Literary translators’ associations and the construction of translation as literature in Spain

    Get PDF
In this article I approach literary translators’ associations in the context of late twentieth century Spain through the theoretical lens of Bourdieu’s sociology of literature. I argue that one important function of the activism that these organizations promoted was the social construction of literary translation as a form of literature in its own right. In this article I present multiple instances of how translators made use of the communicative spaces that their associations created (round tables, publications, conferences, interviews, etc.) to publicly represent translation as a kind of creation which can be largely autonomous from economic as well as scholarly considerations, and which presents three traits that are specific to literature. These traits are self-referentiality, ability to create its own object, and a structure defined by a heteronomous and an autonomous pole. This sociological approach to a largely understudied dimension of translators’ collective action invites us to revise the notion that literary translators’ associations function as professional bodies that, for the most part, fail to protect the interests of their members

Leveraging SYCL for Heterogeneous cDTW Computation on CPU, GPU, and FPGA

    Get PDF
One of the most time-consuming kernels of a recent epileptic seizure detection application is the computation of the constrained Dynamic Time Warping (cDTW) Distance Matrix. In this paper, we explore the design space of heterogeneous CPU, GPU, and FPGA implementations of this kernel using SYCL as a programming model. First, we optimize the CPU implementation leveraging the SIMD capability of SYCL and compare it with the latest C++26 SIMD library. Next, we tune the SYCL code to run on an on-chip GPU, iGPU, as well as on a discrete NVIDIA GPU, dGPU. We also develop a SYCL implementation on an Intel FPGA. On top of that, we exploit simultaneous co-processing on CPU+GPU and CPU+FPGA platforms by extending a previous heterogeneous scheduling framework to now support 2D partitioning strategies. Our evaluations demonstrate that SYCL seems well suited to exploit the SIMD capabilities of modern CPU cores and shows promising results for accelerating devices, both in terms of performance and energy efficiency. Moreover, we find that our scheduler enables the efficient co-execution of work among the computing devices, and the results demonstrate that dynamic and adaptive partitioning strategies perform efficiently with overheads below 4%.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

Reaction Mechanism and Kinetic Model of the Transformation of Iron Monosulfides Thin Films into Pyrite Films.

This work presents a comprehensive reaction and kinetic model of the pyrite thin films formation by sulfuration of Fe monosulfides when a molecular sulfur (S2) atmosphere is used. This investigation completes the results already published on the explanation and interpretation of the sulfuration process that transforms metallic iron into pyrite. It was previously shown that the monosulfide species (i.e., orthorhombic and hexagonal pyrrhotite phases) are intermediate phases in the sulfuration reaction. Based on experimental data we now show that the sulfuration of pyrrhotite to pyrite takes place in two distinct stages: (i) conversion of orthorhombic pyrrhotite to pyrite (Fe1–xSO → FeS2) while the hexagonal pyrrhotite (Fe1–xSH) phase remains unaltered, and (ii) final transformation of hexagonal pyrrhotite to pyrite (Fe1–xSH → FeS2). Both processes occur via interstitial sulfur diffusion through the previously formed pyrrhotite layer. Consequently, the monosulfide is sulfurated at the internal Fe1–xS/FeS2 interface. The reaction mechanism at each stage has been validated using the corresponding kinetic model to fit the experimental data on time evolution of Fe1–xS and FeS2 layers thicknesses and some of the film transport properties. The concluding global reaction mechanism proposed in some of our former papers and completed here (Fe → Fe1–xS → FeS2) can explain the resulting microstructure of the pyrite films (i.e., Kirkendall effect and formation of a porous layer in the film). Simultaneously, it also justifies the presence of intrinsic defects, such as iron and sulfur vacancies, and the accumulation of interstitial sulfur at the film grain boundaries. The conductivity of pyrite films is tentatively explained using a two-band model where the changes in the Seebeck coefficient and the S/Fe ratio during the pyrite recrystallization stage can be successfully explained.Members of MIRE Group acknowledge the financial support of the Spanish MICINN under projects RTI2018-099794-B-I00 and PID2021-126098OB-I00/AEI/FEDER10.13039/501100011033. Wrist Joint Restriction: Impact on Foot Pressure, Center of Gravity, and the Role of the Dominant Hand.

    Get PDF
Background: Wrist immobilization is a common clinical intervention for wrist injuries; however, its repercussions on gait parameters and plantar support have not been extensively investigated. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to determine whether wrist immobilization causes alterations in foot pressure and center of gravity, considering hand dominance and visual conditions (eyes open or closed). Methods: The research experiment was conducted using the PodoPrint S4 platform. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated to summarize the variables. Additionally, in the mixed linear model (t-tests use Satterthwaite’s method) an analysis of variance for repeated measures (ANOVA-RM) was conducted for the determination of the objectives of the study. Results: This study included a total of 44 participants (29 females and 15 males), with an average age of 36.5 years (SD = 17.5). Immobilization, independent of eye condition, resulted in significant alterations in antero-posterior oscillation and in a larger plantar support area. In addition, the results suggest that the eye state significantly influences plantar support, independent of limb immobilization or dominance. Conclusions: Our findings reveal significant alterations in antero-posterior oscillation and plantar support due to immobilization, suggesting a dynamic interplay between wrist function and lower limb biomechanics

The Shifting Profiles of Privilege: Exemption, Status, and Social categorization in Seville in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries.

Historians for the past several years have begun rejecting the old paradigm that portrayed early modern society as motionless. Breaking with the legitimizing discourse of forbidding and immobile estates, they have revealed a highly dynamic society with roots in the late medieval period.2 But medieval historians, particularly in Spain, traditionally have not paid much attention to social mobility, though some important historians recently have pointed in that direction.3 Regarding the question of alleged stasis in the Crown of Castile, several studies have examined the royal court, municipal oligarchies, and tax structure

Systematic Review on the efficacy of Gestalt Therapy

    Get PDF

https://www.iztzg.hr/en/journal-tourism/aims-and-scope/Serbia has favourable conditions for developing oenology and viticulture and, thus, wine tourism destinations. A study was conducted based on open data analysis and evaluation to determine the possibility of producing wine destinations in Serbia. The study uses environmental data (slope, altitude, climate, etc.) to build the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), land use data - CORINE Land Cover 2018 (European Environment Agency, n.d.) and hydrography. Open sources through social media were used to obtain socio-economic data, such as natural areas, hiking and cycling routes, etc. All data were geolocated and processed in natural-geographical and socio-economic groups with the ArcGIS 10.8 software package. This research is a new contribution using geodata for the tourist valorisation of the vineyard area. By apply- ing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), results show the advantages of specific wine regions over others for developing wine tourism. These are the following wine-growing regions: Subotica, Fruška Gora (northern Serbia), Šumadija and Niš (central and southern Serbia) and wine-growing regions close to BelgradeThe paper is a part of research financed by the MSTDI RS, agreed in decision no. 451-03-136/2025-03/200009 from 4.2.2025. ¿Importan las Estrategias de Regulación Cognitivo-Emocional para Explicar los Diferentes Roles del Ciberacoso?

    Get PDF
