Effect of feeding frequency on the growth performance of black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) "Nanhai NO. 2" in cement ponds culture
This study examined the growth response of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, reared in indoor cement ponds fed at variable daily feeding frequencies. Five hundred healthy shrimp (1.26±0.37 g initial weight) were stocked in 12 cement ponds (5.5×2.5×1.5m). Three ponds in each group were assigned to four different feeding frequency i.e., two, three, four and six times/day designated as FF1, FF2, FF3 and FF4, respectively. Artificial diet (40% fishmeal protein) was used to feed at eight percent of total shrimp body weight per day for a total period of 56 days. The shrimp length and weight were measured fortnightly and the feeding rate was adjusted according to the new weight. At the end of the trial, all shrimp remained healthy and active with the survival rate of 70-85%. The specific growth rate (SGR) were the highest in groups FF3 (4.21±0.53) and FF4 (4.23±1.04), which were significantly higher than those in FF1 (3.82±0.49) and FF2 (4.02±1.03) groups. Whole body proximate composition (protein, ash, moisture and lipid) remained similar in all the treatment groups. It could be concluded that the black tiger shrimp, P. monodon, would be grown in indoor cement ponds effectively by feeding four times day-1 to achieve significantly better growth
First report of Iridovirus (ISKNV) infection in Israeli mariculture gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) at the Mediterranean Sea
Megalocytiviruses have caused mass mortalities in various farmed fish species, both edible and ornamental. Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) belongs to this family of viruses and induces lethal diseases in cultured fish. Here, we publish the first report describing this epizootic virus affecting the sea bream (Sparus aurata) in the offshore mariculture farm located in the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. Dietary lipid levels requirements of hybrid yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco × P. vachelli
A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the dietary lipid levels requirements of hybrid yellow catfish using pelleted diets containing six different lipid levels formulated to contain graded levels of 0.0% (control), 3.4%, 6.8%, 10.2%, 13.6%, and 17% of dry matter. A total of 504 juveniles with an average initial body weight of 8.77±0.012 g were randomly divided into 6 groups containing 3 triplicates with 28 fish per tank and fed each of the experimental diets. Results showed that maximal final body weight, weight gained and specific growth rate were significantly higher in the groups fed 3.4%, 6.8%, and 10.2% compared with that of groups fed 13.6% and 17.0% (P 0.05) while the viscerosomatic index significantly decreased in 6.8% and 10.2% groups. White blood cells, red blood cells, hematocrit and platelets levels significantly increased in the decreased dietary lipids levels (P 0.05). Serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transaminase, total protein, total cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose were significantly influenced by the dietary lipid levels. Liver superoxide dismutase and catalase concentration decreased significantly in the 6.8% and 10.2% groups. Malondialdehyde increased in 6.8% and 10.2% groups. Glutathione peroxide showed insignificant results (P > 0.05). Study results suggested that, dietary lipid levels containing 3.4%,6.8% and 10.2% significantly influenced growth, blood function, antioxidant status and strengthened immune response in hybrid yellow catfish while higher dietary lipid levels (13.6% and 17.0%) decreased body weight and weakened immunity
Grape seed proanthocyanidins alleviate the negative effects of dietary cadmium on pearl gentian grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus female x Epinephelus lanceolatus male)
The present study was conducted to evaluate whether grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) could alleviate the negative effects of dietary cadmium on growth performance, body composition, activities of digestive enzymes, and antioxidant potential in the intestine of pearl gentian grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus female x Epinephelus lanceolatus male). Two hundred and forty pearl gentian groupers with the initial average body weight of 31.30±0.05 g/fish were randomly divided into four treatment groups with three replicates in each group and 20 fish in each replicate. The four treatment groups were identified as control group (the basal diet), Cd group (the basal diet+300 mg/kg Cd), Cd+GSPs group I (the basal diet+300 mg/kg Cd+400 mg/kg GSPs), and Cd+GSPs group II (the basal diet+300 mg/kg Cd+800 mg/kg GSPs group), respectively. The trial lasted for 42 days. Fish exposed to 300 mg/kg dietary cadmium had lower growth performance, mineral metabolism disorders with lower calcium and phosphorus levels, higher ash level, decreased lipase and protease activities, and antioxidant potential in the intestine. Dietary GSPs supplementation could counteract those negative effects to a certain extent. The alleviation effects of Cd+GSPs group II were better than those of Cd+GSPs group I. Except for calcium and phosphorus levels in whole fish composition, 800 mg/kg dietary GSPs supplementation could not recover the adverse effects caused by Cd stress. These results suggested that GSPs might potentially mediate dietary cadmium toxicity and alleviate the negative effects on pearl gentian grouper
E Ola Ka ʻIke Hawaiʻi: Hawaiian Knowledge Shall Live
Presentation slidesIn 2020, the World Indigenous Nations University-Hawaiʻi Pasifika (WINUHP) launched the E Ola Ka ʻIke Hawaiʻi (Long Live Hawaiian Knowledge) project. The purpose of the project is to increase access to and engagement with culturally-relevant Native Hawaiian digital resources via information literacy skills development for Native Hawaiians, educators and librarians. E Ola Ka ʻIke Hawaiʻi project leaders have developed an entirely online, dynamic curriculum to offer a certificate program, which was piloted in 2021. In this session, project leaders discuss the implementation of E Ola Ka ʻIke Hawaiʻi in terms of its significant impact on augmenting Leo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Voice) and the advancement of Hana Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Work) all while working online during the pandemic
Exploring and Planning for Controlled Digital Lending (CDLL)
Presentation slidesThis session will introduce the basics of Controlled Digital Lending for Libraries. It will present the potential as well as the planning aspects needed to implement a CDLL program for your library. The presenters will explain CDLL as it relates to Fair Use and how CDLL gives libraries the ability to expand access to their collections to support ILL, distance education, and patrons who are unable to come into the library in-person. Additionally, CDLL can provide access to special collections, library-use only, and unique materials that traditionally are non-circulating. The presenters will share their library's exploration and planning experiences to date implementing a CDLL service, provide examples of other current operational CDLL models and technical applications along with information resources to consult about CDLL and Fair Use
Difference analysis of gut microbiota of golden pompano <em>Trachinotus ovatus</em> (Linnaeus, 1758) with the unsynchronized growth by feeding fermented soybean meal
Abstract Golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) is a commercially important marine fish and is widely cultured in the coastal area of South China. We explored the distribution difference of intestinal microflora with the same growth condition and the difference of gut microflora with different growth rates fed with fermented soybean meal (FSM) and fish meal (FM) primary protein source. After 8 weeks of the breeding experiment, select significant growth fish (Zcd, 156.04 ± 1.04 g) average growth fish (Zc, 120.01 ± 1.05 g) stagnant growth fish (Zcx, 98.03 ± 1.08 g) in FSM and select average growth fish (Dc, 158.03 ± 1.02 g) in FM. Sequencing results show that a total of 86303 sequences had been obtained in the intestine of Trachinotus ovatus. The number of OTUs that can be annotated to the database was 2315 (98.97%). At the phylum level, Proteobacteria, Tenericutes, Spirochaetes and Firmicutes were the predominant phyla. Alpha diversity and beta diversity analyses show that gut microbes' richness and diversity in the Dc group were the highest. The diversity of gut microbiota in the FSM: Zc > Zcd >Zcx. At the genus classification level, the differences between FM and FSM were mainly in Gueglia, Grimontia, Klebsiella, Alistipes, Staphylococcus, and Parasutterella (p <0.05). Alistipes and Staphylococcus were the different genera between Dc and Zcd (p <0.05). We found significant differences in the relative abundance of Ruegeria between the Zc and Zcd groups. Also, significant differences were found in the distribution of Brevinema, Ruegeria, Unidentified-Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, and Bacteroides between Zc and Zcx groups. The results showed that fermented soybean meal had an essential effect on gut microflora of T. ovatus with the unsynchronized growth
