Remarkably, the model showed that TdRL1 differs from At-I2 in its interaction with TdPP1 by trapping the phosphatase with its N-terminal tail. These findings provide important insights into the regulatory mechanisms governing the activity of PP1s in plants and highlight the potential for targeted inhibition to modulate plant stress responses.European project INPLANTOMICS, project number: 10107890

    Get PDF

PID2023-149342NB-I00Whereas Ulrich Beck suggested that modern societies have become «risk societies», it has been recently proposed that we now live in the «Anthropocene», namely a historical epoch in which humanity turns into a global environmental agent. In both accounts, tehnology plays a key role. However, political theory —including environmental political theory— has overlooked the crucial subject of technological change. How does it happen? Can we control or direct it? Whereas radical environmentalism typically responds with a rejection of technology on normative grounds, aiming at reducing the number of technologies on which societies rely and mostly defending some version of degrowth, ecomodernism decidedly bets on the design and development of new technologies — those that are capable of delivering both mitigation and adaptation of climate change while not impinging on neither economic growth or nature's preservation. Nevertheless, the political dimension of technology remains unexplained. Can we have democratic monitoring and technological change? That is the subject of this paper, which will proceed by offering an overview of the subject before discussing the trilemma of technological change: efficiency, democracy, and social consensus cannot be secured at the same time

    No full text

Chronic pain in adolescents is an increasing public health concern with a significant physical, psychological, and social impact. This study aims to develop, implement, and evaluate DigiDOL-Ad, a digital psychosocial treatment for adolescents with chronic pain, supplemented by dedicated websites for their parents and teachers. This multicenter study will be conducted in four phases: (1) Development of the intervention framework and foundational planning; (2) Focus groups with adolescents with chronic pain, their parents, teachers, healthcare professionals and health authorities to identify specific needs and tailor the psychosocial treatment and related components; (3) Iterative usability testing of the digital treatment, using an a hermeneutical circle methodology to refine the design based on participant feedback; and (4) Evaluation of DigiDOL-Ad through a pre-treatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up assessment. DigiDOL-Ad has the potential to improve the quality of life for adolescents with chronic pain. By leveraging digital health technologies, this innovative approach could establish a new benchmark for treating adolescents with chronic pain, emphasizing interdisciplinary and stakeholder-driven care.Spanish Ministry of Science and InnovationGovernment of CataloniaEuropean Regional Development FundFundación GrünenthalANUBISCosmetic groupESTEV

    No full text
